This study was conducted to confirm the effect of bypass dust on the hydration and mechanical properties of the cement pastes and mortar obtained from ordinary Portland cement (OPC), OPC-slag and OPC-fly ash system. The rate of heat evolution is accelerated with the content of By-pass Dust(BD). total heat evolution increased because alkali-chlorides activated the hydration of blended cement. Compressive strength and bound water content show maximum value at 5wt% By-pass Dust(BD) on each curing time in ordinary Portland cement and slag blended cement. Ca(OH)2 content of Ordinary Portland Cement increased as the content of BD and curing time. In blended cement, the formation of Ca(OH)2 is active at early hydration stage. By pozzolanic reaction, the content of Ca(OH)2 is decreased as curing time goes by. According to the BD content stable chlorides complex of Friedel's salt (C3A·CaCl2·10H2O) is created. Due to the hydration activation effect of chlorides and alkali we observed Type II C-S-H, which developed into densest microstructure.

This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical properties on non-sintered cement pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures. The non-sintered cement pastes were synthesized using blended binder(Class F fly ash; FA and ground granulated blast furnace slag; GGBFS) and alkali activator(sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate). Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and GGBFS in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. The alkali activators were used 5wt% of blended binder, respectively. Calcium carbonate was used as an chemical additive. The compressive strength, bulk density and absorption of alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes were measured at 3 and 28 days after immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures($5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$). The XRD and SEM tests of the pastes were conducted at 28 days. Water-soluble chloride(free chloride) and acid-soluble chloride(total chloride) contents in the pastes were also measured after 28 days immersion in sea water. The experimental results showed that increasing the content of FA in alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea water increases the absorption, water-soluble chloride content and acid-soluble chloride content, and reduces the compressive strength and bulk density. And it was found that there was a variation of strength change for the alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures that depends on the blending ratio of FA and GGBFS.

Alkali-activated slag concretes are being extensively researched because of its potential sustainability-related benefits. For such concretes to be implemented in large scale concrete applications such as infrastructural and building elements, it is essential to understand its early and long-term performance characteristics vis-a'-vis conventional ordinary portland cement (OPC) based concretes. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the property and performance features including early-age isothermal calorimetric response, compressive strength development with time, microstructural features such as the pore volume and representative pore size, and accelerated chloride transport resistance of OPC and alkali-activated binder systems. Slag mixtures activated using sodium silicate solution ($SiO_2$-to-$Na_2O$ ratio or $M_s$ of 1-2) to provide a total alkalinity of 0.05 ($Na_2O$-to-binder ratio) are compared with OPC mixtures with and without partial cement replacement with Class F fly ash (20 % by mass) or silica fume (6 % by mass). Major similarities are noted between these binder systems for: (1) calorimetric response with respect to the presence of features even though the locations and peaks vary based on $M_s$, (2) compressive strength and its development, (3) total porosity and pore size, and (4) rapid chloride permeability and non-steady state migration coefficients. Moreover, electrical impedance based circuit models are used to bring out the microstructural features (resistance of the connected pores, and capacitances of the solid phase and pore-solid interface) that are similar in conventional OPC and alkali-activated slag concretes. This study thus demonstrates that performance-equivalent alkali-activated slag systems that are more sustainable from energy and environmental standpoints can be proportioned.

Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. Instead, the source of material such as fly ash and blast slag, that are rich in Silicon(Si) and Aluminium(Al), are activated by alkaline liquids to produce the binder. Hence concrete with no cement is effect reduction of CO$_2$ gas. In this study, we investigated the influence of the workability and compressive strength of mortar on water reducing agent, alkaline activator and curing method in oder to develop cementless blast slag based alkali-activated mortar. In view of the results, we found out that the flowability of mortar was lowered as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, but not large the loss of flowability to 9M NaOH, most of water reducing agent was not effect. The compressive strength was improved as increasing to mole concentration of NaOH, was the most effect in 9M NaOH. The curing temperature and curing conditions on compressive strength of blast slag based alkali-activated mortar didn't influence.
Generally, UFF A(Ultra Fine Fly Ash) has merit that advances a greater concrete workability and activates a greater pozzolanic reaction than common fly ash due to its ultra fine particle size. These properties enhance concrete durability by reducing permeability and increasing resistance of alkali silica reaction(ASR) and sulfate attack, etc. Due to these reasons, UFFA can be used in a rapid setting concrete. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the rapid setting concrete with UFF A as a repair material for early-opening-to-traffic. In previous studies, if only UFFA is added to the rapid setting concrete mixture, pozzolanic reaction doesn't happen actively. Therefore, in this study, the chemical and physical tests were performed for rapid setting concrete with UFFA including calcium hydroxide and the activity of pozzolanic reaction was evaluated. Finally, the effectiveness of this mixture on enhancing concrete durability was investigated. As results, adding UFF A decreased the water/cement ratio of concrete, and compensated the reduced portion of the early strength of concrete. Also, rapid setting concrete with UFFA including calcium hydroxide activated a greater pozzolanic reaction than normal-UFF A concrete. As calcium hydroxide increases, electrical indication of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration is promoted significantly.
Pozzolan is to improve the strength and the durability of concrete as a result of the pozzolanic reaction, Broadly speaking, pozzolanic materials can be artificial materials, such as slica fume and fly ash, and natural material, such as rice husk ash, clay, volcanic ash, clayish pozzolan. Hwangtoh is a mineral which belongs to a group of matakaolin, especially halloysite, and the main elements is SiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$, Fe$_2$O$_3$. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of Hwangtoh for the concrete admixtures, the composition of this study is shown as follows. Chapter I is analysis for properties of concrete as the kinds of admixture, and Chapter H is analysis for properties of concrete as the replacement ratio of activated Hwangtoh. As a result of this study, Hwangtoh is found to have high practical use as pozzolanic material, and the pertinent range of replacement ratios of Hwangtoh on cement are 10∼20 %.

Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of $CO_2$ gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. In this study, we investigated the influence of alkali activator and superplasticizer on the flowability and compressive strength of the alkali-activated mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete using blast furnace slag. In view of the results, we found out that the type and mixture ratio of alkali activator, the type and adding order of superplasticizer results to be significant factors. When cementless alkali-activated mortar using blast furnace slag manufactured with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, and added superplasticizer before alkali activator in the mixer, we can be secured workability with 180 mm of flow during 1 hours and compressive strength of about 50 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing condition at age of 28days.
This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical and microstructural properties on hardened samples that were synthesized using blended binder(fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag cement(BFSC)), alkali activator and sea water or distilled water. Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and BFSC in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate were used 5 wt% of binder, respectively, as an alkaline activator. The compressive strength and absorption were measured at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days, and the XRD, TGA and MIP tests were performed at the age of 28 days. An increase in the content of BFSC leads to an increase in the quantities of ettringite and C-S-H formed, regardless of the type of mixing water. And it also shows higher strength due to the reduction of pores larger than ~50 nm. All hardened samples in this study have common hydration products of C-S-H, $Ca(OH)_2$ and calcite. Hydrocalumite of all reaction products formed was only present in hardened sample mixed with sea water. For each FA/BFSC mixing ratio, the compressive strength of hardened sample mixed with sea water was similar to that mixed with distilled water. It is proposed that the slight increase of strength of samples mixed with sea water is mainly due to the presence of hydrocalumite phase containing chlorine ion, contributing to the change of total porosity and pore size distribution in samples.

Aluminosilicate materials as precursors are heterogenous in nature, consisting of inert and partially reactive portion, and have varying proportions depending upon source materials. It is essential to assess the reactivity of precursor prior to synthesize geopolymers. Moreover, reactivity may act as decisive factor for setting molar concentration of NaOH, curing temperature and setting proportion of different precursors. In this experimental work, the reactivities of two precursors, low calcium (fly ash (FA)) and high calcium (ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)), were assessed through the dissolution of aluminosilicate at (i) three molar concentrations (8, 12, and 16 M) of NaOH solution, (ii) 6 to 24 h dissolution time, and (iii) 20-100℃. Based on paratermeters influencing the reactivity, different proportions of ternary binders (two precursors and ordinary cement) were activated by the combined NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions with two alkaline activators to precursor ratios, to synthesize the geopolymer. Reactivity results revealed that GGBS was 20-30% more reactive than FA at 20℃, at all three molar concentrations, but its reactivity decreased by 32-46% with increasing temperature due to the high calcium content. Setting time of geopolymer paste was reduced by adding GGBS due to its fast reactivity. Both GGBS and cement promoted the formation of all types of gels (i.e., C-S-H, C-A-S-H, and N-A-S-H). As a result, it was found that a specified mixing proportion could be used to improve the compressive strength over 30 MPa at both the ambient and hot curing conditions.
