  • As drone technology advances, the risks of drones are increasing, then technology to detect drones is becoming important. In this thesis, it was verified that miniaturized and lightweighted active array antenna could be used for radar system to detect drones in reality. The transmit-receive module was designed in the form of tile-type to simplify interconnections between devices. The waveform generation module and the down conversion module were miniaturized to include in one body too. As a result of verifing the detection performance through test, it was confirmed that the detection range was over 3.7Km.

  • The monopulse tracking algorithm can estimate the location of a partner station based on an RF (Radio Frequency) signal. The location of the partner station is estimated based on the monopulse ratio curve (MR-C), which is calculated based on the sum and difference signal patterns of an antenna. Therefore, the range in which the estimated location can be calculated with high accuracy increases in proportion to the linear region of MR-C. In this paper, we proposed a method to extend the linear region of the MR-C curve using the beamforming technique for the tracking antenna system using the active phased array antenna. Simulation results based on the same antenna system, it was confirmed that the linear region of MR-C was enlarged by about twice as much as the general case where the proposed method was not applied.

  • The design and implementation of planar Active Phased Array Antenna System are described in this paper. This Antenna system operates at X-band with its bandwidth 10 % and dual polarization is realized using dual slot feeding microstrip patch antenna and SPDT(Single Pole Double Through) switch. Array Structure is 16×16 triangular lattice structure and each array is composed of TR(Transmit & Receive) module with more than 40 dBm power. Each TR module includes digital attenuator and phase shifter so that antenna beam can be electronically steered over a scan angle(±60). Measurement of antenna pattern is conducted using a near field chamber and the results coincide with the expected beam pattern. From these results, it can be convinced that this antenna can be used with control of beam steering and beam shaping.

  • In this paper, a Ka-band high-output active phased array antenna device applicable to small radars and seekers was designed, and the improved performance was studied. The radiation device assembly consists of 1x8 arrangements, and the step flared notch antenna type. It shows low active reflection loss characteristics in broadband, and low loss characteristics by applying the air-strip feeding structure, and is designed to enable beam steering up to 45 degrees. The TRM(transmit receive module) output power is more than 2.0W per channel using GaN HPA in the transmitting path, and satisfies more than 25.0 dB gain and less than 6.0 dB noise figure in the receiving path. Accordingly, the Effective Isotropically Radiated Power(EIRP) of the antenna unit shows the performance of 0.00 dB or more and the receive gain-to-noise temperature ratio(G/T) of 0.00 dB/k or more. For demonstration, we have designed aforementioned planar array antenna which consists of 64 radiating elements having a size within 130 mm x 130 mm x 300 mm and weight of less than 4.9 kg..

  • Modern Radars are evolving into MFRs which can search multiple targets simultaneously and then track them. Additionally they should be able to avoid some external jamming signals. Applying to these MFRs, Antennas should be able to perform DBF including to not only real-time beam steering but also multi-beam forming simultaneously. And they can cancel the beam at the specific direction. In this paper, we describe the implementation of sub-array type antenna hardware which can be applying DBF. Also we propose the modified amplitude aperture distribution for suppressing the side lobe level and explain the sub-array receiver design with amplitude tapering. It consists in making the amplitude weighting in 2 steps. In order to compare two weighting cases, we investigate the G/T performance for the array antenna. At the conclusion, we make a comparative study for the dynamic range of every sub-array receiver and present the hardware implementation that is more advantageous for sub-array alignment and calibration in DBF.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of the beam forming module that is a key unit of the active phased array antenna(APAA) system for mobile satellite communications. This module includes two blocks for main signal and tracking signal. Main signal block has the role of transmitting input signal from phased away antenna to tracking signal block. And, tracking signal block executes main roles, beam forming of tracking signal and electronic beam control. The several electrical performances of this module, phase characteristics and linear gain, etc., agreed with specifications needed for APAA, and for more clear verification of the performances, the satellite communication test of the APAA including the modules was accomplished in the outdoors.

  • This paper describes the development and measurement results of C-band planar active phase array antenna for detecting and tracking radar(weapon-locating radar). The antenna is designed with 14 sub-arrays(12 main channels and 2 sidelobe blanking channels and approximately 3,000 elements of transmit-receive channel) to generate transmit and digital receive patterns. Using a near-field measurements facility, G/N, transmit patterns, and received patterns are measured. Receive patterns are implemented with digital beamforming by signal processing. The measurement results demonstrate that antenna design specifications were fulfilled.

  • In this paper, the Single-stage Transmission type Injectiong-Locked Oscillator(STILO) was designed and fabicated for the Active Integrated Phased Array Antenna(AIPAA) system. The STILO, which was designed and fabricated by injection-locked technique and hair-pin resonator, has the same 210MHz frequency tuning range of the Voltage Controlled Oscillator(VCO) used by varactor. The locking bandwidth of STILO with 11.5MHz bandwidth, is much better than that of the Injection-Locked Dielectric Resonator Oscillator(ILDRO), And the STILO has the improved noise characteristics in AM, FM, and PM. This STILO is useful for the AIPAA, the coupled VCO array, an the MMIC structure.

  • Interference and jamming are becoming increasing concern to a radar system nowdays. AESA(Active Electronically Steered Array) antennas and adaptive beamforming(ABF), in which antenna beam patterns can be modified to reject the interference, offer a potential solution to overcome the problems encountered. In this paper, we've developed a planar active phased array radar system, in which ABF, target detection and tracking algorithm operate in real-time. For the high output power and the low noise figure of the antenna, we've designed the S-band TRMs based on GaN HEMT. For real-time processing, we've used wavelenth division multiplexing technique on fiber optic communication which enables rapid data communication between the antenna and the signal processor. Also, we've implemented the HW and SW architecture of Real-time Signal Processor(RSP) for adaptive beamforming that uses SMI(Sample Matrix Inversion) technique based on MVDR(Minimum Variance Distortionless Response). The performance of this radar system has been verified by near-field and far-field tests.

  • In this paper, we have developed a retrodirective active array operating in the 2 GHz LS band. The retrodirective array has the property of re-directing any electromagnetic wave back to the incoming direction without any priory informations. The system is consisted of frequency mixers and antenna array. The mixer is acting as a phase conjugator. In this research, 2-port gate mixers using pHEMT and 1×4 monopole array have been used. The retrodirective array developed in this research can be applied in the base station facilities for the wireless mobile communications and RFID transponders.
