  • Because of internal voids ininsulators give rise to partial discharge(PD), which cause local breakdown and even entire insulation breakdown. Treeing due to PD is one of the main causes of breakdown of the insulating materials and reduction of the insulation life. Therefore the necessity for establishing a method to diagnose the aging of insulation materials and to predict the breakdown of insulation has become important. From this viewpoint, our studies diagnose insulation degradation using the method of computer sensing system, which has the advantages of PD and acoustic emission(AE) sensing system. To use advantages of these two methods can be used effectively to search for treeing location and PD in some materials. In analysis method of degradation. We analyzed the PD pulse and AE pulses by regression analysis, compared to these obtained the correlation coefficient and determination coefficient by T-distribution and saw that PD and AE pulses show a similar pattern on the whole. Finally using statically operator such as the center of gravity(G), the gradient of the discharge distribution(C), we have analyzed for the prediction of life which we can be obtained the time, occurred of many pulse of small discharge amplitude.

  • Conventional piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) senor has high sensitivity, but it is very brittle. Recently polymer films such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer have been used as a sensor. The advantages of polymer sensor are the flexibility and mechanical toughness. Simple process and possible several shapes are also additional advantages. Polymer sensor can be directly embedded in a structure. In this study, nondestructive damage sensitivity of single basalt fiber/epoxy composites was investigated with sensor type and thermal damage using AE and oscilloscope. And AE waveform for epoxy matrix with various damage types was compared to each other. The damage sensitivity of two polymer sensors was rather lower than that of PZT sensor. The damage sensitivity of PVDF sensor did not decrease until thermal damage temperature at $80^{\circ}C$ and they decreased significantly at $110^{\circ}C$ However, the damage sensitivity of P(VDF-TrFE) sensor at $110^{\circ}C$ was almost same in no damage sensor. For both top and side impacts, the difference in arrival time increased with increasing internal and surface damage density of epoxy matrix.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a new feature selection method for AE signal classification. The neural network of back propagation algorithm is used. The proposed feature selection method uses the difference between feature coordinates in feature space. This method is compared with the existing methods such as Fisher's criterion, class mean scatter criterion and eigenvector analysis in terms of the recognition rate and the convergence speed, using the signals from the defects in welding zone of austenitic stainless steel and in the metal contact of the rotary compressor. The proposed feature selection methods such as 2-D and 3-D criteria showed better results in the recognition rate than the existing ones.

  • Experimental and discrete element approaches were used to examine the effects of F shape non-persistent joints on the failure behaviour of concrete under uniaxial compressive test. concrete specimens with dimensions of 200 cm×200 cm×50 cm were provided. Within the specimen, F shape non-persistent joint consisting three joints were provided. The large joint length was 6 cm, and the length of two small joints were 2 cm. Vertical distance between two small joints change from 1.5 cm to 4.5 cm with increment of 1.5 cm. In constant joint lengths, the angle of large joint change from 0° to 90° with increments of 30°. Totally 12 different models were tested under compression test. The axial load rate on the model was 0.05 mm/min. Concurrent with experimental tests, numerical simulation (Particle flow code in two dimension) were performed on the models containing F shape non-persistent joint. Distance between small joints and joint angles were similar to experimental one. the results indicated that the failure process was mostly governed by both of the Distance between small joints and joint angles. The axial loading rate on the model was 0.05 mm/min. The compressive strengths of the samples were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the joint angle. In the first, there were only a few acoustic emission (AE) hits in the initial stage of loading, and then AE hits rapidly grow before the applied stress reached its peak. Furthermore, a large number of AE hits accompanied every stress drop. Finally, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both approaches i.e., the experimental testing and the numerical simulation approaches.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of small punch(SP) test using miniaturized specimens as a method for fracture strength evaluation of CANDU pressure tube embrittled by hydrogen. According to the test results, the fracture strength evaluation as a function of hydrogen concentration at $-196^{\circ}C$ was much better than that at room temperature, as the difference of SP fracture energy(Esp) with hydrogen concentration was more significant at $-196^{\circ}C$ than at room temperature for the hydrogen concentration up to 300ppm-H. It was also observed that the peak of average AE energy, the cumulative average AE energy and the cumulative average AE energy per equivalent fracture, strain increased with the increase of hydrogen concentration. From the results of load-displacement behaviors, Esp behaviors, macro- and micro-SEM fractographs and AE test it has been concluded that the SP test method using miniaturized specimen($10mm{\times}10mm{\times}0.5mm$) will be a useful test method to evaluate the fracture strength for CANDU pressure tube embrittled by hydrogen.

  • Patch type piezo-polymer sensors for smart structures were experimented to detect elastic wave. The pencil lead braking test was performed to analyze the characteristics of patch-type piezo-polymer sensors such as polyvinyliden fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylidene fluoride trifluorethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) for several test specimens with various elastic wave velocities and acoustical impedances. The characteristics of the patch-type piezo-polymer sensor were compared with the commercial PZT acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The vacuum grease and epoxy resin were used as a couplant for the acoustic impedance matching between the sensor and specimen. The peak amplitude of elastic wave increased as the diameter of piezo-film and acoustical impedance of the specimen increased. The frequency detection range of the piezo-film sensors decreased with increasing diameter of the piezo-film sensor. The P(VDF-TrFE) sensor was more sensitive than the PVDF sensor.

  • In this paper, chamber(Circuit breaker compartment of C-GIS) made of stainless steel with 4 mm width is used. Artificial defect was made on enclosure or HV conductor of chamber and $SF_6$ gas was injected into it according to pressure. In this experiment, Acoustic emission sensors of different types was used to compare sensitivity to detect acoustic signal occurred by Partial discharge(PD) of according to types and resonance frequency in $SF_6$ gas atmosphere. Sensors used in tests was R6I, R15I and 2/4/6 Pre-Amplifier connected with R6IU without pre. amp. In case of R6IU, gain was adjusted with 40 dB like other sensors and operated by differential mode. Post amplifier(post. amp) and band pass filter(BPF) were developed Gain of post. amp. is 60 dB and BPF has band width of $50{\sim}300$ kHz. Also, envelope circuit developed reduces frequency of AE sensor. As a result, in $SF_6$ atmosphere, R6IU and R6I had resonance frequency of 60 Hz was better than R15I. Also, R6IU was better than R6I because of type property of pre.amp. had differential mode.

  • Fourier transform has been one of the most common tools to study the frequency characteristics of signals. With the Fourier transform alone, however, it is difficult to tell whether signal's frequency contents evolve in time or not. Except for a few special cases, the frequency contents of most signals encountered in the real world change with time. Time-frequency analysis methods are developed recently to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier transform, which can represent the information of signals in time and frequency at the same time. In this study, damage process of a cross-ply carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) under monotonic tensile loading was characterized by acoustic emission. Different kinds of CFRP specimens were used to determine the characteristics of AE signals. Time-frequency analysis methods were employed for the analysis of fracture mechanisms in CFRP such as mix cracking, debonding, fiber fracture and delamination.

  • Renewable energy sources such as wind energy is copiously available without any limitation. Wind turbines are used to tap the potential of wind energy which is available in millions of megawatt. Reliability of wind turbine is critical to extract this maximum amount of energy from the wind. We reviewed different techniques, methodologies, and algorithms developed to monitor the performance of wind turbine as well as for an early fault detection to keep away the wind turbines from catastrophic conditions due to sudden breakdowns. To keep the wind turbine in operation, implementation of Condition Monitoring System (CMS) is paramount, and for this purpose ample knowledge of these types of system is mandatory. So, an attempt has been made in this direction to review maximum approaches related to CMS in this piece of writing.
