The objective of this study was to optimize the slurry contents and salt concentrations for ethanol production from hydrolysates of the seaweed Eucheuma spinosum. A monosaccharide concentration of 44.2 g/l as 49.6% conversion of total carbohydrate of 89.1 g/l was obtained from 120 g dw/l seaweed slurry. Monosaccharides from E. spinosum slurry were obtained by thermal acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Addition of activated carbon at 2.5% (w/v) and the adsorption time of 2 min were used in subsequent adsorption treatments to prevent the inhibitory effect of HMF. The adsorption surface area of the activated carbon powder was 1,400-1,600 m2/g and showed selectivity to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) from monosaccharides. Candida tropicalis KCTC 7212 was cultured in yeast extract, peptone, glucose, and high-salt medium, and exposed to 80, 90, 100, and 110 practical salinity unit (psu) salt concentrations in the lysates. The 100 psu salt concentration showed maximum cell growth and ethanol production. The ethanol fermentations with activated carbon treatment and use of C. tropicalis acclimated to a high salt concentration of 100 psu produced 17.9 g/l of ethanol with a yield (YEtOH) of 0.40 from E. spinosum seaweed.

Carbon is an attractive material on electro double capacitor which depend on charge storage in the electrode/electrolyte interfacial double layer. Carbonaceous material for double layer capacitor can be obtained from carbon powder, fiber, film and porous carbon sheet. The capacitance of electrodes using an activated carbon was influenced by a filling density of the carbon, thickness and internal resistance of the electrode. In this study. to reduce internal resistance and increase electric conductivity of the electrode. activated carbon/carbon(AC/C) composite electrode was fabricated. The capacitors which have energy densities of 68F/g(at $30^{\circ}C$), 109F/g(at $60^{\circ}C$) and $68F/cm^3$(at $30^{\circ}C$), $111F/cm^3$(at $60^{\circ}C$) were fabricated by using AC/C composite electrodes.
A carbon doped $TiO_2$ (C-$TiO_2$) photocatalyst, which shows good photocatalytic activity to Ultraviolet irradiation and visible irradiation, was successfully prepared by co-grinding of $TiO_2$ with ethanol or Activated Carbon(C), followed by heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ in air for 60 min. Ethanol and C were used as a representative agent of liquid and solid for carbon doping. Their influence on improving photocatalytic ability and carbon doping degree was studied with degradation of methyl orange and XPS analysis. The product prepared by co-grinding of $TiO_2$ with Ethanol had Ti-C and C-O chemical bonds and showed higher photocatalytic activity than the product prepared by co-grinding of $TiO_2$ with C, where just C-O chemical bond existed. As a result, mechanochemical route is useful to prepare a carbon doped $TiO_2$ photocatalyst activating to visible irradiation, where the solid-liquid operation is more effective than solid-solid operation to obtain a carbon doped $TiO_2$.
Feasibility of utilizing unburned carbon residue in coal ash as a potential precursor for the production of activated carbon was assessed to seek for solution to recycle unburned carbon residue. The unburned carbon concentrate generated from the 4 stages of cleaner flotation has a grade of 87% carbon. The crystalline impurities in the concentrate included quartz and mullite. Unburned carbon had a low specific surface area of $10m^2/g$, which might be related to a high degree of coalification of domestic anthracite coal. Carbon particles were mostly porous and have a turbostratic structure. When 1g of carbon was activated with 6g of KOH powder, the highest specific surface area value of $670m^2/g$ was achieved. Low wettability of unburned carbon particles, which was resulted from high temperature combustion in a boiler, might cause poor pore formation when they were activated by KOH solution. The activated carbon produced in this study developed micropores, with an equivalent quality of general-purpose activated carbon made from coal. Hence, it is concluded that chemically treated unburned carbon can be used for water purification or an alternative to carbon black as it is.

As the damage to fine dust increased, the Republic of Korea designated fine dust as a social disaster. The composition of the fine dust is composed of carbon, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and minerals. The cause of fine dust is naturally generated by dirt, pollen, etc. In addition, there are artificial causes such as gaseous vehicle exhaust gas emitted from the use of fossil fuel. When fine dust enters the human body through breathing, it causes various respiratory diseases and skin diseases. In IARC, fine dust was designated as a carcinogen group 1. In this research, we tried to adsorb fine dust by physical adsorption using powdered activate carbon. Powdered activate carbon is a powdered activated carbon activated in a carbonized state. Porous material with high specific surface area and low density. Experimental items were tested for density, water absorption, and fine dust concentration according to the PAC addition ratio. Basic experiments were carried out to fabricate the fine dust adsorption matrix.
A ceramic powder of destructive adsorbent was synthesized by impregnating copper and manganese on the surface of silica aerosil@. In-site FTIR measurements on pulses of malodorant tert-butylmercaptan injected over the powder showed that rert-butylmercaptan dimerized into di-tert-hutyldisulfide on the surface of the adsorbent in an ambient condition. GC/MS measurement on the gas over the adsorbent showed no tert-butylmercaptan remaining, and showed only the dimerization product of di-tert-butyldisulfide. Most of the dimerization product, di-tert-butyldisulfide,remained on the surface of the adsorbent as physisorbed condense, and apparently Iowered the destruction efficiency by blocking the surface from the access by tert-butylmercaptan. Upon being heated above $100^{\circ}C$ it was observed that the physisorbed di-tert-butyldisulfide dissociated back into tert-butylmercaptan. tert-butylmercaptan physisorbed on the activated carbon, thereby no dimerization was occurring on the surface of the activated carbon. In an argn environment, the dimerization reaction was practically not occurring even on the surface of the adsorbent, indicating the free oxygen in air was also participating in the dimerization reaction. Water was identified as a by-product of the dimerization reaction. Possible reactions on the surface of the adsorbent were proposed.

