This study explores the types of daily routines in child care centers based on the time planned for indoor free choice activities, outdoor activities, group activities and nap/rest. The daily routine plans of 63 classes of 0 to 2-year-olds and 51 classes of 3 to 5-year-olds were cluster analyzed. Also, openness and closeness of child care programs as well as the most participated indoor/outdoor activities were examined using questionnaires developed for teachers. The results were as follows: First, teachers planned the most time for free play choice activity and comparatively less time for outdoor play during the day. Time for rest and naps were planned more for 0-2 year-olds whereas group activities were planned more for the 3-5 year-olds. Second, 3 daily routine types were found in the daily plans of child care centers, such as "Low-Activity Oriented," "Free Choice Activity Oriented" and "Group Activity Oriented" in 0 to 2-year-old classes and 3 to 5-year-old classes. Also, "Group Activity Oriented" type in 0 to 2-year-old classes showed more "closed" child care programs than the "Free Choice Activity Oriented" type. However, no difference was shown among the 3 types of daily routines in the openness and closeness of 3 to 5-year-old child care programs. Finally, all children, regardless of the types of daily routine, participated most in block activity and role play indoors and fixed-play equipment, sand play and free play outdoors.
The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of Teacher Participation-oriented Education Program (TPEP) for Elementary School Teachers to Improve Class Expertise in Science Classes with a focus on visual attention. The participants were two elementary school teachers in Seoul and taught science subjects. The lesson topic applied to this study were 'Structure and Function of Our Body' in the second semester of fifth grade and 'Volcano and Earthquake' in the second semester of fourth grade. The mobile eye tracker SMI's ETG 2w, which is a binocular tracking system was used in this study. In this study, the actual practice time, participant's visual attention, visual intake time average, and visual intake time average were analyzed by class phase. The results of the study are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the actual class execution time, the actual class execution time was almost in line with the lesson plan after the TPEP application. Second, visual attention in the areas related to teaching and learning activities was high after applying TPEP. Factors affecting the progress of the class and cognitive burdens were identified quantitatively and objectively through visual attention. Third, as a result of analyzing the visual intake time average of participants, there was a statistically significant difference in all classes. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the visual intake time average of participants, the results were statistically significant in the introduction(video), activity 1, activity 2, and activity 3 stages in the lecture type class. The Teacher Participation-oriented Education Program (TPEP) for Elementary School Teachers to Improve Class Expertise in Science Classes can extend elementary science class expertise such as self-class analysis, eye tracking, linguistic, gesture, and class design beyond traditional class analysis and consulting.
The present paper explores rationales for the process-oriented approach to teaching writing and their implications for EFL writing classes. The product-oriented traditional approach to writing has put too much emphasis on linguistic aspects of writing. It fails to see the enormous complexity of the act of composing. In the process-oriented paradigm, writing is regarded as a messy process leading to clarity and the writer discovers meaning instead of merely' finding an appropriate structure in which to package ideas already developed from the beginning. Based on the underlying assumptions, some suggestions are made for EFL writing classes. Firstly, practitioners should be aware that writing is a recursive activity in which the writer moves backward and forwards between drafting and revising, with stages of re-planning in between. Secondly, writing teachers should help the student writers build an awareness of themselves as a writer and encourage their sense of confidence in writing. Lastly, students should be encouraged to pay their attention to content revision at first, and delay editing changes until the last draft.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between the daily routines and physical environments of daycare centers. Methods: A total of 20 classes at 8 different daycare centers from the metropolitan city of Daejeon were investigated. Trained observers visited each daycare center more than 3 times and collected data about daily routines using the Observational Log for Daily Routines in Daycare Centers. Also, the physical environments of each class were investigated in terms of actual size, layout of activity center, etc. Results and Conclusion: Results of the study were: first, daily routines of daycare centers could be divided into 2 distinguishable types by cluster analysis- 'free play oriented' and 'group activity oriented' Second, the amount of space each child has in a classroom differed according to the total size of the classroom. An average of 7 activity centers existed in each classroom. Third, there was a difference between free play oriented and group activity oriented groups in terms of the classroom size allocated for each child and the organization of the activity centers.
