  • Poly (L- lactic acid-co-glycine-L-lactic acid) and Poly (L-lactic acid-co-glycine-L- methyl lactic acid ) have been prepared by ring opening polymerization. The monomer 6, 6-dimethyl morpho-line-2, 5-dione was synthesized by the bromoisobutylation of 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide with glycin e. L-lactide, 6-methyl morpholine-2, 5-diode. and 6, 6-dimethyl morpholine-2, 5-diode have been used as starting materials for polydepsipeptides. The synthesized monomers and copolymers have been identified by NMR and FT-lR spa- ctrophotometer. The thermal propert ies and glass transition temperature(Tg) of the copolymers have been measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The Tg values of poly(L-lactic acid co-glycine-L-lactic acid) system are increased from $53^{\circ}C\; to\; 107^{\circ}C$ with increasing the mole fraction of 6-methyl morpholine-2, 5-diode. And the Tg values of poly(L-lactic acid co-glycine-L-methyl lactic acid) system are increased from $53^{\circ}C\;to\;138^{\circ}C$ with increasing the mole fraction of 6. 6-dimethyl morpholine-2, 5-diode The thermal stability of poly (L-lactic acid-co-glycine-L-methyl lactic acid) is slightly greta text than that of poly(L-lactic acid-co-glycine-L-lactic acid) due to the methyl group.

  • Lipid fractions of the roots of cultured (five years old) and wild (eight years old) Codonopsis lanceolata were analyzed. The most abundant fraction of the lipids extracted from cultured and wild roots of C. lanceolata was neutral lipid and the next came phospholipid and glycolipid in descending order. The percentage, however, of the neutral lipid in total lipid was comparatively low, while that of phospholipid, particularly high; 41.30% and 29.34% in that of cultured and wild one respectively. The richest fraction of neutral lipid was triglyceride; 39.49% and 32.88% in the cultured and the wild respectively, and followed by sterol esters and free acid. Noticed amounts of sterol esters and monoglycerides which is able to be used as an emulsifiers, were contained in the neutral lipid of roots; 27.74% and 5.11% respectively. The unsaturated fatty acid fraction of the total lipid hydrolyzate contained in cultured and wild C. lanceolata roots was 72.87% and 74.37% respectively. The main fatty acid contained in the total lipid hydrolyzate was linoleic acid, and followed by linolenic acid palmitic acid. The main saturated fatty acid was palmitic acid and lauric acid.

  • The acidolysis was performed to produce structured lipid with palm mid fraction (PMF) and stearic acid for 7, 24, and 36 hr at $70^{\circ}C$. The reaction was catalyzed by lipozyme TLIM (immobilized lipase from Thermonyces lanuginosa, amount of 10% and 20% by weight of total substrates) in the shaking water bath. The reaction conditions for maximum incorporation of stearic acid on the structured lipid were obtained when molar ratio of PMF and stearic acid was 1:2; concentration of lipozyme TLIM was 20wt%; reaction temperature was $70^{\circ}C$; and reaction time was 36 hr. After reaction under this condition, incorporation of stearic acid in the structured lipid was obtained up to 36.3% while the major components of triacylglycerol were 1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-stearoylglycerol (PPS, 28.19 area%), 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-3-stearoylglycerol (POS/PSO, 20.70 area%) and 1-palmitoyl-2,3-distearoylglycerol (PSS, 18.13 area%). However, the fatty acid composition at the sn-2 position suggested that the positional specificity of lipozyme TLIM was not observed due to the acyl migration.

  • Isolated calf thymus nuclei were in vitro methylated with S- adenosy-L-methyl-$^{14}C$ methionine, and the proteins were fractionated according to their solubilities. Histone fraction ($H_{2}SO_{4}$-soluble fraction) contained approximately 60% total radioactivity incorporated, while "residual protein" which was ($H_{2}SO_{4}$-insoluble contained the remaining radio-activity. The "residual protein" was further fractionated into various acidic proteins, which contained very littel of the radioactivity. However, the protein fraction eluted from DEAE-cellulose with 0.5 N NaOH contained the largest amount of radioactivity. This protein was found to be basic in nature by amino analysis.

  • This study was designed to investigate the angiotensin convertin enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of skipjack/yellowpin tuna cooking broth. The cooking broth was pretreated with membrane filter (MW cut-off 5,000) to obtain the peptide fraction with ACE inhibition. the crude peptides fractionated with Amberlite IR-120 ($H^{+}$ form and followed by Bio-gel P-2, were separated into nine fractions (T-1 to T-9). The maximum inhibitory activity was observed in the fraction T-4 ($IC_{50}$ value, 0.619mg/ml). The abundant amino acids obtained from active fraction T-4 were phenylaanine, leucine and glutamic acid.

  • The antioxidant activity of Paeonia suffruticosa (Paeoniaceae) was determined by measuring the radical scavenging effect on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). The methanolic extract of P. suffruticosa showed the strong antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate soluble fraction was stronger than that of the others ($IC_{50}$, $1.2\;{\mu}g/mL$), and the fraction was subjected to purification by repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Suffruticosol A, suffruticosol B, methyl gallate, and gallic acid, were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction. Their structures were elucidated by physico-chemical and spectroscopic studies.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activity of the extracts of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner). The total phenolic contents in leaf, stem, and root were 165, 74, and 30 tannic acid equivalent mg/g of dried extract or fraction respectively. The butanol and ethylacetate fractions of lotus parts showed higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity than other fractions. 2,2'-Azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation radical scavenging activity also showed the similar result as the DPPH radical scavenging activity. The antioxidative capacity of the ethylacetate fraction was the highest among fractions and its fraction showed higher contents of total polyphenol.

  • Active principles for the anti-fatigue activity of Panax ginseng were studied in mice using the swimming performance method. Ginseng water extract maximized the prolongation of swimming time 18 hours after administration. The potencies of anti-fatigue activities were found as in the order of ether soluble fraction and butanol soluble fraction as those of antioxidant activities previously determined. The anti-oxidant components, maltol, salicylic acid and vanillic acid isolated from the ether soluble fraction of Panax ginseng strongly exhibited the antifatigue activities, where as highly purified crystalline ginsenoside $4Rb_1$, Re and $4Rg_1$ did not.

  • This study was perfonned to investigate effectiveness eness on the gastritis and gastric lesion with the methanol extract of the flower buds of Eugenio caryophyllata. The extract was fractionated with hexane, chIorofonn, ethyl acetate, butanol, followed by bioassay Oil antigastritis. The ethyl acetate and the buthanol fraction reduced significantly HCI.ethanol induced gastric lesion at the dose of 165 and 215 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. These results may indicate that remarkably.effective are ethyl acetate and butanol fractions in HCI-ethanol induced gastric lesion. Howeever, the fractions didn't exhibit any inhibition of gastric secretion and acid output. The buthanol fraction reduced significantly the acetic acid induced ulcer at a daily dose of 215 mg/Kg, p.o., given for 10 days. These result showed considerable inhibit of acetic acid induced ulcer without inhibition of indomethacin induced gastric lesion. The methanol extract showed low acute toxicity with minimum lethal dose of more than 3000 mg/kg, p.o. in mice. In conclusion, Eugenia F10s exhibited antigastric activity which might be attributable to inhibition of gastric secretion. It is indicated that activie component may be present in the buthanol fraction.
