  • Considering a dual-hop energy-harvesting (EH) relaying system, this paper advocates novel relaying protocols based on adaptive time power switching-based relaying (AR) architecture for amplify-and-forward (AF) mode. We introduce novel system model relaying network with impacts of co-channel interference (CCI) and derive analytical expressions for the average harvested energy, outage probability, and the optimal throughput of the information transmission link, taking into account the effect of CCI from neighbor cellular users. In particular, we consider such neighbor users procedure CCI both on the relay and destination nodes. Theoretical results show that, in comparison with the conventional solutions, the proposed model can achieve optimal throughput efficiency for sufficiently small threshold SNR with condition of reasonable controlling time switching fractions and power splitting fractions in concerned AR protocol. We also explore impacts of transmission distances in each hop, transmission rate, the other key parameters of AR to throughput performance for different channel models. Simulation results are presented to corroborate the proposed methodology.

  • In the interweave cognitive networks, the interference from the primary user degrades the performance of the cognitive user transmissions. In this paper, we propose an adaptive cooperation scheme in the interweave cognitive networks to improve the performance of the cognitive user transmissions. In the proposed scheme for the bidirectional communication of two end-source cognitive users, the bidirectional communication is completed through the non-relay direct transmission, the one-way relaying cooperation transmission, and the two-way relaying cooperation transmission depending on the limited feedback from the end-sources. For the performance analysis of the proposed scheme, we derive the outage probability and the finite-SNR diversity multiplexing tradeoff (f-DMT) in a closed form, considering the imperfect spectrum sensing, the interference from the primary user, and the power allocation between the relay and the end-sources. The results show that compared with the direct transmissions (DT), the pure one-way relaying transmissions (POWRT), and the pure two-way relaying transmissions (PTWRT), the proposed scheme has better outage performance. In terms of the f-DMT, the proposed scheme outperforms the full cooperation transmissions of the POWRT and PTWRT.

  • This paper proposes the adaptive relaying of protective devices applied in the neighboring distribution feeders for reliable and efficient operations of a wind farm interconnected with distribution networks by dedicated lines. A wind farm connected to an electric power network is one of the greatest alternative energy sources. However, the wind turbine generators are influenced by abnormal grid conditions such as disturbances occurring in the neighboring distribution feeders as well as the dedicated power. Particularly, in cases of a fault happening in the neighboring distribution feeders, a wind farm might be accelerated until protective devices clear the fault. Therefore, the delayed operation time of protective devices for satisfying the coordination might overly expose the interconnected wind turbine generators to the fault and cause damage to them. This paper describes the proper delayed operation time of protective relay satisfying the coordination of the distribution networks as well as reducing damage on the interconnected wind farm. The simulation results for the Hoenggye substation model composed of five feeders and one dedicated line using PSCAD/EMTDC showed that the proper delayed time of protective devices reflecting the fault condition and the power output of the wind farm could improve the operational reliability, efficiency, and stability of the wind farm.

  • This paper presents an energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient 2-1-1 relaying scheme in which a sensor node(SN) assists two others in their data transmission to a clusterhead in WSNs(Wireless Sensor Networks) using LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). We derive the closed-form BER expression of this scheme which is also a general BER one for the decode-and-forward cooperative protocol and prove that the proposed scheme performs the same as the conventional relaying scheme but obtains higher channel utilization efficiency. A variety of numerical results reveal the relaying can save the network energy up to 11 dB over single-hop transmission at BER of $10^{-3}$.

  • This paper presents the adaptive setting method of distance relay under the single line ground fault. The apparent impedance measured at the relaying point and actual impedance is different because of fault resistance and various prefault loading condition. For a resistance earth fault detection, relay setting zone is adaptively changed with measured load current and bus voltage at the relaying point to avoid maloperation.

  • We propose a link adaptation and selection method for the links constituting an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless relay network. The proposed link adaptation and selection method selects the forwarding, modulation, and channel coding schemes providing the highest end-to-end throughput and decides whether to use the relay or not. The link adaptation and selection is done for each sub-channel based on instantaneous signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) conditions in the source-to-destination, source-to-relay and relay-to-destination links. The considered forwarding schemes are amplify and forward (AF) and simple adaptive decode and forward (DF). Efficient adaptive modulation and coding decision rules are provided for various relaying schemes. The proposed end-to-end link adaptation and selection method ensures that the end-to-end throughput is always larger than or equal to that of transmissions without relay and non-adaptive relayed transmissions. Our evaluations show that over the region where relaying improves the end-to-end throughput, the DF scheme provides significant throughput gain over the AF scheme provided that the error propagation is avoided via error detection techniques. We provide a frame structure to enable the proposed link adaptation and selection method for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-time division duplex relay networks based on the IEEE 802.16e standard.

  • Since the power swing depends on the operating time of the relay, the swing's magnitude can be reduced by an autoreclosure relaying system with an optimal reclosing algorithm. This paper proposes a method for stability improvement using optimal reclosure relaying. An optimal reclosure algorithm is applied to identify both temporary and permanent faults, and to predict system stability by applying WAM and high speed communication technology. It provides optimal control by predicting and determining the degree of stability, considering the real time transient stability using EEEAC. For temporary faults, the algorithm determines the system's stability and either recloses optimally for stable systems, or inserts series capacitance before optimal reclosure for unstable systems. It also applies an optimal reclosure algorithm to minimize shock and damage to the power system when reclosure fails due to permanent faults.

  • The zone 3 elements of distance relays play an important role during the propagation of cascaded events. The most challenging problem to mitigate catastrophic failures is to distinguish between actual faults with line flow transfer from other disconnected lines. This paper presents an adaptive protective relaying scheme based on Line Outage Distribution Factor(LODF) and Generation Shift Factor(GSF) to prevent zone 3 tripping during the cascaded events. Internet based secure peer to peer communication is recommended as a communication method of proposed scheme. Several communication issues such as reliability, speed and cyber security are discussed. In order to establish the feasibility of the proposed scheme, computer simulations for a six bus system has been performed.

  • This paper presents an apparent impedance calculation procedure for distance relaying of transmission line involving FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) devices, particularly the UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller), between Kangjin and Jangheung in Korea. With the changes of UPFC's parameters, the measurement and protective range (trip boundaries) of the adaptive distance relay can also be changed. So, it is the most important part in the field of system protection to analyze the operating characteristic of relaying system. The presence of UPFC significantly affects the trip boundaries which are also adversely affected by fault resistance combined with remote end infeed. This paper presents the apparent impedance calculations and the distance relay setting characteristics for faults involving the UPFC in the KEPCO system.
