  • To understand the effect of surface roughness on silicon wafer bonding, a continuum mechanical model is presented. This model is based on Obreimoff's experiment and the contact theory of rough surfaces. The surface energy of silicon was calculated to be much reduced than the theoretical value. Problems are discussed concerning surface film effects and the assumption of constant asperity radius and statistical distribution function.

  • The present study has been undertaken to investigate the effect of the extract of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense leaves (CLE) on blood circulation in a rat model of topical ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$)-induced carotid artery damage. $FeCl_3$ treatment seriously damaged the carotid artery such as the walls of the artery, blood flow and inflammation. However, CLE administration has ameliorated blood circulation and suppressed vessel inflammation. CLE administration also has ameliorated the $FeCl_3$-induced artery tissue damage. Furthermore, CLE significantly suppressed the expression of adhesion molecules. These results suggest that CLE ameliorate blood circulation through suppress inflammatory mediator and adhesion molecule production.

  • In this study, the friction test was performed to find friction characteristics of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets and the multiple regression method was employed to obtain friction models. The friction coefficients associated with the lubricant viscosity, drawing speed, and blank holding pressure are measured. Differently from GA steel sheets, the effects of the lubricant viscosity and pulling speed are a little, which are explained by a theory of adhesion and wear as well as a deformation of friction surface. In addition, the effects of friction parameters are numerically represented by friction regression models.

  • Condensation control of nano-particles has become important in order to fabricate minute condensed structures. In this study, we focus our attention on condensation mechanism of polymer aggregates in a resist film. The polymer aggregate is structural component of a resist material which is used in lithography process. The condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface is observed by using atomic force microscope (AFM). By using the AFM, the condensation of polymer aggregates can be observed clearly. The condensation of polymer aggregate strongly affects to precise fabrication of resist pattern below 100nm size. The interaction force among polymer aggregates can be analyzed based on Derjaguin approximation. We also discuss about condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface with the help of micro sphere model.

  • The post ion implantation has been applied to modify early-grown BN layer and improve the adhesion of the BN films. The effect of ion implantation doses on microstructure and interlayer was investigated by FTIR and HRTEM. And the hardness and delamination life time of N+-implanted BN films were measured. With increasing the ion dose up to $5.0\times10^{15}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$,the change of IR spectrum is observed. At $5.0\times10^{16}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$, a drastic transition of cubic phase into hexagonal phase is detected. The change of microstructure of early-grown layers by ion implantation is confirmed using HRTEM. Both microhardness and delamination life time of BN films increase with ion dose. The modification model of early-grown BN layers is briefly discussed based on the displacement per atom and excess boron in the BN film induced by ion irradiation.

  • Two models of scratch testers developed recently are applied to the adhesion measurement of thin coatings. In both models the critical load is determined from the frictional irregularity when coated surface is broken in the scratching process. One model is effective for coatings thicker than 1m and the other for thin coatings down to $0.1\mu\textrm{m}$. The mechanism and the measurement principle of these testers are described. High sensitivity and good reproducibility of the measurement are attained primarily by the employment of new detection devices. These testers are even more useful for the quality control and the inspection of commercial products of coatings because only a small area of specimen is required for the test.

  • To determine an operational condition of an adhesion-type oil skimmer, it is important to estimate the withdrawal rate for a given driving velocity of the skimmer and material properties of the oil. As a theoretical model for this problem the formation of an oil film on a vertically driven flat plate is investigated. The previous steady-state analysis made in the field of coating industry are reviewed. These studies have been made under the assumptions of small Reynolds and capillary number, which is adequate for coating process but not for oil skimming. An alternative analysis based on the linear stability theory is made. Comparisons with the experimental results reveal that the stability analysis gives a correct estimation of the withdrawal rate for high capillary number at which the previous theory losses its validity.

  • The objective of the current study is to characterize the long-term stability and efficacy of a structural adhesive assembly under static load. An apparatus was designed to be used in the Instron tensile test machine that would allow for real time modeling of the failure characteristics of an assembly utilizing a moisture- cure adhesive which was bonded to concrete. A regression model was developed that followed a linear - natural log function which was used to predict the expected life of the assembly. Evaluations at different curing times confirmed the structure was more robust with longer cure durations prior to loading. Finally, the results show that under the conditions the assembly was tested, there was only a small amount of inelastic creep and the regression models demonstrated the potential for a stable structure lasting several decades.

  • Black magnetite film could be formed on Invar steel for shadows mask by iron electroplating in thickness of 0.46~0.63$\mu\textrm{m}$ on Invar steel and subsequent oxidation of iron by immersion in strongly alkaline soution for 30~60 minutes. blackness degreed of magnetite oxide film on Invar was C20BL90 in comparision of color chart of Dainippon Ink & Chemicals Inc. Co. and adhesion test showed excellent adhesion of oxide film on substrate. Magnetite oxide film grew up on iron in hot strongly alkaline solution according to 'Sato-Cohen' oxide film growth model.
