Improved Reliability-Based Iterative Decoding of LDPC Codes Based on Dynamic Threshold

  • A serial concatenated decoding algorithm with dynamic threshold is proposed for low-density parity-check codes with short and medium code lengths. The proposed approach uses a dynamic threshold to select a decoding result from belief propagation decoding and order statistic decoding, which improves the performance of the decoder at a negligible cost. Simulation results show that, under a high SNR region, the proposed concatenated decoder performs better than a serial concatenated decoder without threshold with an Eb/N0 gain of above 0.1 dB.

  • In this paper the effect of chaos induced instability in Brillouin-active fiber-ring sensor is described. The inherent optical feedback by the backscattered Stokes wave in optical fiber leads to instabilities in the form of optical chaos. The paradigm of optical chaos in fiber serves as a test for fundamental study of chaos and its suppression and exploitation in practical application in communication and sensing. At weak power, the nature of the Brillouin instability can occur at before threshold. At strong power, the temporal evolution above threshold is periodic and at higher intensity can become chaotic. The threshold for the Brillouin instability in fiber-ring sensor is much lower than the threshold of the normal Brillouin instability process.

One-dimensional and Image Signal Denoising Using an Adaptive Wavelet Shrinkage Filter (적응적 웨이블렛 수축 필터를 이용한 일차원 및 영상 신호의 잡음 제거)

  • In this paper we present a new image denoising filter that can suppress additive noise components while preserving signal components in the wavelet domain. The proposed filter, which we call an adaptive wavelet shrinkage(AWS) filter, is composed of two operators: the wavelet killing operator and the adaptive shrinkage operator. Each operator is selected based on the threshold value which is estimated adaptively by using the local statistics of the wavelet coefficients. In the wavelet killing operation, the small wavelet coefficients below the threshold value are replaced by zero to suppress noise components in the wavelet domain. The adaptive shrinkage operator attenuates noise components from the wavelet components above the threshold value adaptively. The experimental results show that the proposed filter is more effective than the other methods in preserving signal components while suppressing noise.

Agglomeration (Dis-) Economies and Regional Economic Growth as a Spatial Economy (집적 (불)경제와 공간경제로서의 지역 경제 성장)

  • A regional economy is characterized as a spatial economy. However the literature shows that it has been treated as a point economy since space is little recognized in regional modeling due to mathematical complication. This leads to the fact that regional model does not sufficiently represent regional characteristic. This paper attempts to construct a regional growth model in a partial equilibrium framework specifically taking into consideration land as a primary factor. The model is formulated largely neoclassical. Labor is assumed to move in response to differences in the wage rate, while capital is perfectly mobile across regions. The paper shows that two growth equilibrium points exist, one stable equilibrium point and the other unstable equilibrium point. The unstable growth equilibrium indicates the existence of minimum threshold that a region must overcome the minimum threshold to grow constantly. Consequently, directions of regional growth are characterized by two growth paths depending on the initial condition of a region. That is to say, a region below the minimum threshold is converging toward the lower stable equilibrium point over time. When a regional economy initially lies above the minimum threshold, it will grow forever. A regional economy is not thus necessarily converging a stationary is not thus necessarily converging a stationary equilibrium point through factor movement. Finally, the impacts of the presence of agglomeration economies and diseconomies are analyzed through the phase diagram. The paper also shows that agglomeration economies result in lowering the minimum threshold and in escalating the level of stable equilibrium However, when agglomeration diseconomies prevail, the results are opposite, i.e., rising the minimum threshold of growth and lowering the growth level of stable equilibrium.

Change of Percolation Threshold in Carbon Powder-Filled Polystyrene Matrix Composites

  • This paper investigates the change of the percolation threshold in the carbon powder-filled polystyrene matrix composites based on the experimental results of changes in the resistivity and relative permittivity of the carbon powder filling, the electric field dependence of the current, and the critical exponent of conductivity. In this research, the percolation behavior, the critical exponent of resistivity, and electrical conduction mechanism of the carbon powder-filled polystyrene matrix composites are discussed based on a study of the overall change in the resistivity. It was found that the formation of infinite clusters is interrupted by a tunneling gap in the volume fraction of the carbon powder filling, where the change in the resistivity is extremely large. In addition, it was found that the critical exponent of conductivity for the universal law of conductivity is satisfied if the percolation threshold is estimated at the volume fraction of carbon powder where non-ohmic current behavior becomes ohmic. It was considered that the mechanism for changing the gaps between the carbon powder aggregates into ohmic contacts is identical to that of the connecting conducting phases above the percolation threshold in a random resister network system. The electric field dependence is discussed with a tunneling mechanism. It is concluded that the percolation threshold should be defined at this volume fraction (the second transition of resistivity for the carbon powder-filled polystyrene matrix composites) of carbon powder.

