  • A 51-year-old woman visited our hospital with massive hemoptysis. She had suffered from recurrent hemoptysis for five years and had undergone bronchial artery embolization many times. The patient had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and bronchiectasis. Chest radiography showed consolidation around the nodule in the lateral basal segment of the right lower lobe. We successfully performed a right lower lobectomy. The histological study of the resected specimen showed a vegetable foreign body and clumps of Actinomyces, indicating actinomycosis, which was suggested to be the cause of the hemoptysis. This was a very rare case of hemoptysis caused by a vegetable foreign body and actinomycosis.

  • Pulmonary actinomycosis is a chronic pulmonary infection characterized by suppuration, abscess formation, and dense scarring. The causative agent, Actinomyces israelii, is a gram-positive, microaerophilic bacterium that resemble fungi. We recently treated two cases of pulmonary actinomycosis. A patient was underwent right lower lobectomy under the impression of bronchiectasis. Pulmonary actinomycosis was diagnosed of postoperatively. He was medicated with high-dose penicillin parenterally. The other patient was also undergone right lower lobectomy under the impression of broncholithiasis and received parenteral penicillin and oral roxythromycin. There was no recurrence or development of empyema. The purpose of this paper is to review of our experience and to enhance consideration of pulmonary actinomycosis.

  • Actinomycosis is an infection caused by the actinomyces genus and is associated with trauma or previous infection. A 58-year-old male patient was referred from a private dental clinic for root extraction of the lower right molar. The x-ray showed fractured root-like material distal to the distal root of the lower right second molar. A biopsy during extraction of the root-like material was performed, which revealed a sequestrum with actinomycosis by a pathological examination. In this case, the radiopacity of the suspicious lesion was higher than that of the surrounding alveolar bone, which confused it with the root tip. The diagnosis of actinomycosis required long-term antimicrobial therapy, which is very different from simple extraction or removal of sequestrum.

  • A gene coding $endo-{\beta}$,-1, 4 glucanase from Actinomyces sp. KNG40 and phytase from Hansenula polymorpha were cloned into Esherichia coli JM101 by using E. coli/Lactobacillus shuttle vector pNZ3004 and pNZ123. The plasmid p3PS(1-4) and p123(1-4) have slpA promoter and slpA signal sequence. So, I constructed expression vectors, p3PS(1-4)Endo, phy and p123(1-4)Endo, phy. These constructed vector was transformed in target host Lactobacillus gasseri and reutri. These transformed host expressed endoglucanase and phytase as extracellular fraction. In the enzyme activity of the same vector, host L, gasseri was higher activity than L. reuteri. This indicates that L. gasseri recongnize promoter and signal sequence very well.

  • This study investigated the production of antioxidant from Actinomyces culture supernatant. For the research of the natural marine antioxidant, several bacteria were isolated from the coast of Je-ju in Korea. An actinomycetes strains, S-1 was identified to a genus level 16S ribosomal DNA sequence and fatty acid analysis. From these results and other characteristics described in the Bergey's Manual, this strain was identificated as a Nocardiopsis dassonvillei. Strain S-1 showed high activity of 1,1-diphenyl-2-prcrylhydrazyl radical scavenging. The hydroxyl radical scavenging ability of Nocardiopsis sp. S-1 supernatant was 53%. Nutritional and cultural conditions for the production of antioxidant by this organism under shake-flask conditions have optimized. Similary initial medium pH 7.6, incubation temperature of $25^{\cicr}C$, sodium chloride concentration 2.5 and incubation time of 8 day were found to be optimal.

  • Actinomycosis is an infrequent chronic infection regarded as the most misdiagnosed disease by experienced clinicians. The Office of Rare Diseases at the National Institute of Health has also listed this disease as a "rare disease." This article presents a case report of actinomycosis of the alveolus with unusual clinical features but a successful resolution. It also states the importance of biopsy of deceptive inflammatory lesions that do not respond or recur after conventional treatment modalities.

  • The Actinomyces organism is inherent in human as normal flora found in the mouth. Outside of the mouth, this organism can cause actinomycosis. Involvement of the extremity is very rare and atypical. The authors have experienced a case of actinomycosis of the foot and report with the literature review. Histopathologic finding shows multiple sulfur granules. In histochemical stains, periodic acid-Schiff, Gomori methionine silver, and gram stain were positive, and acid fast bacilli stain was negative. The patient was treated with surgical excision and antibiotic administration with Ampicillin for 6 months.

  • Pelvic actinomycosis is an uncommon infectious disease. It induces a chronic, suppurative illness characterized by an infiltrative and granulomatous response and, thus, the clinical and radiologic findings may mimic other inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. A 56-year-old female with a long-standing intrauterine device was diagnosed with pelvic actinomycosis manifesting as a large uterine mass with locally infiltrative spread into surrounding tissue that mimicked uterine malignancy. Actinomyces israelii infection was confirmed with a surgical specimen, and the patient was treated with antibiotic medication. Pelvic actinomycosis must be included in the differential diagnoses of patients with an infiltrative pelvic mass extending across tissue planes or in patients with findings of multiple microabscesses, particularly in a patient with an intrauterine device, even the lesion primarily involves the uterus.
