Carbon Fibre Mesh for the Repair of Abdominal Hernias in Bovines and Caprines: A Review of Nine Clinical Cases

  • During a 4-year period (2001-2005) 09 animals were surgically treated because of abdominal wall defects (hernia). Out of 9 animals 8 were bovines and one caprine. In each case the defect was repaired with carbon fibre mesh. All the cases were successfully treated and no complication was observed up to six months postoperatively.

  • Abdominal compartment syndrome is one cause of deep vein thrombosis of lower extremity. Although prophylactic dose of anticoagulation agent is safely started after 24~48 hours without the evidence of active bleeding, there may be bleeding complication related to invasive procedure which trauma victims undergo. Inferior vena cava filter should be considered in the treatment plan of this complex situation.

  • This is a case report involving a novel setting of sonographic scan for thickness of superficial abdominal fat and a non-invasive approach for reduction of the fat thickness. A 38-year-old woman complained of her abdominal contour asymmetry after the laser-assisted liposuction performed two years ago. Compression-free sonographic scanning confirmed that her superficial abdominal fat was thicker in left side than that of right side. After 9 sessions of 40KHz therapeutic ultrasound, the contour asymmetry was reduced.

  • Eight zoeal stages and one decapodid of the hippolytid shrimp Latreutes acicularis Ortmann, 1890 are described from laboratory-reared material hatched from egg from ovigerous females collected from Shimoda, Japan. The presence of a minute dorsomedian protuberance on the third abdominal somite, the spinules on the dorsal margin of the fourth and fifth abdominal somites, and a pair of dorsolateral spines on the fourth and fifth abdominal somites readily distinguish the larvae of L. acicularis from those of L. anoplonyx Kemp, 1914 and L. laminirostris Ortmann, 1890, the other two known larvae of Latreutes from East Asia.

  • The major goals of the poultry industry are to increase the carcass yield and to reduce carcass fatness, mainly the abdominal fat pad. The increase in poultry meat consumption has guided the selection process toward fast-growing broilers with a reduced feed conversion ratio. Intensive selection has led to great improvements in economic traits such as body weight gain, feed efficiency, and breast yield to meet the demands of consumers, but modern commercial chickens exhibit excessive fat accumulation in the abdomen area. However, dietary composition and feeding strategies may offer practical and efficient solutions for reducing body fat deposition in modern poultry strains. Thus, the regulation of lipid metabolism to reduce the abdominal fat content based on dietary composition and feeding strategy, as well as elucidating their effects on the key enzymes associated with lipid metabolism, could facilitate the production of lean meat and help to understand the fat-lowering effects of diet and different feeding strategies.

  • We report a case of celiac artery dissection after abdominal blunt trauma. A 29-year-old man visited the emergency room for acute left periumbilical pain after abdominal blunt trauma from his child. Computed tomography showed a wedge-shaped splenic infarction with splenic artery thrombus. He was hospitalized for careful observation, and after two days, follow-up computed tomographic angiography showed a progressed celiac artery dissection that involved common hepatic artery and an increased extent of splenic infarction. He underwent conventional angiography, and a self-expandable stent was placed between the celiac axis and the common hepatic artery. After two days, follow-up computed tomographic angiography showed good hepatic arterial blood flow via the stent and no progression of splenic infarction. After ten days, he was discharged without complications.

  • Inulin space was measured in the normal control rabbits and abdominal vena cava partially ligated (to about 1/2 of normal lumen) rabbits. Eleven rabbits served as the control and 12 rabbits after 7 to 10 days of abdominal vena cava ligation were used. Inulin space in the normal rabbits was $376{\pm}102.70\;ml\;(Mean{\pm}S.D.)\;or\;18.0{\pm}5.21%$ body weight. After 7 to 10 days of abdominal vena cava partial ligation inulin space decreased and the values were; $253{\pm}145.79\;ml\;or\;14.4{\pm}8.55%$ body weight.

Cerebral Toxoplasmosis Combined with Disseminated Tuberculosis

  • A 24-year-old man presented with mental change, fever, abdominal pain, tenderness and palpable mass on the lower abdomen. He was a non-Korean engineer and did not accompany a legal guardian, so medical history taking was difficult due to his mental status. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple rim-enhanced lesions of the brain, and abdominal computed tomography showed huge paraspinal abscess. Chest X-ray and computed tomography showed poorly defined nodular opacities. We initially thought that this patient was infected with toxoplasmosis with typical cerebral image finding and immunoglobulin laboratory finding of cerebrospinal fluid and serum study. The abdominal abscess was confirmed as tuberculosis through the pathologic finding of caseous necrosis. We used anti-tuberculosis medication and anti-toxoplasmosis medication for almost 4 months, and then his clinical state and radiological findings were considerably improved.

The Effects of Abdominal Breathing on the Preoperative Anxiety and Blood Pressure of Upper and Lower Limbs Surgical Patients (복식호흡이 상.하지 수술 환자의 수술 전 불안과 혈압에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study were to examine the effects of abdominal breathing on preoperative anxiety and blood pressure. Methods: The research was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 60 patients that operated on under local anesthetic. Thirty subjects in the experimental group and 30 subjects in the control group. Data on anxiety and blood pressure for this study were collected from them. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, $X^2$-test, paird t-test. Results: After abdominal breathing, there was a statistically significant decline in the psychological anxiety level of the experimental group. With regard to the physical anxiety level, no statistically significant drop was detected in blood pressure. Conclusion: The findings of the study confirmed that abdominal breathing reduced preoperative anxiety of upper and lower limbs surgical patients.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed at developing an efficient nursing method for the management of constipation by comparing the effects of abdominal meridian massage on the symptoms of constipation. Method: The subjects were determined by the Rome II criteria and the Constipation Assessment Scale from Aug 30 through Sep 26, 2002. They were randomly divided into two groups: one experimental group of 16, another control group of 15. Abdominal meridian massage was given to the experimental group and no massage was given to the control group. The frequency of defecation and severity of constipation by CAS were measured. The data was analyzed with the t-test, $x^2$-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: There was a significant improvement in frequency of defecation, and severity of constipation in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Abdominal meridian massage can be considered an effective nursing method for the management of constipation among CVA patients.
