This study was performed to evaluate the workability, strengths and durability of polymer concrete using oyster shell that are reclaimed at public shore illegally or leaved on the surroundings of shore to prevent the environmental pollution. We investigated the effect of oyster shell powder (OSP) and $CaCO_3$. on the slump, compressive strength, flexural strength, acid sulfuric and freezing and thawing resistance as a filler of polymer concrete. Modified OSP obtained by crushing oyster shell (less than 0.15 mm size) consists of 60.47 wt% of $SiO_2$ and 39.5 wt% of $CaCO_3$. As a result of slump test by OSP and $CaCO_3$. contents, it is found that slump of specimen used OSP is lower than that used $CaCO_3$. and the more OSP contents are, its slump is increased. Compressive and flexural strength of polymer concrete using OSP are similar or slightly lower than that using $CaCO_3$. In acid sulfuric test for 5 % $H_2SO_4$ and freezing thawing test, regardless of kinds of fillers and contents are not found fatal defects in weight change, falling-off in surface and durability factor.

Transparent conductive films can serve as a critical component in displays, solar cells, lasers, optical communication devices, and solid state lighting. Carbon nanotube (CNT) based transparent conductive films are fabricated on glass and polymer substrates. CNTs typically exist in form of quasi-crystalline bundles or highly entangled bundles containing tens of individual nanotubes. To achieve full potential, CNTs must be dispersed in a solvent or other organic media. CNTs are acid treated with nitric acid then the stable dispersion of CNTs in polar solvent such as alcohols, DMF, etc. is achieved by sonication. The solubility of CNTs correlates well with the area ratio of the D and G bands from Raman spectrum. Thin films are formed from well dispersed CNT solutions using spray coating method. CNT thin films exhibit a sheet resistance ($R_s$) of nearby $10^3\;{\Omega}/sq$ with a transmittance of around 80% on the visible light range, which is attributed by excellent dispersion and interaction among CNTs, solvents and polymeric binders.

Interspecific fusants were made from the cells of two strains of Lactobacillus genus, a streptomycin resistant Lactobacillus sp. JC-7 and a kanamycin resistant L. acidophilus 88. The morphological and physiological properties of the fusants were examined by determining bacteriocin productivity, acid-producing activity, ability of carbohydrates utilization and three important enzyme activities. The fusants produced a bacteriocin against indicator strains and fusant No. 1, 4 exhibited a larger inhibition zone compared to that of L. acidophilus 88. $\beta$-Galactosidase, phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase, lipase activities and resistance to NaCl of Lactobacillus sp. JC-7 were better than those of L. acidophilus 88. Fusant No. 3 and 7 exhibited excellent lipase activities. Protease activity and acid productivity of L. acidophilus 88 were better than those of Lactobacillus sp. JC-7. Proteasse activities of all fusants were higher than those of parental strains, and expecially fusant No. 5 and 7 exhibited excellent proteolysis ability.
The effect of channel-system of zeolite on methanol-to-DME reaction was studied. Results revealed that channels size and topology affect catalyst lifetime, type and location of coke precursors. FER and MFI showed the best resistance towards coke deposition, whilst fast deactivation was observed on MOR. Although the higher concentration and strength of acid sites, FER structure formed a lower coke amount, preferably located within the pores, while coke cluster deposited on the external surface of MOR. Analysis of acid sites distribution and strength was performed during deactivation-regeneration process. Coke location assessment was also supported by molecular simulations.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is caused by insufficient production of insulin, which is involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has insulin resistance in which cells do not respond adequately to insulin. The purpose of this study was to estimate the characteristics of type 1 diabetes using streptozotocin-treated mice (STZ-mouse). The sera samples were collected from the models of hyperglycemic mouse and healthy mouse. Based on the pair-wise comparison, five metabolites were found to be noticeable: glucose, malonic acid, 3-hyroxybutyrate, methanol, and tryptophan. It was very natural glucose was upregulated in STZ-mouse. 3-hyroxybutyrate was also increased in the model. However, malonic acid, tryptophan, and methanol was downregulated in STZ-mouse. Several metabolites acetoacetate, acetone, alanine, arginine, asparagine, histidine, lysine, malate, methionine, ornithine, proline, propylene glycol, threonine, tyrosine, and urea tended to be varied in STZ-mouse while the statistical significance was not stratified for the variation. The multivariate model of PCA clearly showed the group separation between healthy control and STZ-mouse. The most significant metabolites that contributed the group separation included glucose, citrate, ascorbate, and lactate. Lactate did not show the statistical significance of change in t-test while it tends to down-regulated both in DNP and Diabetes.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) supplementation has been suggested to negatively correlate with obesity in humans and other animals. Previous studies, including ours, have demonstrated that a high-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity and related diseases such as hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Here, we investigated the effects of vitamin C on visceral adipocyte hypertrophy and glucose intolerance in C57BL/6J mice. Mice received a low-fat diet (LFD, 10% kcal fat), HFD (45% kcal fat), or the same HFD supplemented with vitamin C (HFD-VC, 1% w/w) for 15 weeks. Visceral adiposity and glucose intolerance were examined using metabolic measurements, histology, and gene expression analyses. Mice in the HFD-VC supplementation group had reduced body weight, mesenteric fat mass, and mesenteric adipocyte size compared with HFD-fed mice. Vitamin C intake in obese mice also decreased the mRNA levels of lipogenesis-related genes (i.e., stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c) in mesenteric adipose tissues, inhibited hyperglycemia, and improved glucose tolerance. In addition, vitamin C attenuated the HFD-induced increase in the size of pancreatic islets. These results suggest that vitamin C suppresses HFD-induced visceral adipocyte hypertrophy and glucose intolerance in part by decreasing the visceral adipose expression of genes involved in lipogenesis.
The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.
The inhibition performance of sodium gluconate (SG), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixture (SG/CTAB) on the corrosion behavior of ${\alpha}$-brass in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICPS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques. The results reveal that SG with 5ppm CTAB, noted SG/CTAB, acts as a good corrosion inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency reached 89% after 24 h immersion in sulfuric acid solution, but slightly decreased at higher temperatures. The polarization curves displayed that SG/CTAB acts as a cathodic-kind inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the addition of 5ppm CTAB to different concentrations of SG considerably increases the corrosion resistance of ${\alpha}$-brass. The SEM-EDS and ICPS analyses support the experimental results. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to understand the adsorption profiles of SG/CTAB on Cu(111) and Zn(111) surfaces.
In this study, the calcium hydroxide, an inherent product of cement hydration, was treated using biomimetic carbonation method of incorporating stearic acid to generate the hydrophobic calcium carbonate on concrete surface. Carbonation reaction was carried out at various $CO_2$ pressure and temperatures and utilizing the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), chloride-ion penetration test apparatus, and compression test machine to investigate the hydrophobicity, durability, and mechanical properties of the synthesized products. Experimental results indicate that the calcium stearate may change the surface property of concrete from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. Increasing reaction temperature can change the particles from irregular shapes to needle-rod structures with increased shear stress and thus favorable to hydrophobicity and microhardness. The contact angle against water for the concrete surface was found to increase with increasing $CO_2$ pressure and temperature, and reached to an optimum value at around $90^{\circ}C$. The maximum static water contact angle of 128.7 degree was obtained at the $CO_2$ pressure of 2 atm and temperature of $90^{\circ}C$. It was also found that biomimetic carbonation increased the permeability, acid resistance and chloride-ion permeability of the concrete material. These unique results demonstrate that the needle-rod structures of $CaCO_3$ synthetized on concrete surface could enhance hydrophobicity, durability, and mechanical properties of concrete.
