  • Nitrogen is an element required to meet optimal plant growth. However, when it was applied (as chemical fertilizer or animal waste) more than the demand of plant and managed it unreasonably can be accumulated in subsoil and leached from soil system. Nitrogen also can be act as an pollutant to soil and water through water contamination if its concentration exceed the critical level. The concentration and downward movement of nitrate in soil is influenced by cultural practices and soil properties. High level of nitrate nitrogen in drinking water is harzadrous for animal and human health, especially for infants and the restoration of the quality of groundwater is impossible by now. Therefore it is the only way to prevent from leaching of nitrate nitrogen to keep the quality of groundwater as vital water resource. The aims of the presentation of this review paper are to understand the relationship between agricultural practices and the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in groundwater and to suggest further informations for the rational management methods to reduce the leaching of nitrate nitrogen in soil.

  • In the study, we Investigated the behavior and removal efficiency of organics, nitrogen. phosphorus with operating conditions in SBRs. Substrate used was synthetic wastewater in which the ratio of $COD_{cr}$. : N : P was 100 : 12 : 2. The cycling the in SBRs was adjusted at 6 hours and 8 hours, and then certainly Included anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Also, for each cycling time. we performed 2 series of experiment simultaneously which was set up 10 days and 20 days as SRT. The removal efficiency of $COD_{cr}$. was over 97% in all operating conditions. In the 6 hours cycling time, the removal efficiency of $PO_4^{3-}-P$ reached almost 100% in steady state. And then we could observe a typical phonemena of phosphorus release and uptake, and the removal efficiency of N was 67%, Residual N source was almost TKN and most of the rest remained as $NO_2-N$. Also the difference in both SRTs was not observed practically. In the 8 hours cycling time, dissolution of sludge appeared. and, $PO_4^{3-}-P was not nearly removed but nitrogen was removed up to 75%, And the residual nitrogen was accumulated as $NO_2^--N$.

Nitrogen Translocation and Dry Matter Accumulation of Direct Seeded Rice in No Tillage Rice-Vetch Cropping

  • Uptake, assimilation and translocation of nitrogen and dry matter assimilation and translocation in ten rice cultivars were observed in no-till direct-sown rice-vetch cropping system. There was a large degree of variation in N-uptake, grain yield, nitrogen translocation efficiency and dry matter assimilation and translocation in tested rice cultivars. Forty kg N/ha base, as compound fertilizer (21-17-21% of N-P-K) three weeks after sowing and 30 kg N/ha top-dressed at panicle initiation stage as in the form of (NH$_4$)$_2$$CO_2$ was applied. ‘Newbounet’, ‘Daesanbyeo’, and ‘Hwayeongbyeo’ showed higher translocation efficiency. The contribution of pre-heading dry matter assimilates to grain ranged from 33% to 99% of dry grain weight. Dry matter of ‘Calrose 76’ was lower than Newbounet but N content was higher in Calrose 76 than Newbonnet. By maturity, N content in vegetative parts declined considerably more than dry matter, vegetative and reproductive parts, N translocation efficiency, and N harvest index. Nitrogen translocation efficiency was greater in ‘Nonganbyeo’, Daesanbyeo, and Newbounet. Grain N concentration was positively correlated with N concentration or N content of the vegetative parts at heading in Nonganbyeo, ‘Dasanbyeo’, ‘Dongjinbyeo’, and Newbonnet. These results indicated that the greater amount of dry matter and N accumulated before heading stage, the higher translocation rates of dry matter to grain and the greater net losses at maturity.

  • Implantation of metals and ceramics with ions of nitrogen and other species has improved surface properties such as friction, wear and corrosion in numerous industrial applications. In recent years, PCB drills tend to be more minimized increasingly as the electronics components have been more highly accumulated and minimized. Therefore nitrogen ion implantation was performed onto PCB drill (0.15 & 0.3 mm in diameter), in order to investigate mechanical properties of WC-Co cermets surface through Nano-indentation tests. PCB drill was implanted at energy of 70 keV, 90 keV, 120 keV and with the dose range of $1{\times}10^{17}$ and $5{\times}10^{17}\;ions/cm^{2}$. After ion implantation, WC-Co PCB drill bits was tested in actual operating situation to apply cutting tools industry and is concluded that the life time of nitrogen ion implanted PCB drills is one and a half times longer than the unimplanted.

Effects of Rice-green Manure Crop Cropping Systems on Soil Characteristics and Rice Yield in Paddy Field

  • Supplying rate of nitrogen at HV was 172.8 kg $ha^{-1}$, HV/B was 64.3 kg $ha^{-1}$ and B was 38.6 kg $ha^{-1}$. The Rice yield was 7.05 ton $ha^{-1}$ when the nitrogen supply was the largest with HV and 5.42 ton $ha^{-1}$ was produced on HV/B. The chemical characteristics of soil have lower pH and exchangeable cations(Ca and Mg) at B, HV and HV/B, rather than at CF because green manure was applied at the former step. However, the physical characteristics of the soil and the porosity showed different tendency which was that it was better at the green manure crops than CF. Nitrogen nutrient balance was showed the most balanced at CF and field of application of green manure crops were required the appropriate management if future crops would be cultivated because nitrogen nutrient could be exhausted or accumulated.

The Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization to the Sward on Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq cv. Gatton) Silage Fermentation

  • To investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the quality of tropical grass silage, guinea grass grown with 3 types of nitrogen fertilizers, namely, urea, ammonium sulfate, and compound fertilizer 804, at 2 fertilization levels, 0.5 and 2.5 kg $Na^{-1}$ (0.5 N and 2.5 N, respectively), was subjected to silage fermentation. Silage fertilized with 0.5 N showed butyrate-dominant fermentation, irrespective of the type of fertilizer used. On the other hand, fermentation of silage fertilized with 2.5 N was significantly affected by the type of fertilizer used; fertilization with ammonium sulfate and compound fertilizer 804 resulted in silage that contained a large amount of butyrate and no lactate; this silage was considered to be of a significantly low quality as compared with silage fertilized with 0.5 N. Among silage fertilized with 2.5 N, the desirable butyrate-free fermentation was found only in urea-fertilized silage, which had the best quality. Grass material fertilized with a high level of urea accumulated a relatively high concentration of nitrate nitrogen (0.22% dry matter). Our results presented here suggest that nitrogen fertilizer management could affect the quality of tropical grass silage and that a relatively high concentration of nitrate in silage may promote butyrate-free fermentation even in tropical grass silage.

Nitrate Reductase Activity by Change of Nitrate Form Nitrogen Content on Growth Stage of Radish (무의 재배기간중 질산태질소의 함량변화에 따른 질산환원효소의 활성)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of nitrogen fertilizer forms, fertilizer and herbicide application rates on growth of radish. The nitrate content and nitrate reductase activity of radish were analyzed along with the growing stage. Nitrate nitrogen was more efficient than ammonium nitrogen for radish. With increasing the fertilizer application rate, accumulated of nitrate content was increased. The amount of nitrate nitrogen was highest at 25days after seeding in petioles, and $32{\sim}39days$ after seeding in root. Nitrate content was decreased as sampling date was delayed, whereas the content increased in the root at early growing stage and then decreased. The nitrate cotent increased in the order of petioles, roots, and leaf blades and nitrate reductase activity increased petioles, leaf blades, and roots. The higher nitrogen fertilizer and herbicide application increased nitrate nitrogen accumulation in radish as compaired with control treatment and nitrate reductase activity showed similar trend.

Rice growth and Nutrient change in paddy soil with reclaimed sewage irrigation (오수처리수 관개방법에 따른 수도 생육과 토양내 영양물질 변화)

  • This study was performed to examine the rice growth and nutrient change in paddy soil with reclaimed sewage irrigation. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the experimental system were analyzed before and after rice culture. The experiment lasted three consecutive years, and this paper presents results of the last year. Additional supply of nutrients to the rice culture by reclaimed sewage irrigation was significant and it increased the yield. Nutrient uptake by rice plant increased with more nutrient supplied, however. there was limit in plant uptake. Nutrient accumulation occurred in the soil and it was more apparent for the phosphorus where most of the remaining quantity was accumulated while substantial amount of nitrogen was lost during the growing season. This study suggested that additional nutrient supply by reclaimed sewage irrigation might be a supplemental benefit to the rice culture, and it can help the fertilization management. However, long term effects of continual reclaimed sewage irrigation should be assessed carefully including nutrient mass balance in the paddy rice culture system.

Kluyveromyces marxianus var. marxianus IFO 1735에 의한 Inulin Fructotransferase의 생산 및 이용에 관한 연구

  • Kluyveromyces marxianus var. marxianus isolated as an inulin-assimilating microorganism produces inulin fructotransferase (inulaseII) which catalyses the conversion of inulin into di-D-fructofuranose 1, 2' : 2, 3' dianhydrde (DFAIII). The DFA produced by the organism was isolated by using active carbon column, and identified as DFAIII by high performance liguid chromatography. The culture medium giving maximum inulaseII production was found to consist of 1% sucrose and 0.75% yeast nitrogen base (YNB). The inulasell production was induced by inulin or sucrose as a carbon source and increased by addition of YNB as a nitrogen source. Optimal initial pH of the culture medium, culture temperature and medium volume for the enzyme production were pH 4.7, 30$\circ$C and 140 ml, respectively. Under the optimal conditions described above, the enzyme activity in the culture supematant reached 4.2 units/ml after cultivation for 36 h. The DFAIII was accumulated at 13.25 mg/ml after 48 h of culture in the Jerusalem artichoke tuber medium.

  • This experiment was conducted to study about nutrient absorption of flag leaf and chaff of rice plant different transplanting date with elevations. Heading stage was delayed by destructive cold temperature or late transplanting. Plant analyses revealed that above poor plants also had higher total nitrogen content, but ower silicate in the flag leaf and sterile chaff. Total nitrogen and silica contents to accumulated in flag leaf between yield was significant high correlation. The chaff of late transplanting and sterility was high total nitrogen. Relationship between silicate absorption and total nitrogen of chaff was significant high correlation. Ripening temperature after heading stage was influenced total nitrogen of chaff. Phosphate, potassium, calssium and silicate contents of chaff increased hight ripening temperature but total nitrogen decreased. Therefore, inorganic element contents of chaff was closely connected with grain sterility.
