This paper presents a method for the inverse dynamic anlaysis of mechanical systems. Actuating forces(or torques) depending on the driving constraints are analyzed in the relative coordinate space using the velocity transformation technique. A systematic method to compose the inverse velocity transformation matrix, which is used to determine the joint reaction forces, is proposed. Two examples are taken to verify the method developed here.

Piezo devices have large power density and simple structure compared with conventional electrical motors. Thus they can generate larger forces than the conventional actuators with small size. Their resopnses to commands are also very fast and thus the bandwidths are very wide. Thus the piezo devices are expected to be used widely in the future for actuating devices requiring fast response and large actuating force with small size. However, the piezo actuators need high voltage with high driving current due to their large capacitive property. In this paper, proposed is a simple method to drive piezo devices using voltage inversion circuit with coli inductance. The coil inductance carries the charges in the piezo device to the opposite side, inverting the polarity of the applied voltage, thus saving the power to drive the device with AC voltages. Experiments with real circuit demonstrates that the proposed scheme can improve the energy efficiency very much.

An automatic transmission, which consists of several decks of planetary gear sets, provides multiple speed and torque ratios by actuating brakes and clutches (mechanical friction components) for connecting central members of the planetary gear sets. The gear set consists of the sun gear, the ring gear, and the carrier supporting multiple planet gears with pin shafts. In designing a new automatic transmission, there are many steps to design and analyze: gears, brakes and clutches, shafts, and other mechanical components. Among them, selecting thrust bearings that not only allow the relative rotation of the central members and other mechanical components but also support axial forces coming from them is important; doing so yields superior driving performance and better fuel efficiency. In selecting thrust bearings, the magnitude of axial forces on them is a critical factor that affects their bearing size and performance; its results are systematically related to the direction of the helical angle of each planetary gear set (a geometric design profile). This research presents the effects of the helical angle direction on the axial forces acting on thrust bearings in an automatic transmission consisting of planetary gear sets. A model transmission was built by analyzing kinematics and power flows and by designing planetary gear sets. The results of the axial forces on thrust bearings were analyzed for all combinations of helix angle directions of the planetary gear sets.

A study on the development of control loading system for a pilot command in the helicopter flight training device is performed. The key issue of the device is how to provide closely the real feeling of the stick forces to the trainer during the flight training. Focusing on this proviso and considering the suitable approach than the complexity of the hydraulic system, we adopt the AC servo motor system although its inherent disadvantages such as the torque ripple and the stick-slip friction effect at a low control force. However, we overcome these detrimental effects by introducing the appropriate control device and the robust structural design of the actuating system, thereby the feasibility and applicability to the system can be obtained by showing good performance, meeting the required specification.

Electro-Active paper (EAPap) is a new smart material that has a potential to be used in biomimetic actuator and sensor. It is made by cellulose that is abundant material in nature. EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, large displacement, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. Actuating mechanism of EAPap is known to be the combined effects of ion migration and piezoelectricity. However, the electromechanical actuation mechanisms are not yet to be established. This paper presents the modeling of the actuation behavior of water infused cellulose samples and their composite dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell-Wagner theory. Electro-mechanical forces were calculated using Maxwell stress tensor method. Bending deflection was evaluated from simple beam model and compared with experimental observation, which result good correlation with each other.

The relationship between strain and applied potential was derived for composite actuators consisting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conductive polymers (CPs). During deriving the relationship, an electrochemical ionic approach is utilized to formulate the electromechanical actuation of the composite film actuator. The results show that the well-aligned SWNTs composite actuator can give good actuation responses and high actuating forces available. The actuation is found to be affected by both SWNTs and CPs components and the actuation of SWNTs component has two kinds of influences on that of the CPs component: reinforcement at the positive voltage and abatement at the negative voltage. CNT/EAP was fabricated successfully using the chemical polymerization method.

This paper investigates optimal locations of piezoelectric actuators and sensors on a thin plate. To locate actuators and sensors properly is important in controlling modal vibrations well. A piezoelectric sensitivity index is introduced to select optimal locations for vibration control of each mode. The sensitivity expresses the efficiency of actuating and sensing modal forces according to locations of a piezoelectric material on a plate. The piezoelectric sensitivities for two types of plate, an all-clamped plate, and a free-free plate, are derived theoretically and are verified experimentally. Also, its usefulness Is experimentally shown to control vibration of the all-clamped plate with piezoelectric materials.

An inverse dynamic procedure for spatial multibody systems containing flexible bodies is developed in the relative joint coordinate space. Constraint acceleration equations are derived in terms of relative coordinates using the velocity transformation technique. An inverse velocity transformation operator, which transforms the Cartesian velocities to the relative velocities, is derived systematically corresponding to the types of kinematic joints connecting the bodies and the system reference matrix. Using the resulting matrix, the joint reaction forces and moments are analyzed in the Cartesian coordinate space. The formulation is illustrated by means of two numerical examples.

This paper presents the design and the control of three degree-of-freedom(DOF) fine positioning device based on an electro-magnetic force. The device is designed by use of a magnetic circuit theory and it is capable of fine motion due to the electro-magnetic force. The device consists of permanent magnets, yokes and coils. The magnetic fluxes generated from the permanent magnets constitute magnetic paths through steel, whereas the coils are arranged into the gap between two surfaces of the yokes. Therefore, by supplying current to the coils, the coils are capable of some motions due to Lorentz forces. For the optimal design of the actuating system, the system parameters are defined and investigated under the given constraints. From the system modeling in small displacement, three decoupled equations of motion are obtained. To get better performance of the system, a PID controller is implemented. Experimental results are presented in terms of time response and accuracy.
