Laminar-shear-boxes are widely used to simulate free-field seismic ground response by using a l-g shaking table or geo centrifuge in geotechnical earthquake engineering. This study numerically modeled and compared the ground responses in the free field, rigid box, and laminar shear box by using a 3-D FEM program. It is found from the numerical simulations that the laminar shear box can simulate the free field ground movement more precisely than the rigid box. However, the laminar shear box underestimated the surface acceleration of the free field ground. It also showed low-frequency characteristics probably because the stiffness and inertia effect of surrounding ground are neglected.

This paper presents the development of seismic fragility curves for a precast reinforced concrete bridge instrumented with a structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The bridge is located near an active seismic fault in the Dominican Republic (DR) and provides the only access to several local communities in the aftermath of a potential damaging earthquake; moreover, the sample bridge was designed with outdated building codes and uses structural detailing not adequate for structures in seismic regions. The bridge was instrumented with an SHM system to extract information about its state of structural integrity and estimate its seismic performance. The data obtained from the SHM system is integrated with structural models to develop a set of fragility curves to be used as a quantitative measure of the expected damage; the fragility curves provide an estimate of the probability that the structure will exceed different damage limit states as a function of an earthquake intensity measure. To obtain the fragility curves a digital twin of the bridge is developed combining a computational finite element model and the information extracted from the SHM system. The digital twin is used as a response prediction tool that minimizes modeling uncertainty, significantly improving the predicting capability of the model and the accuracy of the fragility curves. The digital twin was used to perform a nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) with selected ground motions that are consistent with the seismic fault and site characteristics. The fragility curves show that for the maximum expected acceleration (with a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years) the structure has a 62% probability of undergoing extensive damage. This is the first study presenting fragility curves for civil infrastructure in the DR and the proposed methodology can be extended to other structures to support disaster mitigation and post-disaster decision-making strategies.

This paper introduces an experimental verification of a tension estimation method based on system identification approach for a double hanger system on a suspension bridge. A laboratory model of such double hanger system has been made for this study. Total nine cases of the vibration tests have been conducted with respect to three levels of applied tension and three cases of the location of clamp. For a set of the collected acceleration response data, modal analysis has been followed in order to extract the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the selected cable systems. For the extracted modal parameters, the existing tension estimation methods based on the string theory and axially loaded beam theory have been firstly applied to estimate the tensile force on the double hanger cable system. Next, the tensile force on cables has been estimated by the system identification approach. It is seen that the errors in the tension estimation using the frequency-based system identification technique are about 3% for all cases while the estimation error using the existing method is up to 53.1%.
This study analyzes the operational characteristics of 311 aged and non-aged residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) in low-voltage consumer contexts. It investigates the influence of external temperature and harmonics based on the rated current multiples. To simulate temperature variations, a convectional oven was used around the circuit breakers. Additionally, the generation of harmonic reference signals and data measurement for overcurrent experiments were conducted using NI SCXI, myDAQ, and LabVIEW. An observation revealed that as the ambient temperature increased, the operating time of RCCBs decreased in the time delay region. This was attributed to the faster response or bending of the bimetal, which is the tripping element. However, aged RCCBs encountered challenges with tripping outside the protective curve. The operating time of the circuit breakers exhibited an acceleration influenced by the order and content of harmonic currents, potentially leading to malfunctions. Aged RCCBs demonstrated faster operating times than their non-aged counterparts. However, the difference in operating time varied based on the manufacturer's and operating environment of the RCCBs. Frequent malfunctions of RCCBs can result in power outages. In cases where these circuit breakers fail to operate, they can lead to secondary damages, including electrical fires and shocks. Consequently, it is imperative to consider the operating environment of RCCBs and provide appropriate replacement cycles to mitigate these risks.
On February 6, 2023, Türkiye woke up with a strong ground motion felt in a wide geography. As a result of the Kahramanmaraş, Pazarcık and Elbistan earthquakes, which took place 9 hours apart, there was great destruction and loss of life. The 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes occurred on active faults known to pose a high seismic hazard, but their effects were devastating. Seismic code spectra were investigated in Hatay, Adıyaman and Kahramanmaraş where destruction is high. The study mainly focuses on the investigation of ground motion parameters of 6 February Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and the correlation between ground motion parameters. In addition, earthquakes greater than Mw 5.0 that occurred in Türkiye were compared with certain seismic parameters. As in the strong ground motion studies, seismic energy parameters such as Arias intensity, characteristic intensity, cumulative absolute velocity and specific energy density were determined, especially considering the duration content of the earthquake. Based on the study, it was concluded that the structures were overloaded far beyond their normal design levels. This, coupled with significant vertical seismic components, is a contributing factor to the collapse of many buildings in the area. In the evaluation made on Arias intensity, much more energy (approximately ten times) emerged in Kahramanmaraş earthquakes compared to other Türkiye earthquakes. No good correlation was found between moment magnitude and peak ground accelerations, peak ground velocities, Arias intensities and ground motion durations in Türkiye earthquakes. Both high seismic components and long ground motion durations caused intense energy to be transferred to the structures. No strong correlation was found between ground motion durations and other seismic parameters. There is a strong positive correlation between PGA and seismic energy parameter AI. Kahramanmaraş earthquakes revealed that changes should be made in the Turkish seismic code to predict higher spectral acceleration values, especially in earthquake-prone regions in Türkiye.

