A high sensitivity fiber optic temperature sensor based on a side-polished fiber (SPF) coupled to a tapered multimode overlay waveguide (MMOW) is proposed and studied. Both tapered and non-tapered MMOW were considered to study the effect of tapering of MMOW on the characteristics of the device and to investigate the criticality of the uniformity of the multimode overlay waveguide over the SPF. Present study shows that tapering of the MMOW can be used to tune the desired wavelength range without any loss in the sensitivity. Sensitivity up to 9 nm/$^{\circ}C$ within the temperature range of 25 to $100^{\circ}C$ can be achieved with the proposed sensor, almost 6 times higher compared even to state-of-the-art high-sensitivity grating-based fiber optic temperature sensors.
In this study, we have fabricated a fiber-optic radiation sensor using an organic scintillator and plastic optical fiber for brachytherapy dosimetry. Also, we have measured relative depth dose rates of Ir-192 source using a fiber-optic sensor and compared them with the results obtained using a conventional EBT film. Cerenkov lights which can be a noise in measuring scintillating light with a fiber-optic sensor are measured and eliminated by using of a background optical fiber. It is expected that a fiber-optic radiation sensor can be used in brachytherapy dosimetry due to its advantages such as a low cost, simple usage and a small volume.
In this paper, we implemented a polarimetric vibration sensor using a Sagnac birefringence interferometer composed of polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber(PM-PCF). By changing the amplitude and frequency of vibration applied to PM-PCF employed as the sensor head of the proposed sensor, sensor responses to various types of vibration were investigated. First, the vibration characteristic of the sensor was explored for a single frequency in a frequency range from 1 to 3000Hz with a cylindrical piezoelectric transducer, and then the sensor response to naturally damped vibration was examined by utilizing a metal cantilever. It was experimentally observed that the sensor output signal was deteriorated by more than 3dB at ~1900Hz in the single frequency vibration measurement with a minimum detectable strain perturbation of ${\sim}1.34n{\varepsilon}/Hz^{1/2}$ at 1500Hz and the peak value of the sensor output signal was proportional to the strength of initially applied stress in the naturally damped vibration measurement.
In this study, two different technologies which can measure temperature simultaneously at many points are introduced. One is to use a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel within a single cable. The other is to use an optic fiber with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The difference between two technologies can be summarized as follows. A thermal sensor cable has a concept of 'point sensing' that can measure temperature at accurate position of a thermal sensor. So the accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the ability of the thermal sensor. Whereas optic fiber sensor has a concept of 'distributed sensing' because temperature is measured by ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes component intensities of Raman backscatter that is generated when laser pulse travels along an optic fiber. It's resolution is determined by measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is that application targets of two temperature measurement techniques are checked in technical and economical phases by examining the strength and weakness of them. Considering the functions and characteristics of two techniques, the thermal sensor cable will be suitable to apply to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within 300m distance. It is expected that the optic fiber sensor can be widely utilized at various fields (for example: pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection, power line monitoring etc.) which need an information of temperature distribution over relatively long distance.
광섬유 TR-EFPI(total reflected extrtinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric) 센서가 빌딩, 교량, 항공기 등의 구조물의 변형률을 측정하기 위하여 개발되어졌다.
The measuring method of structural strain by a 3*3 passive-demodulated fiber optic interferometric sensor was developed to implement the real-time monitoring of structural status. A 3*3 fiber optic Michelson interferometric sensor was constructed to sense the value and the direction of structural strain. This sensor was applied on the cantilevered aluminum beam to experiment the sensing of the structural deformation. The digital signal processing was programmed by LabVIEW to determine the structural strain from the fiber optic signals. This program was verified by various simulated fiber optic signals. Finally, the structural was well determined by this developed program from real fiber optic signals.
In this paper, fiber optic sound and vibration monitoring sensor which is latticed shape structure based on Sagnac interferometer is fabricated and tested in laboratory conditions. To detect external vibrations surface mounted fibers on the latticed steel wire fence with a dimension of 170cm by 180cm is used. To detect external sound frequency the tightened fiber optic itself wire netting fence with a dimension of 50cm by 50cm is used. Experiments for the detection of the excited vibration and sound signals were performed. A small vibrator induced external vibration signal and it is applied to the latticed structure in the range of 100Hz to several kHz. External sound signal applied to the fiber optic sensor net using non-directional sound speaker. The detected optical signals were compared and analyzed to the detected both accelerometer and microphone signals in the time and frequency domain. Based on the experimental results, distributed fiber optic sensor using Sagnac interferometer detected effectively external vibration and sound signal and had a good performance. This system can be expanded to the monitoring of a significant system and to the structural health monitoring system.
In this study, a plastic fiber-optic temperature sensor is fabricated using TSCM(thermo sensitive clouding material) which changes its light transmittance with temperature and the characteristics of this sensor are evaluated. The fabricated fiber optic temperature sensor is the reflector type using a Y-coupler. The optimum light source and reflector are decided by measuring the amount of reflected light through TSCM. Also, the optimum distance from the end of sensor to the surface of reflector is determined. Then the relationship between the amount of measured reflected light and the temperature of TSCM is found.
