  • In this paper, we propose target range estimation method using ghost target in the submarine linear array sonar. Usually, when submarine detect target, they use passive sonar detection to avoid self-disclosure by active sonar transmission. But, originally, passive linear array sonar have limitation for target range estimation and additional processing is required to get target range information. For the case of near-field target, typical range estimation method is using multiple information by multipath effect in underwater environment. Acoustic signal generated from target are propagated along with numerous multipath in underwater environment. Since multipath target signals received in the linear array sonar have different conic angles each other, ghost target is appeared at the bearing different with real target bearing and sonar operator can find these information on the operation console. Under several assumption, this geometric properties can be analysed mathematically and we get the target range by derivation of this geometric equations using measured conic angles of real target and ghost target.

  • Time-selective self-triggering water sampler, AUTTLE developed by Jin et al. (1999) has been improved in order to prevent pre-deposition of suspended sediments (SS) before sampling. By using two solenoids, the improved sampler is able to be moored or deployed with inclination. Its position is changed to horizontal position by activating the first solenoid, and then the endcaps of the sampling bottle are closed by the second solenoid that is driven three times to minimize possible failure of sampling. An external control unit for setting sampling time has been also constructed. Additionally, the electric circuit housing of the sampler has been modified to be detached from the sampling bottle when operating manually. Its performance has been confirmed through flume tests and a field experiment. It will serve as a valuable tool in the various fields of oceanography and environmental engineering, especially where seawater sampling synchronized at several sites and/or the information in storm period is important.

  • The authors carried out a field experiment to confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish schools in a setnet in the coast of Cheju Island. The effects of the acoustic emission on the luring of fish schools were observed using a manufectured underwater speaker in the setnet, and pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz and the source level was 126dB, was emitted on and off at 5 minutes intervals in the set net during the night of ,July 29 and ,July 31. So we had recorded behavior of fish schools by the telesounder with two channel and shape of the setnet by underwater video camera and analyzed them. When the flood and ebb currents were around the setnet, the nets rised to the surface of water and it happened occasionaly at the stand of tide. Therefore, it was in the state that fish schools feel constraint to enter into the setnet, and was required a new design of the setnet stand up to strong tidal current. As the pure sound, of which frequency was 600Hz was emitted for the luring of fish schools in a setnet, the catch ammounts of fish, the young horce mackereWI'rachllrlls japonicus), was increased 4~6 times than not emitted.

  • Many previous researches on the premixed flame in a tube have treated the unsteady flame behaviors but more detailed and fundamental research has been necessary. The study on the flame stabilization condition in a tube and the unsteady behaviors were carried out in recent years. In this paper, a mean velocity variation larger than the burning velocity was introduced to the stabilized flame for a period longer than the reaction time scale in order to examine the unsteady behavior of flame propagation. Through our previous work it was found that the effects of non-unity Lewis number on the flame extinction was negligible in the extinction by the boundary layer even though they were important in the extinction by the acoustic instability. In this paper we carried out an analytic approach to explain the previous experimental results. It showed that the heat loss, from a flame to the wall, is not a sufficient condition but a required one for the growth of the extinction boundary layer. In addition, the quenching and the flame stretch, under a strong unsteady flow field, are the main causes of the eventual extinction.

  • Purpose: The balcony in the apartment is important space not only as a fire escape but also as a buffer for heat and sound insulation. However, with the legalization of balcony expansion for residential apartments in Korea in 2006, many households have eliminated the balcony space altogether to increase the inner space, often without sufficient consideration for the effects on the indoor environment. This study examined the sound insulation performance of exterior-facing windows in enclosed balconies and the changes in the indoor acoustic environment due to expansion to provide a basis for appropriate balcony expansion. The apartments for the field test were chosen where two balcony types can be compared, and the sound insulation performance for the eighteen balcony windows was measured. The windows installed were typical double window with thickness 16 mm or 22 mm. Measurements of the weighted standard sound pressure level difference showed a decrease of about 3 dB in sound insulation performance due to expansion. For common exterior noise levels of 70-85 dB(A), the indoor noise level can exceed 45 dB(A), the limit level regulated in Korea. However, it was found that the sound insulation performance of the window and the quality of the construction have more influence on indoor noise levels than balcony expansion itself.

  • A numerical method in frequency domain for the analysis of the acoustic wave equation governing the sound field generated by a non-cavitating propeller under a steady of unsteady loading condition is developed. Theory shows that only multiples of the blade passage frequency exist and that the wave number consists of the frequency component due to the nonuniformity of the wake and the Doppler effect originated from the rotation of the blades. Correlation with experiments for a two bladed propeller, designed to be load-free at a particular advance speed, indicate that the thickness effect can be significant in steady case, but can be negligible compared to the unsteady loading effect.

  • The present study describes an experimental work to reduce supersonic jet noise using a control wire device that is placed into the supersonic jet stream. The jet pressure ratio is varied to obtain the supersonic jets which are operated in a wide range of over-expanded to moderately under-expanded conditions. The wire device is composed of long cylinders with a very small diameter. X-type wire device is applied to control the supersonic jet noise, and its location is varied to investigate the effect of the control wire device on supersonic jet noise. A high-quality Schlieren optical system is used to visualize the flow field of supersonic jet with and without the control wire device. Acoustic measurement is performed to obtain the overall sound pressure level and noise spectra. The results obtained show that the present wire device destroys the shock-cell structures, reduces the shock strength, and consequently leading to a substantial suppression of supersonic jet noise.

  • Combustion noise involved with chemical heat release and turbulent process in turbopropulsion systems, gasturbine, industrial furnaces and internal engines is indeed noisy. The experimental study reported in this paper is made to identify a dominant combustion noise in jet flames. Gaseous propane and kerosene fuel have been used with air as the oxidizer in a different jet combustion systems. Combustion and aerodynamic noise are studied through far field sound pressure measurements in an anechoic chamber. And also mean temperature and velocities and turbulent intensities of both isothermal and reacting flow fields were measured. It is shown that axial mean velocity of reacting flow fields is higher about 1 to 3m/sec than that of cold flow in a gaseous combustor. As the gaseous fuel flow rate increases, the acoustic power increases. But the sound pressure level for the spray flame decreases with increasing equivalence ratio. The influence of temperature in the combustion fields due to chemical heat release has been observed to be a dominant noise source in the spray flame. The spectra of combustion noise in gaseous propane and kerosene jet flame show a predominantly low frequency and a broadband nature as compared with the noise characteristics in an isothermal air jet.

  • This paper presents the lousing characteristics and the time. response of ultrasonic focusing transducer which is a coupled system with an electromechanical and an acoustical component. The Finite Element Method and the Hybrid Type Infinite Element Method are applied for the analysis. The position of the focal points and the resolutions is obtained from the loosing characteristics and the time response. It is found that the transducer with the damper, which stabilizes the displacement of the radiation surface, gives a better resolution. In conclusion, the results could be applied to the design and the performance analysis of the ultrasonic focusing transducer.