This study evaluated the types of daily routines that occurred in child care centers based on four general categorizations: time spent on indoor free choice activities, outdoor activities, group activities and special activities. In addition, resulting child care teacher behaviors were examined based on daily routine types. A total 23 classes' activity times and teacher behaviors were observed. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, hierarchical cluster, and Mann-Whitney U. Results indicated that there were 2 principle daily routine, 'indoor/outdoor activity time oriented' and 'group activity time oriented'. Analysis showed that teachers who belonged to the 'indoor/outdoor activity time oriented' type showed more positive affect, positive guidance, neural guidance, and less non-involved behavior. Results suggest the importance of time spent on free choice activities in the context of daily routine for quality childcare.
This study analyzed the effect of Human-oriented Alternative Science Activities(HASA) on a coaching teacher and the students who participated in this activity. Human-oriented alternative science activities were used in the experimental group and traditional teaching methods were used in the control group. In pretest and posttest sessions, both groups were evaluated using an academic achievement test, and an affective characteristics related science test. After the activity, questionaries regarding attitudes to science lessons were administered as well. The process of change (if any) which occurred in the science lessons of the experimental group teacher was also analyzed through the teacher's diaries. The results showed that application of HASA had a positive effect upon affective characteristics and attitudes to science classes held by the experimental group and teacher. However, the result of this study also showed that the variation between academic achievement of each group was statistically insignificant.
The purpose of this study was to analyze two subject competencies (practical problem-solving capability and independent life capability) reflected in the activity tasks included in the 'home life and safety' area of 12 middle school technology-home economics textbooks in accordance with the 2015 revised curriculum. The analysis criteria were sub-elements of two subject competencies. Seven sub-elements were derived from each competency. Frequency analysis was performed to determine how often the sub-elements were reflected in the activity tasks. The results were as follows. First, with regard to the sub-elements of 'practical problem-solving capability', 'value judgment' was reflected most frequently in the activity tasks followed by 'exemplification of solution', 'logical thinking', 'critical thinking', 'decision-making', 'practical reasoning', and 'evaluation of solutions'. Secondly, the sub-elements of 'independent life capability' were unevenly distributed in the activity tasks. The 'capability to perform conscious living' was reflected most frequently followed by 'development and self-identity', 'time, money, and leisure management', and 'reasonable consumption and resource utilization'. For teachers wanting to teach activity-oriented classes and student participatory classes, the results pinpoint the materials necessary to develop learners' subject competencies by using textbooks from different publishing companies.
According to the characteristics of elementary school students in favor of playing games, and to their high energy levels and physical growth states, it is fair to say that students can learn mathematics through 'game playing activities.' These activities are considered to intrigue their interest in class and make them feel less stress from the burden of studying mathematics. Mr. Skemp, who had conducted research on 'game activity' with experimental studies relating to elementary mathematics, recommends that math teachers try to give as many activity-oriented classes as possible to students. The method of 'game activity' by Skemp's operation deals with the whole range of mathematical themes. It is believed by other math teachers that this is not a way to substitute free time or just to have fun in class, but an intentionally well-organized way of learning an entire mathematical course during elementary school. In this research, 5th and 6th grade students needing extra classes after school had been exposed to 'ame activity' by Skemp's operation. As a result, we can figure out its influence on their understanding of arithmetic ability, and on the cognitive definition territory in their minds.
Learning for educating creative thinking and problem solving abilities and for future-oriented method should have appropriate laboratory, experimental equipments and appliances. Technology laboratory model pertinent to experiment or activity for educating creative persons is suggested in the following : (1) It is considered that many problems of current education result from an overcrowded classes. The number of students per laboratory should be $30{\sim}40$ persons. (2) There should be sufficient activity spaces for students. Unlike normal classrooms laboratory should have various tools and materials, information, facility and equipment. (3) Flexible activity spaces for various activities should be provided for groups and individuals. (4) Safety facilities should be provided sufficiently. (5) Learning experiences of collection, analysis and utilization of information should be given. (6) Laboratories should be designed to be a place for self-propelled learning. They should be designed to be able to learn by individuals and small groups after taking into consideration the individual differences as students differ in interest, curiosity and ability.