Zeolite 4A-impregnated complex molecular sieve was prepared by hydrothermal reaction after aluminosilicate gel was penetrated into the pore of activated carbon granule. The crystals of zeolite 4A mainly were formed in the macropore of activated carbon, and their average diameter is $0.8{\mu}m$. The pore volume of activated carbon granule is $0.67m{\ell}/g$, and the pore volume of the sample including 21.6wt% of zeolite 4A crystal is $0.41m{\ell}/g$ decreasing the pore volume by 40% due to the crystallization of zeolite 4A crystals on the internal surface of activated carbon. The calcium ion exchange capacity of zeolite 4A-impregnated sample is 320mg $CaCO_3/g$ zeolite, and this value is almost the same as that of zeolite 4A powder. The crystal of zeolite 4A was not separated from the support of activated carbon granule in the course of ultrasonic dispersion. The adsorption isotherm of water on zeolite 4A-impregnated sample shows the intermediate shape between types, I and III. In addition, zeolite 4A-impregnated sample shows the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties simultaneously.
Carbon electrodes for capacitive deionization were fabricated through mixing two different carbon powders (activated carbon powder, carbon black) with different particle sizes to investigate physical or electrochemical properties and finally desalination performances of the electrodes with various compositions of two carbon powders in weight and were compared with the electrode consisting of activated carbon. As a result, the electrode structure became more packed as increasing the amount of carbon black and resulted in 10% increase in mesopore fraction. The specific capacitance obtained from cyclic voltammograms of various electrodes showed that the electrode containing carbon black only had 107.4 F/g, while the specific capacitance of the electrode having more amount of carbon black increased and was higher than the one having no carbon black. The results of desalination runs in a capacitive deionization cell exhibited that the electrode having the highest amount of carbon black (1 wt%) in this study had the highest desalting efficiency, and no significant pH variation was observed during the runs. It was analyzed using accumulated charge that the fraction of non-Faraday current increased as the amount of carbon black increased in the electrodes. It can be concluded that the addition of carbon black changed the electrode structure resulting in an increase in the fraction of mesopore and finally enhanced the desalting efficiency by decreasing Faraday current.

Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by activation of coal tar pitch (CTP) in the range of $700^{\circ}C-1000^{\circ}C$ for 1-4 h using potassium hydroxide (KOH) powder as the activation agent. The optimal activation conditions were determined to be a CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained ACs showed increased pore size distribution in the range of 1 to 2 nm and the highest specific capacitance of 122 F/g in a two-electrode system with an organic electrolyte, as measured by a charge-discharge method in the voltage range of 0-2.7 V. In order to improve the performance of the electric double-layer capacitor electrode, various mixtures of CTP and petroleum pitch (PP) were activated at the optimal activation conditions previously determined for CTP. Although the specific capacitance of AC electrodes prepared from CTP only and the mixtures of CTP and PP was not significantly different at a current density of 1 A/g, the AC electrodes from CTP and PP mixtures showed outstanding specific capacitance at higher current rates. In particular, CTP-PP61 (6:1 mixture) had the highest specific capacitance of 132 F/g, and the specific capacitance remained above 90% at a high current density of 3 A/g. It was found that the high specific capacitance could be attributed to the increased micro-pore volume of ACs with pore sizes from 1 to 2 nm, and the high power density could be attributed to the increased meso-pore volume.
Recently, building materials and air purification filters with eco-friendly charcoal are actively studying to reduce the concentration of radon gas in indoor air. In this study, radon reduction performance was assessed by designing and producing new panel-type activated carbon filter that can be handled more efficiently than conventional charcoal filters, which can reduce radon gas. For the fabrication of our panel-type activated carbon filter, first the pressed molding product after mixing activated carbon powder and polyurethane. Then, through diamond cutting, the activated carbon filter of 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm thickness were fabricated. To investigate the physical characteristics of the fabricated activated carbon filter, a surface area and flexural strength measurement was performed. In addition, to evaluate the reduction performance of radon gas in indoor, the radon concentration of before and after the filter passes from a constant amount of air flow using three acrylic chambers was measured, respectively. As a result, the surface area of the fabricated activated carbon was approximately $1,008m^2/g$ showing similar value to conventional products. Also, the flexural load was found to have three times higher value than the gypsum board with 435 N. Finally, the radon reduction efficiency from indoor gas improved as the thickness of the activated carbon increases, resulting in an excellent radon removal rate of more than 90 % in the 6 mm thick filter. From the experimental results, the panel-type activated carbon is considered to be available as an eco-friendly building material to reduce radon gas in an enclosed indoor environment.
