  • Recent studies demonstrate that machine learning has expanded in the field of seismic interpretation. Many convolutional neural networks have been developed for seismic sequence identification, which is important for seismic interpretation. However, expense and time limitations indicate that there is insufficient data available to provide a sufficient dataset to train supervised machine learning programs to identify seismic sequences. In this study, patch division and data augmentation are applied to mitigate this lack of data. Furthermore, to obtain spatial information that could be lost during patch division, an artificial channel is added to the original data to indicate depth. Seismic sequence identification is performed using a U-Net network and the Netherlands F3 block dataset from the dGB Open Seismic Repository, which offers datasets for machine learning, and the predicted results are evaluated. The results show that patch-based U-Net seismic sequence identification is improved by data augmentation and the addition of an artificial channel.

  • This study is a theoretical exploration of project-based service-learning and its application in designing pre-dental curricula. As a response to the limitation of community service courses, service-learning has been implemented as pedagogy in higher education practices. Service-learning connects service and learning by engaging students in activities that address community needs with intentionally designed learning opportunities while adding value to and transforming both service and learning. Project-based service-learning is an extended and more active version of service-learning. Whereas service activities are arranged by instructors in the original service-learning, project-based service-learning provides students with opportunities for exploring problems and root causes on site and then devising and implementing solutions of their own using their talents and creativity. This study proposes a theoretical approach to project-based service-learning and suggests six design components, namely, related curriculum, reflection, reciprocity, service and community engagement, evaluation and recognition, and creative problem solving. Based on the components, 20 design strategies are formulated. The exploration is aimed to provide design guides for professionals attempting to implement project-based service-learning in higher education.

  • In order to derive a better classifier with a limited number of training examples, active teaming alternately repeats the querying stage fur category labeling and the subsequent learning stage fur rebuilding the calssifier with the newly expanded training set. To relieve the user from the burden of labeling, especially in an on-line environment, it is important to minimize the number of querying steps as well as the total number of query examples. We can derive a good classifier in a small number of querying steps by using only a small number of examples if we can select multiple of diverse, representative, and ambiguous examples to present to the user at each querying step. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based batch query selection method which can select diverse, representative, and highly ambiguous examples for efficient active learning. Experiments with various text data sets have shown that our method can derive a better classifier than other methods which only take into account the ambiguity as the criterion to select multiple query examples.

  • The existing CAI or web-based science learning system of elementary school has some disadvantages. For instance, it is composed of uniform courses designed by an instructor without considering the learner's characters, and the learner's opinions or questions raised during learning can not be delivered to the system. This structure has diminished the willingness or the motive of the learner and make an adverse effect on the learning efficiency. In this regards, Instruction-Learning System is needed to provide learning environment Pertinent to the learner's individual character and motivate the learner's active attendance and learning. This study is to design a character-based conversational Instruction-Learning System. This may induce the learner's active attendance through the communications between instructor and learner and furnish various learning materials to motivate the learners and attract their consistent interests in learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest some direction to support learning of students in college of engineering. It results from the assumption that engineering education accreditation should come with assessment of the educational process. To analyze the learning process, this study analyzed 5 categories - involvement in and out of instruction, faculty-student interaction, teaching-learning outcomes, and the system of student support. The Research method was questionnaire, and T-test and hierarchical linear model were used. The major findings are as follows. Major-level of satisfaction in teaching-learning and optional-level of satisfaction in teaching-learning are good. But the degree of self-directed learning activities and student-faculty interaction is low, and writing attitude and learning outcomes are not good. Student-faculty interaction, high-order thinking activities and active involvement have a good influence on learning outcomes. So this study suggests to enhance active involvement in instruction, high-order thinking activities, writing skills, and interaction with faculty for the improvement of quality of higher education.

  • This descriptive study identifies nursing students' methods of studying related to the learning stages, based on a sample of 251 nursing students in a Korean university. The main findings of the study are as follows. The major learning styles of nursing students were accomodation (68.6%), divergen (53.6%), and convergence (38.8%) for the first, second, third, and fourth year group. For all students, the majority (71.3%) showed accomodation or the divergence. The learning styles for grade level were significantly different, (x2=110.021, df=9, p=0.001). The stage of concrete experience was the majority for all of the first year group (51.8%), the second year group (57.1%), and the third year group (61.3%). But, active experimentation (41.9%) was the majority for the fourth year group. Also there were significant differences between the stages of learning by age (x22= 64.391, df=9, p=0.001). The most significant result of the study was the establishment of different modes of learning stages by year, thus supporting the experiential learning theory. The greatest change of style from the first year group to the second year group was reflective observation (7.3%longrightarrow12.9%). That from the second year group to the third year group was the abstractive conceptualization (14.3%longrightarrow21.3%); and that from the third year group to the fourth year group was active experimentation (12.0%longrightarrow41.9%). This reflects the same cycle as indicated by the experimental learning theory of Kolb. According to the study, nursing students' learning stages tended to be more unbalanced as year increases. Therefore this calls for a careful review of the current nursing curriculum.
