  • Information theory progression along with the advancements being made in the field of Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) supports the use of coding-aware opportunistic routing for efficient data forwarding. In this work, we propose and investigate an adaptive coding-aware routing scheme in a specific VANET scenario known as a vehicular platoon. Availability of coding opportunities may vary with time and therefore, the accurate identification of available coding opportunities at a specific time is a quite challenging task in the highly dynamic scenario of VANETs. In the proposed approach, while estimating the topology of the network at any time instance, a forwarding vehicle contemplates the composition of multiple unicast data flows to encode the correct data packets that can be decoded successfully at destinations. The results obtained by using OMNeT++ simulator reveal that higher throughput can be achieved with minimum possible packet transmissions through the proposed adaptive coding-aware routing approach. In addition, the proposed adaptive scheme outperforms static transmissions of the encoded packets in terms of coding gain, transmission percentage, and encoded packet transmission. To the best of our knowledge, the use of coding-aware opportunistic routing has not been exploited extensively in available literature with reference to its implications in VANETs.

  • Adaptive Modulation & Coding (AMC) is the method of varying the modulation and coding scheme for the changeable wireless channel environment. WiBro use AMC method because it has a very large variation caused by mobility interference and other cell interference. In this paper, we will compare and analysis the method of selecting the optimum MCS level for the efficiently use of mobile power consumption.

  • In this paper, an efficient predictor for entropy coding is proposed. It adaptively selects one of two prediction errors obtained by MED(median edge detector) or GAP(gradient adaptive prediction). The reduced error is encoded by existing entropy coding method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can compress higher than existing predictive methods.

  • In this paper, an adaptive motion vector smoothing scheme based on weighted vector median filtering is proposed in order to eliminate the motion outliers more effectively for improving the quality of side information in frame-based distributed video coding. We use a simple motion vector outlier reliability measure for each block in a motion compensated interpolated frame and apply weighted vector median filtering only to the blocks with unreliable motion vectors. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive motion vector smoothing algorithm improves the quality of the side information significantly while maintaining low complexity at the encoder in frame-based distributed video coding.

  • For digital image compression, various fractal image coding schemes using the self-similarity of image have been studied extensively. This paper discusses the problem that occurs during the calculating process of adaptive orthogonal transformation and provides improvements of LIFS coding scheme using the transformation. This proposed scheme has a better performance than JPEG for a wide range of compression ratio. This research also proposes an image composition method consisting of all domains of the transformation. The results show that the arithmetic operation processes of the encoder and the decoder become much smaller even without the distortion of the coding performance.

  • We develop a simple adaptive population coding model for neural networks based upon an error minimization method. Our model exhibits properties that have been experimentally observed in the population coding of the motor-cortical cells during the voluntary arm movements of primates. By removing a group of directionally tuned cells after learning, we study its contribution to the population coding. Through the learning process of the remained cells, we observe how the cells modify their preferred directions to reduce the coding errors. Since this adaptive property has been neither predicted nor experimentally observed before, it would be interesting to find whether a similar adaptive property exists in real cortices that are believed to encode the information in their cell populations.

  • This paper proposes the algorithm for forward link adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) and the detailed design for a satellite communication system to improve network reliability and system throughput. In the ACM scheme, the coding and modulation schemes are changed by as much as the channel can provide depending on the quality of the communication link. To implement the forward link ACM system in the Ka-band, channel prediction and modulation/coding decision methods are proposed and simulated. The parameters of the adaptive filter predictor based on the least mean square are optimized, the minimum mean square error of the channel predictor is 0.0608 when step size and the number of filter tap are 0.0001 and 4, respectively. A test-bed is set up to verify the forward link ACM system, and a test is performed using a Ka-band satellite (i.e., Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite [COMS]). This test verifies that the ACM scheme can increase the system throughput.

  • This paper proposes the wavelet image coding using the significant cluster extraction by morphology and the adaptive quantization. In the conventional MRWD method, the additional seed data takes large potion of the total data bits. The proposed method extracts the significant cluster using morphology to improve the coding efficiency. In addition, the adaptive quantization is proposed to reduce the number of redundant comparative operations which are indispensably occurred in the MRWD quantization. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm has the improved coding efficiency and computational cost while preserving superior PSNR

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive trellis-coded Multiple Quadrature Amplitude Modulation(ATCMQAM) applying MQAM as the modulation scheme in the conventional ATCMPSK (Adaptive trellis-Coded Multiple Phase Shift Keying) for slowly varying Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed system adaptively controls the coding rate combined with modulation level of pragmatic approach to trellis-coded modulation according to the instantaneous fading channel conditions, and employs MQAM as modulation scheme. Results by computer simulation show that the proposed adaptive model using MQAM can realize higher quality transmission with the improvement more than 0.5 ~ 1bit in average bit rate. And there is a coding gain of 2-5dB, depending on the high SNR value, compared with the conventional adaptive model employing MPSK.

  • This paper proposes a novel algorithm for hybrid lossless audio coding, which employs integer discrete cosine transform. The proposed algorithm divides the input signal into frames of a proper length, decorrelates the framed data using the integer DCT and finally entropy-codes the frame data. In particular, the adaptive Golomb-Rice coding method used for the entropy coding selects an optimal option which gives the best compression efficiency. Since the proposed algorithm uses integer operations, it significantly improves the computation speed in comparison with an algorithm using real or floating-point operations. When the coding algorithm is implemented in hardware, the system complexity as well as the power consumption is remarkably reduced. Finally, because each frame is independently coded and is byte-aligned with respect to the frame header, it is convenient to move, search, and edit the coded data.
