Development of Direct Extrusion Process on Al 1050 Condenser Tube by using Porthole Die (포트홀 다이를 이용한 Al1050 컨덴서 튜브의 직접압출공정 기술 개발)

  • Condenser tube which is used for a cooling system of automobiles is mainly manufactured by conform extrusion. However, direct extrusion using porthole die in comparison with conform extrusion has many advantages such as improvement of productivity, reduction of production cost etc. In general, the porthole die extrusion process is useful for manufacturing long tubes with hollow sections and consists of three stages(dividing, welding and forming stages). Especially, Porthole die for producing condenser tube is very complex. Thus, in order to obtain the detailed mechanics, to assist in the design of proper die shapes and sizes, and to improve the quality of products, porthole die extrusion should be analyzed in as non-steady state as possible. This paper describes FE analysis of non-steady state porthole die extrusion for producing condenser tube with multi-hole through 3D simulation in the non-steady state during the entire process to evaluate detailed metal flow, temperature distribution, welding pressure and extrusion load. Also to validate FE simulation of porthole die extrusion, a comparison of simulation and experiment results was presented in this paper.

Effect of extrusion on available energy and amino acid digestibility of barley, wheat, sorghum, and broken rice in growing pigs

  • Objective: The main objective of this study was to determine available energy and nutritional digestibility of extruded cereals and the effect of extrusion on the nutritional value of feed ingredients, aiming to provide scientific basis for efficient application of extrusion in the diets of growing pigs. Methods: In Exp. 1, 48 crossbred growing pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial body weight (BW) of 34.6±2.2 kg were selected and fed with eight diets (non-extrusion or extrusion) to determine the digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and nutrients digestibility. Eight diets included extruded grains (barley, wheat, sorghum, or broken rice), while four had unprocessed grains. In Exp. 2, 9 diets were formulated including 4 cereals with extrusion or non-extrusion and a N-free diet. In addition, 9 growing pigs (BW = 22.3±2.8 kg) were fitted with T-cannula in the distal ileum and arranged in a 9×6 Youden square design. Results: Results show that apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy, dry matter, organic meal, ether extract, neutral and acid detergent fiber was not affected by the extrusion process and there was no interaction between cereal type and extrusion treatment on DE, ME. However, the apparent total tract digestibility for crude protein (CP) increased markedly (p<0.05). The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of all amino acids (AA) except for leucine remarkably increased by extrusion (p<0.05). There was an interaction on the SID of arginine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, phenylalanine, cystine, and tyrosine in growing pigs between type of grain and extrusion treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Extrusion increased the ileal digestibility of CP and most AA in cereals, however, the DE and ME of cereals were not affected in growing pigs.

  • Recently, multi cell tube which is used for a cooling system of automobiles is mainly manufactured by the conform extrusion but this method is inferior as compared with direct extrusion in productivity per the unit time and in the equipment investment. Therefore, it is essential for the conversion of direct extrusion with porthole die. The direct extrusion with porthole die can produce multi cell tube which has the competitive power in costs and qualities compared with the existing conform extrusion. This study is designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load, tendency of mandrel deflection that is affected by variation of porthole shape in porthole die. Estimation is carried out using finite element method under the non-steady state. Also this study was examined into the cause of mandrel fracture through investigating elastic deformation of mandrel during the extrusion.

  • Mg-Cu composites were successively fabricated using a combination of rapid solidification and extrusion processes. In addition, the microstructural variation of the composite was investigated by performing the extrusion repeatedly. It resulted that the composite formed an uniform and dense structure by the extrusion, and the microstructure became fine as the extrusion conducted repeatedly. The microstructural variation was known to be dependent on the number of extrusion and the area reduction ratio. The tensile strength was also measured as a function of the microstructural variation.

  • A kinetic model of the cyclodextrin formation in a heterogeneous enzyme reaction system using swollen extrusion starch as substrate was derived emphasing the structural features of extrusion starch. The degree of gelatinization, the ratio of accessible and inaccessible portion of extrusion starch, adsorption of CGTase on swollen starch, the structural transformation during reaction, and product inhibition caused by produced CDs were considered in deriving kinetic model. Various kinetic constants were also evaluated. The derived kinetic equation was numerically simulated, which result showed that the derived kinetic equations can be used to predict the experimental data reasonably well under the various experimental conditions. Kinetic model can be utilized for the optimization of enzyme reactor and the process development for CD production from swollen extrusion starch.

  • This study presents development of an software for process and die design of hot extrusion through square dies. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore, most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement, intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop an software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The system also includes finite element simulation program. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with lead time and trial extrusion.

  • Porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming of hollow section tubes difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Because of the complicated structure of die assembly, extrusion process as a forming of hollow section tubes has been investigated experimentally Therefore, analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded Welding strength is affected by many parameters, which are such as extrusion ratio, extrusion speed, die shape, porthole number, bearing length, billet temperature and mandrel shape. In this paper, the parameters, which are such as billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness, are examined. The welding pressures are examined through 3D simulation of non steady state and compared with experimental results.

  • This paper presents development of finite element simulation program and analysis of hot extrusion through square dies with a mandrel. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than science. Die design for a new extrusion process is developed from through in-plant trials. In the present paper, a three-dimensional steady-state finite element simulation program is developed. Steady-state assumption is used for both the analyses of deformation and temperature. The developed program is effectively used to simulate hollow extrusion of several sections. Distributions of temperature effective strain rate, mean strain rate and mean stress are studied for an effective design of extrusion dies.

  • Magnesium alloys are being extensively used in weight-saving applications and as a potential replacement for plastics in electronic and computer applications. Magnesium alloy has some good characteristics, EMI shielding property and high specific strength. Nevertheless their high brittleness make it uneasy to process the magnesium. Magnesium alloys are extruded like aluminium alloys. The present work was done to find a characteristic of magnesium alloy(AZ31) changing the extrusion ratio 8.5, 19.1, 49 respectly and changing the die half angle $30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}$. Here this present done by the hydrostatic extrusion in the hot condition, $310^{\circ}$. The higher the extrusion ratio goes, the higher the extrusion force goes.
