Experimental studies were conducted to identify the active agents for reductive dechlorination of TCE in cement/Fe(II) systems focusing on cement components such as CaO, $Fe_2O_3$, and $Al_2O_3$. A hematite that was used to simulate an $Fe_2O_3$ component in cement was found to have degradation efficiencies (k = 0.641 $day^{-1}$) equivalent to that of cement/Fe(II) systems in the presence of CaO/Fe(II), only when it contained an aluminum impurity$(Al_2O_3)$. When the effect of $Al_2O_3$ content of hematite/CaO/$Al_2O_3$/Fe(II) system was tested, the mole ratio of $Al_2O_3$ to CaO affected the rate of TCE degradation with an optimum ratio around 1 : 10 that resulted in a rate constant of 0.895 $day^{-1}$. In the SEM images of hematite/CaO/$Al_2O_3$/Fe(II) systems, acicular crystals were also found that were also observed in cement/Fe(II) systems. Thus it was suspected that these crystals were reactive reductants and that they might be goethite or ettringite that are known to have acicular structures. An EDS element map analysis revealed that these crystals were not goethite crystals. A subsequent experiment that tested reactivities of compounds formed during the ettringite synthesis showed that ettringite and minerals associated with ettringite formation are not reactive reductants. These observations conclude that a mineral containing CaO and $Al_2O_3$ with a acicular structure could be a major reactive reductant of cement/Fe(II) systems.
Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) occurs in rocks and soils as a result of natural weathering and human activities. The asbestos have been associated with ultramafic and mafic rocks, and carbonate rock. The previous studies on NOA were mainly limited to ultramafic and mafic rock-hosted asbestos in Korea. But, studies on carbonatehosted asbestos are relatively rare. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to investigate mineralogical characteristics of carbonate-hosted and metapelite-hosted NOA and to examine genesis of NOA occurred in the both rocks. The study area was Daerori, Seosan, Chungnam Province, Korea. The major rock formation consisted of limestone and schist which have been known to contain asbestos. Sampling was performed at outcrop which contained carbonate rock showing acicular asbestos crystals as well as pegmatitic intrusion that contacted with carbonate rock. PLM, XRD, EPMA, and EDS analyses were used to characterize mineral assemblages, mineralogical characteristics, and crystal habits of amphiboles and other minerals. BSEM images were also used to examine the genesis of asbestos minerals. The amphibole group was observed in all of the carbonate rocks, and actinolite and tremolite were identified in all rocks. These mineral habits were mainly micro-acicular crystals or secondary asbestiform minerals on the surface of non-asbestiform minerals appearing split end of columnar crystals produced by weathering. BSEM images showed residual textures of samples. The residual textures of carbonate rocks showed dolomite-tremolite-diopside mineral assemblages that formed during prograde metasomatism stage. Some carbonate rock also showed diopside-tremolite-talc mineral assemblages which were formed during retrograde metasomatism stage, as the residual textures. In result the presence of asbestos actinolite-tremolite in the carbonate rocks were confirmed in the areas where actinolite-tremolite asbestos was influenced by low temperature hydrothermal solution during metasomatism stage. These asbestos minerals showed the acicular asbestiform minerals, but even non-asbestiform minerals, a bundle or columnar shape, could transform to asbestiform minerals as potential NOA by weathering because the end of columnar shape of non-asbestiform minerals appeared as multiple acicular shaped fibers.
Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) was studied phenomenologically and the effect of microstructure on HIC was discussed for the steels having two different levels of nonmetallic inclusions. Steels having different microstructures were produced by thermomechanically controlled processes (TMCP) from two different heats which had the different level of nonmetallic inclusions. Ferrite/pearlite (F/P), ferrite/acicular ferrite (F/AF), ferrite/bainite (F/B) were three representative microstructures for all tested steels. For the steels with higher level of inclusions, permissible inclusion level for HIC not to develop was different according to steelmicrostructure. On the contrary, HIC occurred also at the martensite/austenite (M/A) constituents regardless of steel microstructure when they accumulated to a certain degree. It was proved that M/A constituents were easily embrittled by hydrogen atoms. Steels having F/AF is resistant to HIC at a given actual service condition since they covers a wide range of diffusible hydrogen content without developing HIC.