In general, large-capacity hydrogen storage vessels, typically in the form of vertical cylindrical vessels, are constructed using steel materials. These vessels are anchored to foundation slabs that are specially designed to suit the environmental conditions. This anchoring method involves pre-installed anchors on top of the concrete foundation slab. However, it's important to note that such a design can result in concentrated stresses at the anchoring points when external forces, such as seismic events, are at play. This may lead to potential structural damage due to anchor and concrete damage. For this reason, in this study, it selected an vertical hydrogen storage vessel based on site observations and created a 3D finite element model. Artificial seismic motions made following the procedures specified in ICC-ES AC 156, as well as domestic recorded earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5.0, were applied to analyze the structural behavior and performance of the target structures. Conducting experiments on a structure built to actual scale would be ideal, but due to practical constraints, it proved challenging to execute. Therefore, it opted for an analytical approach to assess the safety of the target structure. Regarding the structural response characteristics, the acceleration induced by seismic motion was observed to amplify by approximately ten times compared to the input seismic motions. Additionally, there was a tendency for a decrease in amplification as the response acceleration was transmitted to the point where the centre of gravity is located. For the vulnerable components, specifically the sub-system (support columns and anchorages), the stress levels were found to satisfy the allowable stress criteria. However, the concrete's tensile strength exhibited only about a 5% margin of safety compared to the allowable stress. This indicates the need for mitigation strategies in addressing these concerns. Based on the research findings presented in this paper, it is anticipated that predictable load information for the design of storage vessels required for future shaking table tests will be provided.

Recently, a permanent magnet synchronous motor of middle and small-capacity has high torque, high precision control and acceleration / deceleration characteristics. But existing control has several problems that include unpredictable disturbances and parameter changes in the high accuracy and rigidity control industry or nonlinear dynamic characteristics not considered in the driving part. In addition, in the drive method for the control of low-vibration and high-precision, the process of connecting the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the load may cause the response characteristic of the system to become very unstable, to cause vibration, and to overload the system. In order to solve these problems, various studies such as adaptive control, optimal control, robust control and artificial neural network have been actively conducted. In this paper, an incremental encoder of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is used to detect the position of the rotor. And the position of the detected rotor is used for low vibration and high precision position control. As the controller, we propose augmented state feedback control with a speed observer and first order deadbeat disturbance observer. The augmented state feedback controller performs control that the position of the rotor reaches the reference position quickly and precisely. The addition of the speed observer to this augmented state feedback controller compensates for the drop in speed response characteristics by using the previously calculated speed value for the control. The first order deadbeat disturbance observer performs control to reduce the vibration of the motor by compensating for the vibrating component or disturbance that the mechanism has. Since the deadbeat disturbance observer has a characteristic of being vulnerable to noise, it is supplemented by moving average filter method to reduce the influence of the noise. Thus, the new controller with the first order deadbeat disturbance observer can perform more robustness and precise the position control for the influence of large inertial load and natural frequency. The simulation stability and efficiency has been obtained through C language and Matlab Simulink. In addition, the experiment of actual 2.5[kW] permanent magnet synchronous motor was verified.

The number of damaged lifeline structures have been increasing with urban acceleration under earthquakes. To predict the damage, damage mitigation technology of lifeline structures should be analyzed using damage prediction technology. Therefore, in this paper, the degree of the fragility of structures under an earthquake was evaluated stochastically through an evaluation of the seismic fragility. The aim was to develop damage prediction technology of sewage pipes among the lifeline facilities. The site response was performed using the data from 158 boreholes in Seoul and 7 real earthquake waves to determine the responses in real urban areas. The seismic fragility was deduced through a total of 29822 time history analysis. In addition, sewer pipes were evaluated and the persisting period was passed by applying the research results of strength reduction which is due to sulphate erosion. As a result, the difference in failure probability between 300 and 800 with the smaller diameter of the representative pipes was approximately double and the size of the pipes has a significant effect on the seismic fragility function. Moreover, the failure probability of a seismic load increases by up to 10 fold as the strength reduction rate increases. The results of this study can be used as a means of predicting the damage and countermeasures of sewer pipes and might be reflected in the seismic design of underground facilities.

The mass and stiffness of upper wall-lower frame system(mixed building structures) change sharply at transfer floor due to different structural system in upper and lower part. These mixed building structures generally show the stiffness, weight or geometric vertical irregularities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the response characteristics of these structures by push-over analysis and nonlinear time history analysis. For four types of analysed models, only the variation of upper wall stories was considered. The conclusions of this study are following; (1) In the push-over analysis, yielding hinges in beams and columns of lower frame occurred at the base shear of similar magnitude in all models. But as the number of stories of upper wall increases, yielding hinges at ends of coupling beams were observed in the small magnitude of base shear. (2) In the nonlinear time history analysis, yielding of lower frame occurred at beams with as small ground acceleration as 55gal, and in upper walls yielding was concentrated on coupling beams and shear walls near the transfer floor. (3) As the number of stories of upper walls decreases, the story stiffness of the lower frames decreased relatively and the occurrence of soft stories in the lower frame was observed.

A method is presented for evaluating the seismic failure probability of bridge structures which show a nonlinear hysteretic dynamic behavior. Bridge structures are modeled as a bilinear dynamic system with a single degree of freedom. We regarded that the failure of bridges will occur when the displacement response of a deck level firstly crosses the predefined limit state during a duration of strong motion. For the estimation of the first-crossing probability of a nonlinear structural system excited by earthquake motion, we computed the average frequency of crossings of the limit state. We presented the non-Gaussian closure method for the approximation of the joint probability density function of response and its derivative, which is required for the estimation of the average frequency of crossings. The failure probabilities are estimated according to the various artificial earthquake acceleration sets representing specific seismic characteristics. For the verification of the accuracy and efficiency of presented method, we compared the estimated failure probabilities with the results evaluated from previous methods and the exact values estimated with the crude Monte-Carlo simulation method.
