In solving the Travel Salesman Problem(TSP), we easily reach local optimal solutions with the existing methods such as TWO-OPT, THREE-OPT, and Lin-Kernighen. Tabu search, as a meta heuristic, is a good mechanism to get an optimal or a near optimal solution escaping from the local optimal. By utilizing AI concepts, tabu search continues to search for improved solutions. In this study, we focus on developing a new neighborhood structure that maintains the feasibility of the tours created by exchange operations in TSP. Intelligent methods are discussed, which keeps feasible tour routes even after exchanging several edges continuously. An extended tabu search model, performing cycle detection and diversification with memory structure, is applied to TSP. The model uses effectively the information gathered during the search process. Finally, the results of tabu search and simulated annealing are compared based on the TSP problems in the prior literatures.
A vehicle suspension system performs two functions, the ride quality and the stability, which conflict with each other. An active suspension system has an external energy source, from which energy is always supplied to the system for continuous control of vehicle motion. Therefore, an active suspension system can have even more improved performance. Some control laws have been proposed for active suspension system, but in this paper, an optimal variable structure control(VSC) is proposed. The VSC method is well suited for a class of nonlinear system and can address the robustness issues to constant modelling errors and disturbances. This paper develops an optimal VSC controller and compares its performance to those of a passive suspension system and an active suspension system with an optimal controller. The transient and frequency responses are analyzed respectively.
In this paper, a systematic technique is proposed for the optimal placement and design of nonlinear dampers for building structures. The concept of Output Frequency Response Function (OFRF) is applied to analytically represent the output frequency response of a building frame where nonlinear viscous dampers are fitted for suppression of vibration during earthquakes. An effective algorithm is derived using the analytical representation to optimally determine the locations and parameters of the nonlinear dampers. Various numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the optimal designs. A comparison of the vibration suppression performance with that of the frame structure under a random or uniform damping allocation is also made to demonstrate the advantages of the new designs over traditional solutions.
Metallic sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell subject to 3-point bending have been analyzed and then optimized for minimum weight. Inner dimpled shells can be easily fabricated by press or roll with high precision and bonded with same material skin sheets by resistance welding or adhesive bonding. Metallic sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can be optimally designed for minimum weight subject to prescribed combination of bending and transverse shear loads. Fundamental findings for lightweight design are presented through constrained optimization. Failure responses of sandwich plates are predicted and formulated with an assumption of narrow sandwich beam theory. Failure is attributed to four kinds of mechanisms: face yielding, face buckling, dimple buckling and dimple collapse. Optimized shape of inner dimpled shell structure is a hemispherical shell to minimize weight without failure. It is demonstrated that bending stiffness of sandwich plate is 2 or 3 times larger than solid plates with the same strength. Failure mode boundaries and iso-strength lines dependent upon the geometry and yield strain of the material are plotted with respect to geometric parameters on the failure map. Because optimal parameters of maximum strength for given material weight can be selected from the map, analytic solutions for maximum strength are expressed as a function of only material property and proposed strength. These optimal parameters match well with numerical optimal parameters.
To detect and prevent structural damage caused by various loads on marine structures and ships, structural health monitoring procedure is essential. Estimating loads acting on the structures which are measured by sensors that are mounted properly are crucial for structural health monitoring. However, attaching an excessive number of sensors to the structure without consideration can be inefficient due to the high costs involved and the potential for inducing structural instability. In this study, we introduce a method to determine the optimal number of sensors and their optimized locations for strain measurement sensors, allowing for accurate load estimation throughout the structure using model expansion method. To estimate the loads exerted on the entire structure with minimal sensors, we construct a strain-load interpolation matrix using the strain mode shapes of the finite element (FE) model and select the optimal sensor locations by applying D-Optimal Design and the row exchange algorithm. Finally, we estimate the loads exerted on the entire structure using the model expansion method. To validate the proposed method, we compare the results obtained by applying the optimal sensor placement and model expansion method to an FE model subjected to arbitrary loads with the loads exerted on the entire FE model, demonstrating efficiency and accuracy.
A smart connective control system was invented recently for coupling control of adjacent buildings. Previous studies on this topic focused on development of control algorithm for the smart connective control system and design method of control device. Usually, a smart control devices are applied to building structures after structural design. However, because structural characteristics of building structure with control devices changes, a iterative design is required for optimal design. To defeat this problem, an integrated optimal design method for a smart connective control system and connected buildings was proposed. For this purpose, an artificial seismic load was generated for control performance evaluation of the smart coupling control system. 20-story and 12-story adjacent buildings were used as example structures and an MR (magnetorheological) damper was used as a smart control device to connect adjacent two buildings. NSGA-II was used for multi-objective integrated optimization of structure-smart control device. Numerical simulation results show the integrated optimal design method proposed in this study can provide various optimal designs for smart connective control system and connected buildings presenting good control performance.

In this paper, the discrete optimal control is made to have the robust property of Sliding mode controller. A augmented system with a virtual state is constructed for this objective and noble sliding surface is constructed based on this system. The sliding surface is the same as the optimal control trajectory in the original system. The states follow the optimal trajectory even if there exist uncertainties. The reaching phase problem of sliding mode control is disappear in this method.
This paper suggest an optimal identification method to complex and nonlinear system modeling that is based on Fuzzy-Neural Network(FNN). The FNN modeling implements parameter identification using HCM algorithm and optimal identification algorithm structure combined with two types of optimization theories for nonlinear systems, we use a HCM Clustering Algorithm to find initial parameters of membership function. The parameters such as parameters of membership functions, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted using optimal identification algorithm. The proposed optimal identification algorithm is carried out using both a genetic algorithm and the improved complex method. Also, an aggregate objective function(performance index) with weighted value is proposed to achieve a sound balance between approximation and generalization abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we use the time series data for gas furnace, the data of sewage treatment process and traffic route choice process.
Predicting RNA secondary structure as accurately as possible is very important in functional analysis of RNA molecules. However, different prediction methods and related parameters including terminal GU pair of helices, minimum length of helices, and free energy systems often give different prediction results for the same RNA sequence. Then, which structure is more important than the others? i.e. which combinations of the methods and related parameters are the optimal? In order to investigate above problems, first, three prediction methods, namely, random stacking of helical regions (RS), helical regions distribution (HD), and Zuker's minimum free energy algorithm (ZMFE) were compared by taking 1139 tRNA sequences from Rfam database as the samples with different combinations of parameters. The optimal parameters are derived. Second, Zuker's dynamic programming method for prediction of RNA secondary structure was revised using the above optimal parameters and related software BJRNAFold was developed. Third, the effects of short-range interaction were studied. The results indicated that the prediction accuracy would be improved much if proper short-range factor were introduced. But the optimal short-range factor was difficult to determine. A user-adjustable parameter for short-range factor was introduced in BJRNAFold software.
