  • This study focuses on the Mise-en-abyme theories of Lucien $D{\ddot{a}}llenbach$, and presents research methodology to analyze the modern cinema costume in a new view. Inherent aesthetic values of the costume code shown in the film are as follows. First, esthetics value shown is the analogic code through the maximization of factual realism by directing target. Mise-en-abyme placed in this film plays the role of costume codes, and highlights the subject by presenting specifically targeted realistic icons to maximize the realism of the movie. Second, Mise-en-abyme is deployed to the explicit text through costumes code is placed as Displaced code arrangements. In other words, each of the characters is a signifier. Symbolizing a historical era is the device that represents a self-reflective signifier. Third, paradoxically reflected by the overlapped expansion of virtual reality and the self-referential characteristics and are subject to reflect the thinking of the author. Costumes code placed in Mise-en-abyme is expressed in costumes positioned to maximize the realism in the film as described above, and implies narratives and self-reflective mediating tools that symbolism can be seen that the paradoxical metaphor for the reality and the future. In addition, through the metaphor of visual narrative is allegorical representation Mise-en-abyme with ambiguity, and it is a concrete text that can be realized in a variety of creative storytelling methods and image delivery methods of modern fashion. • A regression model with basin physiographic characteristics as independent variables was calibrated for regional flood frequency analysis. In case that high correlations existing among the independent variables the ridge regression has been known to have capability of overcoming the problems of multicollinearity. To optimize the ridge regression model the cost function including regularization parameter must be minimized. In this research the genetic algorithm was applied on this optimization problem. The genetic algorithm is a stochastic search method that mimic the metaphor of natural biological heredity. Using this method the regression model could have optimized and stable weights of variables.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide corpus-based quantitative analyses of HEART and HEAD in order to examine their actual usage status and to consider some cognitive linguistic aspects associated with their use. The two corpora COCA and COHA are used for analysis in this study. The analysis of COCA corpus reveals that the total frequency of HEAD is much higher than that of HEART, and that the figurative use of HEART (60%) is two times higher than its literal use (32%); by contrast, the figurative use of HEAD (41%) is a bit higher than its literal use (38%). Among all four genres, both lexemes occur most frequently in fictions and then in magazines. Over the past two centuries, the use of HEART has been steadily decreasing; by contrast, that the use of HEAD has been steadily increasing. It is assumed that the decreasing use of HEART has partially to do with the decrease in its figurative use and that the increasing use of HEAD is attributable to its diverse meanings, the increase of its lexical use, and the partial increase in its figurative use. The analysis of the collocation of verbs and adjectives preceding HEART and HEAD, as well the modifying and predicating forms of HEART and HEAD also provides some relevant information of the usage of the two lexemes. This paper showcases that the quantitative information helps understanding not only of the actual usage of the two lexemes but also of the cognitive forces working behind it.

  • Jambangee's advertisements in spring 1998 attracted public attention by the differentiating message of 'nationalism'. The purpose of this paper is to interpret Korean youth's culture of consumption, value, thought and culture expressed in these advertisements. The semiotic analytic method of F. Saussure and R. Barthe were used. Metaphor and metonymy as interpretive tools were used. Two levels of meaning, denotation and connotation were examined, and idelogies and mythologies were sought. Contrary to the most of jean advertisements which show youth, characteristic style, western life style and westernized beauty, refinement, materialism, and social differentiation, Jambangee's advertisement showed nationalism and patriotism. These advertisements criticized that preference of imported goods and ostentation of purchasing power brought crisis of economy and I.M.F. system. Jambangee's jeans symbolized as the meaning of nationalism and patriotism were suggested as a way to save our country. Jambangee's advertisements are meaningful. Because we had accepted western fashion passively so far, but for the first time Jambangee applied Korean design elements to jeans and gave new meanings to them through the 'nationalism'campaign.

  • Metaphor thinking is a kind of intuitive thinking and plays a central role in design process. But there are not many researches on this topic because it happens in designer's mind during design problem solving. In this paper, we considered cognitive aspects of metaphorical thinking as they cropped up in the process of design concepts development. As a method of cognitive experiment we used a protocol analysis of the design review reports. At the end of this research we concluded that metaphorical thinking is engaged in restructuring of new frames and reconciliation of conflicting frames for the development of new design ideas and concepts. This role of metaphorical thinking makes the design thinking divergent and the design process creative.

  • In this study, we explored science teachers' perceptions of adaptive practice in terms of importance and practice. For this purpose, an adaptive practice questionnaire was developed targeting secondary science teachers, and the responses of 128 science teachers were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows: First, the science teachers responded that all 17 items regarding adaptive practice were important. In particular, items related to 'addition of examples', 'adjustment of the level/range of concepts', and 'encouragement of student participation' showed high importance and performance levels. Second, the results of the IPA concerning adaptive practice showed that the items needing intensive improvement due to high importance but low performance were 'encouraging students' self-directed learning' and 'monitoring and responding to individual differences'. The science teachers identified a lack of time and uniform curriculum as the reasons for the low level of practice despite the high importance of these items. Third, regarding the IPA of the adaptive practice items, the items located in the fourth area, an excessive area, concerned 'pace control', 'modifying activities', and 'metaphor use'. More specifically, considering that 'metaphor use' was the only item with a higher level of performance than importance, it is necessary to reconsider whether problems are caused by excessive use. Fourth, analyzing the responses regarding the reasons for the difference in importance and performance revealed that the factors related to teachers included teachers' lack of knowledge or ability, and the tendency to implement as planned. As for student factors, an excessive number of students, differences in the levels of students, and a tendency to prefer classes centered on entrance exams were identified. As environmental factors, a uniform curriculum, conditions for experiments, evaluation systems, and external demands were mentioned. Finally, the implications of the results of this study for science education were discussed.
