  • The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a small diameter tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 4.57 mm, and length of 4 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $0^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$ . The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of C02 are highly dependent on the mass flux. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and friction pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • Recently, mechanical reliabilities including a drop test have been a hot issue. In this paper, solder balls with new components which are Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu-0.05N are introduced, and board level drop test for them are conducted under JEDEC standard in which the board with 15 flip chips is dropped as 1,500g acceleration during 0.5ms. The drop simulations are studied by using a implicit method in the ANSYS LS-DYNA, and modal analysis is made. Through both analyses, the solder balls with new components are evaluated under the drop. It is found that the maximum stress of each chip is occurred between the solder ball and the PCB, and the highest value among the maximum stresses in the chips is occurred on the chip nearest to fixed holes on the board in the drop tests and simulations.

  • Background: Excessive pronation of the feet can cause excessive inner rotation of the femur, followed by increased stress in the gluteus maximum, increased front slope of the pelvis, and lumbar lordosis, which leads to lumbar pain. The aim of the present study was to use the navicular drop test to examine foot pronation that can cause lumbar lordosis and to determine whether the navicular drop is lower in patients diagnosed with lumbar disc than in patients without this diagnosis. Methods: The Navicular Drop score was set by subtracting the navicular height at a standing position from the navicular height in a sitting position. The Navicular Drop measurements for college student with and without Lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc were compared using an independent t-test. Results: The control group were measured right $7.44{\pm}2.96$ and left $8.04{\pm}3.23$. The experimental group were measured right $2.12{\pm}1.33$ and left $2.80{\pm}1.29$. Therefore significant difference was found between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: The navicular drop affected lumbar herniated intervertebral disc.

  • Background: Foot drop is a common symptom in stroke patients. Tape applications are widely used to manage foot drop symptoms. Previous studies have evaluated the effects of static and dynamic balance and gait on foot drop using kinesiology tape; however, only few studies have used dynamic tape application in stroke patients with foot drop. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of dynamic taping, which facilitates the dorsiflexor muscle, on static and dynamic balance and gait speed in stroke patients with foot drop. Methods: The study included 34 voluntary patients (17 men, 17 women) with stroke. The patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 17), wherein dynamic taping was used to facilitate the dorsiflexor muscle, or the control group (n = 17), wherein kinesiology taping was used. Before the taping application, velocity average, path-length average, Berg balance scale, and timed up and go test (TUG) were recorded to measure static and dynamic balance, whereas the 10-meter walk test (10MWT) was used to measure gait speed. After the taping application, these parameters were re-evaluated in both groups. Repeated measure analysis of variance was used. Statistical significance levels were set to α = 0.05. Results: Except for the 10MWT scores in the control group, significant differences were noted in all the parameters measured for static and dynamic balance and gait speed between the pre and post-test (p < 0.05). However, the parameters showed significant interaction effects between group and time in the TUG and 10MWT (p < 0.01). Conclusion: These results indicate that compared with kinesiology taping, dynamic taping used in chronic stroke patients with foot drop had a more significant effect on dynamic balance and gait speed.

  • The fuel tank systems of fixed wing and rotary wing aircrafts require the self-sealing and crash-worthiness for their survivability. For these requirements, the flexible composite fuel tank is generally used. In this study, the drop and penetration performance of a fuel tank is investigated. The FE simulation includes the drop and penetration test of a fuel tank using MSC.DYTRAN. MSC.DYTRAN can provide the fluid-structure modeling of these test from Euler and Lagrange grids. Using MSC.DYTRAN, the finite modeling of the test cube of the flexible fuel tank and its FE simulation are performed for various environments. The simulation results can show if the test cube satisfies the performance requirements of the fuel tank.

  • The condensation pressure drop for R-22 and R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube was investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and coolant flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of 1220 mm length with horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes ranged from 450 to $1050\;kg/m^2{\cdot}s$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main experimental results were summarized as follows : In the case of two-phase flow, the pressure drop increases with increasing mass flux and decreasing quality. The pressure drop of R-22 is slightly higher than that of R-410A for the same mass flux. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed enormous deviations with experimental data.

  • This paper proposes a method in one-way layouts for longitudinal data with informative drop-out. When dropouts are informative, that is, correlated with unobserved data and/or the previous observed data, the simple imputation methods such as 'last observation carried forward' (LOCF) methods would arise the bias of the testing models. The maximum likelihood procedure combined with a logit model for the drop-out process is proposed to test treatment effects for one factorial designs and compared with LOCF method in two examples.

  • The characteristics about the pressure drop in microtubes have been investigated. The test tubes are the circular, seamless, stainless steel tubes with an inner diameter of 0.244, 0.430, and 0.792 mm, respectively. R-l34a was used as a test fluid. Early flow transition which has been reported in some previous studies is not found in single-phase flow pressure drop tests. The conventional theory between friction factor and Reynolds number predicted the experimental friction factors within an absolute average deviation of $8.9\%$. The two-phase flow pressure drop increases for higher quality and mass flux, and for reduced inner diameter. The existing correlations fail to predict the experimental data. A new correlation to predict the two-phase flow pressure drop is developed in the form of the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation. The effects of the tube diameter and the surface tension were considered, and the correlation predicted the experimental data within an average absolute deviation of $8.1\%$.

  • A reciprocating compressor used in domestic refrigerators can be subjected to many different forms of shock. These shocks are usually experienced during transporting the products from a manufacturer to customers. The hermetic structure of this kind of compressor makes it difficult to conduct drop tests for identifying the failure mechanism and their drop behaviors. The drop/impact simulation for a reciprocating compressor has been carried out with the explicit code LS-DYNA and its validation has been experimentally verified. Simulation results are in good agreement with those of drop test. The present method of drop/impact simulation provides an efficient and powerful solution to improve the design quality and reduce the design period.