Synthesis of ammonium aluminum hydrogen carbonate(AAHC) via reaction of aluminum bicarbonate and aluminum salt and thermal decomposition is oner of the important processes for preparation of high pure and ultra fine alumina. Kato and coworkers[1] developed this process, at same time Von Erdos and Altorfe[2] found AAHC in the corrosive products of aluminum in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and ammonia. Murase and Iga[3] synthesized acicular AAHC in a autoclave under 60 to 12$0^{\circ}C$ Hayashi[4] optimized the conditions for preparation of AAHC and alumina. Attemp has been made in this paper to reveal the conditions affect the morphology of the synthesized AAHC and the consequently produced alumina.
Silicon nitride-La-silicon oxynitride ceramics were fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The density, crystalline phase and microstructure were compared with those obtained by Hot Pressing (HP). The full density was achieved within 40 min by spark plasma sintering at 1$650^{\circ}C$, whereas the same result was required by hot pressing with a dwell time of 500 min at higher temperature. There were some differences in the microstructure and second phases in the sintered ceramics, which are attributed to the rapid densification in the spark plasma sintering. The fine and acicular grain microstructure appeared in spark plasma sintering.
Acicular type aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by carbonation reaction of $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry and $CO_2$ gas. As increasing the initial concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ion, calcite crystal phase substantially decreased while that of aragonite crystal phase increased. According to XRD and EDS analysis, it was found that the addition of $MgCl_2$ induced the $Mg^{2+}$ ion to substitute in $Ca^{2+}$ ion site of calcite lattice then the unstabled calcite structure be resolved, consequently the growth of calcite structure is interrupted while the growth of aragonite structure is expedited.
The effect of Mn and Ti contents in filler wire on the microstructure and mechanical property of weld metal has been investigated after hybrid welding with ultra fine grained (UFG) steel. The microstructure and distribution of alloy compositions at the top region of weld zone were quite different with those at the bottom region after hybrid welding. The bottom region of weld zone contained higher Mn and Ti contents, and consequently the hardness of bottom region was higher than that of top region. With the increase of Mn and Ti contents in filler wire, the volume percent of acicular ferrite in weld metal decreased, and the weld zone showed higher hardness and better impact property.
Hydrothemal synthesis of PbTiO3 has been investigated. A comprehensive thermodynamic model for heteroge-nous reacting solid-aquous system has been used to predict the optimum condition for the synthesis. Synthesis were performed using lead acetate trihydrate as Pb source crystalline TiO2 as Ti source and KOH as minerali-zer. The synthesis has been examined at low temperature (16$0^{\circ}C$) Phase pure perovskite PbTiO3 has been obtained at high pH(above 0.5 mol KOH). The morphology of PbTiO3 was acicular shape. It has been found sible for a distortion in the c direction. The water is gradully released on annealing the powder to 40$0^{\circ}C$ and the normal crystallographic properties are restored.
In this report, we describe the anatomical features of Gmelina arborea Roxb. belong to the genera of Verbenaceae native to Bangladesh and safranine penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions. The wood of this species was characterized mostly by distinct growth ring boundaries, diffuse-porous, simple perforations, alternate non-vestured intervessel pits, and relatively short vessel elements and medium fibers. Thin to thick walled septate fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits are confined to the radial walls. Tyloses are common. They are paratracheal axial parenchyma vascicnetric and confluent. Rays not higher than 1milimeter are found, and larger rays commonly 4 to 5 seriate are dominantly present, as are multi seriate rays composed of a procumbent ray with 1 row of square or upright cells. Acicular crystals are present in ray cells. Another experiment was taken under consideration to observe the liquid penetration depth in longitudinal and radial directions using safranine. It was found that safranine penetrated easily in longitudinal direction and sapwood was more permeable than heartwood.
The effects of heat input(1.5~3.6kJ/mm) and postweld heat treatment(PWHT, $600^{\circ}C$, 40hr.) on the TMCP HSB600 steel weldments made by GMAW process were investigated. The tensile strength and CVN impact energy of as-welded specimens decreased with increasing heat input. The fine-grained acicular ferrite was mainly formed in the low heat input while polygonal and side plate ferrites were dominated in the high inputs. Meanwhile, tensile strength and hardness of PWHT weldments decreased due to the coarsening of microstructure and reduction of residual stresses.
