  • This paper discusses the planarization process of thick copper film structure used for power supply device. Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) has been used to remove a metal film and obtain a surface planarization which is essential for the semiconductor devices. For the thick metal removal, however, the long process time and other problems such as dishing, delamination and metal layer peeling are being issued, Compared to the traditional CMP process, Electro-chemical mechanical planarization(ECMP) is suggested to solve these problems. The two-step process composed of the ECMP and the conventional CMP is used for this experiment. The first step is the removal of several tens ${\mu}m$ of bulk copper on patterned wafer with ECMP process. The second step is the removal of residual copper layer aimed at a surface planarization. For more objective comparison, the traditional CMP was also performed. As an experimental result, total process time and process defects are extremely reduced by the two-step process.

  • We demonstrated stability-enhanced liquid crystal (LC) displays using pixel-isolated LC mode in which LC molecules are isolated in pixel by horizontal polymer layer and vertical polymer wall. The device shows good electro-optic properties against external point or bending pressure due to the polymer structures. The polymer wall acts as supporting structure from mechanical pressure and prevents the cell gap from bending. Moreover, the polymer layer acts as an adhesive to ensure a tight attachment of the two substrates. We present herein various methods for producing polymer structures by using an anisotropic phase separation from LC and polymer composites or patterned micro-structures for stable flexible liquid crystal displays.

  • A comparison study of carbon coating on $LiFePO_4$ was done with two different carbon sources-petroleum pitch and Ketjen black. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis were applied to the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$. $LiFePO_4$ which was carbon-coated with petroleum pitch showed more uniform carbon layer and ordered carbon structure. Such uniformity and ordered structure of carbon coating layer resulted in higher initial discharge capacity and better rate capability.

  • Water mass distribution and currents were investigated off the east coast of Korea near the Hupo Bank using the CTD and ADCP data from June to August 2010. The typical water masses were: (1) Tsushima Surface Water (TSW) from the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) in the surface layer, (2) a shallow thermocline at 20-30 m depth, (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) of high salinity (>34.2) below the pycnocline, (4) North Korean Cold Water (NKCW) of low salinity (<34.05) and low temperature (<4°C) in the lower layer. In June, a double eddy was observed in which a cold filament intruded cyclonically from the south around a pre-existing cold-core eddy. A burst of strong southward current was recorded in mid-August due to a warm filament from the meandering EKWC. Current in the N-S direction was predominant due to topographic effects, and the direction of the northward EKWC was frequently reversed in its direction due to the eddy-filament activity, whereas the influence of the wind was not noticeable. The vertical structure of the current was of a two-layer system, with the northward EKWC in the upper layer and weak southward flows corresponding to the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) in the deeper layer.

  • Recent years, supercapacitors have been attracting a growing attention as an efficient energy storage, due to their long-lifetime, device reliability, simple device structure and operation mechanism and, most importantly, high power density. Along with the increasing interest in flexible/stretchable electronics, the supercapacitors with compatible mechanical properties have been also required. A eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metal could be a strong candidate as a soft electrode material of the supercapacitors because of its insulating surface oxide layer for electric double layer formation. Here, we report the electrochemical study on the charging/reaction process at the interface of EGaIn liquid metal and electrolyte. Numerical fitting of the charging current curves provides the capacitance of EGaIn/insulating layer/electrolyte (${\sim}38F/m^2$). This value is two orders of magnitude higher than a capacitance of a general metal electrode/electrolyte interface.

  • What causes the transformation of a solar cell is the behavior difference of thermal expansion occurred between the substrate and the layer of semiconductor used in the solar cell. Therefore, the substrate has to possess a behavior of thermal expansion that is similar with that of semiconductor layer. This study employed electroforming to manufacture Fe-Ni alloy materials of different compositions. To verify the result from a finite element analysis, a two-dimensional Mo substrate was calculated and its verification experiment was conducted. The absolute values from the finite element analysis of Mo/substrate structure and its verification experiment showed a difference. However, the size of residual stress of individual substrate compositions had a similar tendency. Two-dimensional CIGS/Mo/$SiO_2$/substrate was modeled. Looking into the residual stress of CIGS layer occurred while the temperature declined from $550^{\circ}C$ to room temperature, the smallest residual stress was found with the use of Fe-52 wt%Ni substrate material.

  • The objectives of color reproduction in printing, photography, and digital hard-copy is an important problem. The Color is obsorved differently from illumination an obsorvation condition, and varied according to individual taste. Generally, the color reproduction system is designed with colorimetric color reproduction method. But the color gamut of the color reproduction system is different each other and the one device has nonlinear relationalship between the other. By these reason, to predict the reproduced color based on linear color transform method is difficult. Some methods of non-linear color transform by neural network was proposed. These method was theoretical useful and valid to transform from CIE color to device color. But more studies were needed to realize the non-linear color transform system. In this paper, we described a method to realize the non-linear color transform system by neural network. The optimum structure of the non-linear color transform system was found out. The structure of descrived system has four layer( input, output and two hidden layers.) Input and output layer have 3 units, and a hidden layer has 27 units. We trained 216 color-samples, and estimated the realized color transform system by 1115 color-samples. The average color difference between original color samples and transformed color samples was 2.54.

  • Interface effects on properties of NTC thermistors having Mn-Co-O spinel crytal structure system are analyzed by a mixing rule in case of mixed types and layered types between CuO and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ added compounds. With adding CuO and $Al_{2}O_{3}$, The compounds form completely solid solution and their resistance and B constant are changed due to the variation of conduction electrons by their ionic substitutions. The properties of mixed NTC thermistors are depended on the logarithmic mixing rule by a dispersed phase and they show slightly lower values due to the lattice mixing affect in compared with calculated values. The resistance of layered NTC thennistors is depended upon the series mixing rule containing the value of an interface layer and effected by the variation of its thickness, and it is changed rapidly to the logarithmic mixing rule by the connection between two layers with increasing the interface layer.

  • The oxidation treatment of several carbon materials with a sodium chlorate and 70 wt.% of nitric acid, combined with heat treatment, were attempted to achieve an electrochemical active material with a larger capacitance. Among pitch, needle coke, calcinated needle coke and natural graphite, the structure of needle coke and calacinated needle coke were changed to the graphite oxide structure with the expansion of the inter-layer. On the other hand, the calcinated needle coke after oxidation and heating at $200^{\circ}C$ has exhibited largest capacitance per weight and volume of 29.5 F/g and 24.5 F/ml at the two-electrode system in the potential range of 0 to 2.5 V. The electrochemical performance of the calcinated needle coke was discussed with the phenomenon of the electric field activation and the formation of new pores between the expanded inter-layer at first charge.

  • Until now, the thickness design of anti-freezing layer has been empirically conducted using the frost depth determined from the freezing index. This approach cannot consider the structural properties of anti-freezing layer, which can cause the over-design of pavement structure. This paper presents results of structural evaluation of anti-freezing layer using the Falling Weight Deflectormeter (FWD) deflections. The FWD testing was directly conducted on top of the subbase layer located at the embankment, cutting, and boundary area of each section. It is observed from this testing that the center deflections of pavement structure with anti-freezing layer are smaller than those without anti-freezing layer. The deflection reduction rates are 15~55% in the embankment, 11~64% in the cutting, and 2~38% in the boundary, respectively. It was also found that the use of antifree zing layer enables to reduce the Surface Curvature Index (SCI) values up to 24 percent. Fatigue lives show that pavement structure with antifreezing layer are about two times higher than the those without anti-freezing layer. This fact indicates that the anti-freezing layer should be considered as a structural layer in the asphalt pavement system.