Characteristics of Heat Acclimatization for Major Korean Cities (한국 주요도시의 폭염에 대한 기후 순응도 특성)

  • Vulnerability to heat was examined for populations of 6 major cities in South Korea (Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan). Daily excess mortality and maximum temperature from 1991 to 2005 were employed in this study. The results show that the standardized mortality increase associated with a $1^{\circ}C$ increase in daily maximum temperature above the city-specific threshold explains the heat acclimatization effect better than the threshold temperature itself. The estimated increase in mortality (standardized per 10 million population) associated with a $1^{\circ}C$ increase in temperature above the threshold is 4.8 in Incheon, 4.7 in Seoul, 4.3 in Daejeon, 2.8 in Gwangju, 2.4 in Daegu, and 1.5 in Busan, well reflecting the latitudinal locations and local climates of each city. Climate models project more frequent, more intense, and longer lasting heat waves in most land areas in both hemispheres in the 21st century under increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. In order to mitigate the adverse human health impacts due to excess heat, more detailed characteristics of acclimatization to heat need to be understood and quantified.

Development of Rotordynamic Analytical Model and Analysis of Vibration Response of a Turbocharger (터보차져의 로터다이나믹 해석모델 개발 및 진동응답 해석)

  • This paper deals with the development of analytical model of a turbocharger and its detail rotordynamic analysis. Two analytical models, which are verified by experimental modal testing, are proposed and the analytical model including rotor shaft extended to compressor and turbine wheel end side is chosen. A rotordynamic analysis includes the critical map, Campbell diagram, stability, and unbalance response, especially nonlinear transient response considering nonlinear fluid film force at bearings. Although the linearized analysis accurately predicts the critical speeds, stability limit, and stability threshold speed, the predicted vibration results are not valid for speeds above the stability threshold speed since the rotor vibrates with a subsynchronous component much larger than the one synchronous with rotor speed. Hence, for operating speed above the stability threshold, a nonlinear transient analysis considering nonlinear fluid film force must be performed in order to accurately predict vibration responses of rotor and guarantee results of analysis.

Simulation of Pore Interlinkage in the Rim Region of High Burnup $UO_2$Fuel

  • Threshold porosity above which fission gas release channels would be formed in the rim egion of high burnup UO$_2$ fuel was estimated by the Monte Carlo method and Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. With the assumption that both rim pore and rim grain can be represented by cube, pore distribution in the rim was simulated 3-dimensionally by the Monte Carlo method according to porosity and pore size distribution. Then, using the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm, the fraction of open rim pores interlinked to the outer surface of a fuel pellet was derived as a function of rim porosity. The simulation showed that porosity of 24-25% is the threshold above which the number of rim pores forming release channels increases very rapidly. On the other hand, channels would not be formed if the porosity is less than about 23.5%. This is consistent with the observation that, for porosity less than 23.5%, almost no fission gas is released in the rim. However, once the rim porosity reaches beyond 25%, extensive open paths would be developed and considerable fission gas release would start in the rim.

Redefining Liquidity for Monetary Policy

  • This paper proposes a monetary aggregate "Liquidity" that could serve as a useful indicator for gauging the appropriateness of monetary policy. If liquidity rises above a certain threshold, it is signaling that monetary policy is losing traction due to structural and other impediments even when the inflation gap remains open. This indicator supplements the financial cycle approach but adds value by providing a benchmark that is derived from the national account, and not based on its own trend. Over the last two decades, each time this measure rose above the threshold range, it was followed by a decline in GDP growth. The latter was greater when accompanied by a high physical asset value to GDP, e.g., an elevated property market.

Development of an Edge-Based Algorithm for Moving-Object Detection Using Background Modeling

  • Edges are a robust feature for object detection. In this paper, we present an edge-based background modeling method for the detection of moving objects. The edges in the image frames were mapped using robust Canny edge detector. Two edge maps were created and combined to calculate the ultimate moving-edge map. By selecting all the edge pixels of the current frame above the defined threshold of the ultimate moving edges, a temporary background-edge map was created. If the frequencies of the temporary background edge pixels for several frames were above the threshold, then those edge pixels were treated as background edge pixels. We conducted a performance comparison with previous works. The existing edge-based moving-object detection algorithms pose some difficulty due to the changes in background motion, object shape, illumination variation, and noises. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm can detect moving objects efficiently in real-world scenarios.
