  • Vibration isolation of mechanical systems, in general, is achieved through passive or active vibration isolators. Passive vibration isolator has an inherenrt performance limitation. Whereas, active vibration isolator provides significantly superior vibration-isolation performance at the cost of energy sources and sensors. Recently, in many cases, such as suspension system, precision machinery ... etc, active isolation system outweighs its limitation. Therefore, many studies, researches, and applications are carried out in this field. In this study, vibration-isolation characteristics of an active vibration control system using electromagnetic force actuator are investigated. Several control algorithms including optimal, feedforward are used for active vibration isolation. From the experimental results of each algorithm, effective control algorithms for this active vibration-isolation system are proposed.

This active isolation system consists of a-pairs of PZT actuators bonded on a S-shaped aluminum plate and the passive damping material. The active system is connected to the passive system in series. In this paper, one of the popular control techniques which have been successfully applied to the smart structure is the Positive Position Feedback(PPF) control. The digital PPF control lows downloaded to the DSP chip and a main program, which runs SISO PPF algorithm. The structure and dynamic characteristics of the proposed active vibration isolation system and described in detail. To demonstate the effectiveness of the active vibration control, the PPF controller is first employed. Experimental results show that the active vibration isolation is possible by means of the proposed system.

  • This work evaluates the influence of negative stiffness on the performances of various vehicle suspension systems, and proposes a re-centering negative stiffness device (NSD). The re-centering NSD consists of a passive magnetic negative stiffness spring and a positioning shaft with a re-centering function. The former produces negative stiffness control forces, and the latter prevents the amplification of static spring deflection. The numerical simulations reveal that negative stiffness can improve the ride comfort of a vehicle without affecting its road holding abilities for either passive or semi-active suspension systems. In general, the improvement degree of ride comfort increases as negative stiffness increases. For passive suspension system, negative stiffness brings in negative stiffness feature in the control forces, which is helpful for the ride comfort of a vehicle. For semi-active suspensions, negative stiffness can alleviate the impact of clipped damping in semi-active dampers, and thus the ride comfort of a vehicle can be improved.

  • To control the vibration transmitted to the precision instruments from ground has always been of great interest among the researchers. This paper proposes a single axis vibration isolation system which can be used as a module far a table top six axis isolator for highly precise measurement and actuation system. The combined active-passive isolation principle is used for vertical vibration isolation by mounting the instrument on a passively damped isolation system made of Elastomer along with the active stage in series which consists of very stiff piezo actuator. The active stage works in combination with the passive stage for working as a very low frequency vibration attenuator. The active stage is isolated from the payload disturbance through the Passive stage and thus modularity in control is achieved. This made the control algorithm much easier as it does not need to be tuned to specific payload.

  • In this paper, a new control algorithm of series active power filter is proposed to reduce harmonic generated from nonlinear load in power system. In conventional control algorithm, harmonic current must be calculated firstly, and then compensation voltage was calculated by using the results but the proposed control algorithm can calculate compensation voltage directly. Compensating principle of proposed control algorithm is presented in detail. A combined system of series active filter and passive filter is composed in order to experiment. Experiment was carried out to verify proposed control algorithm of series active filter and experimental results are analyzed.

  • Damped outrigger systems have been proposed as a novel energy dissipation system to protect tall buildings from severe earthquakes and strong wind loads. In this study, semi-active damping devices such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers instead of passive dampers are installed vertically between the outrigger and perimeter columns to achieve large and adaptable energy dissipation. Control performance of semi-active outrigger damper system mainly depends on the control algorithm. Fuzzy logic control algorithm was used to generate command voltage sent to MR damper. Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the fuzzy logic controller. An artificial earthquake load was generated for numerical simulation. A simplified numerical model of damped outrigger system was developed. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that the semi-active damped outrigger system can effectively reduce both displacement and acceleration responses of the tall building in comparison with a passive outrigger damper system.

  • This paper presents a hybrid system combining lead rubber bearings and hydraulic actuators controlled by a μ-synthesis method for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. A hybrid system could alleviate some of restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone because multiple control devices are operating. Therefore, the overall control performance of a hybrid system may be improved compared to each system, however the overall system robustness may be negatively impacted by active device in the hybrid system or active controller may cause instability due to small margins. Therefore, a f-synthesis method that guarantees the robust performance is considered to enhance the possibility of real applications of the control system. The control performances of the proposed control system are compared with those of passive, active, semiactive control systems and hybrid system controlled by LQG algorithm and an extensive robust analysis with respect to stiffness and mass matrices perturbation and time delay of actuator is performed. Numerical simulation results show that the control performance of the proposed control system is superior to that of the passive system and slightly better than that of the active and semiactive systems and two hybrid systems show similar control performances. Furthermore, the hybrid system controlled by a μ-synthesis method shows the good robustness without loss of control performances. Therefore, the proposed control system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridge which contains many uncertainties.

  • Protection of structures against natural hazards such as earthquakes has always been a major concern. Semi-active control combines the reliability of passive control and versatility and adaptability of active control. So it has recently become a preferred control method. This paper proposes an algorithm based on Uniform Deformation Theory to mitigate vulnerable buildings using magneto-rheological (MR) damper. Due to the successful performance of fuzzy logic in control of systems and its simplicity and intrinsically robustness, it is used here to regulate MR dampers. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is also used as an adaptive method to develop a fuzzy control algorithm that is able to create uniform inter-story drifts. Results show that the proposed algorithm exhibited a desirable performance in reducing both linear and nonlinear seismic responses of structures. Performance of the presented method is indicated in compare with passive-on and passive-off control algorithms.

  • A hybrid control system is presented for seismic-resistant building structures with and without soil-structure interaction (SSI). The hybrid control is a damper-actuator-bracing control system composed of passive and active controllers. An intelligent algorithm is developed for the hybrid system, in which the passive damper is designed for minor and moderate earthquakes and the active control is designed to activate when the structural response is greater than a given threshold quantity. Thus, the external energy for active controller can be optimally utilized. In the control of a multistory building, the controller placement is determined by evaluating the optimal location index (OLI) calculated from six earthquake sources. In the study, the soil-structure interaction is considered both in frequency domain and time domain analyses. It is found that the interaction can significantly affect the control effectiveness. In the hybrid control algorithm with intelligent strategy, the working stages of passive and active controllers can be different for a building with and without considering SSI. Thus SSI is essential to be included in predicting the response history of a controlled structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a procedure for evaluating quantitatively the increase of the equivalent damping ratio of a structure with passive/active vibration control systems subjected to a stationary wind load. A Lyapunov function governing the response of a structure and its differential equation are formulated first. Then the state-space equation of the structure coupled with the secondary damping system is solved. The results are substituted into the differential equation of the Lyapunov function and its derivative. The equivalent damping ratios are obtained from the Lyapunov function of the combined system and its derivative, and are used to assess the control effect of various damping devices quantitatively. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is confirmed by applying it to a structure with nonlinear as well as linear passive/active control systems.
