  • A mathematical model dealing with a prey-predator system with disease in the prey is considered. The functional response of the predator is governed by a Hoilling type-2 function. Mathematical analysis of the model regarding stability and persistence has been performed. The effect of delay and diffusion on the above system is studied. The role of diffusivity on stability and persistence criteria of the system has also been discussed.

  • Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS), which has the advantages of a substructure pseudo-dynamic test, is widely used to investigate the rate-dependent mechanical response of structures under earthquake excitation. However, time delay in RTHS can cause inaccurate results and experimental instabilities. Thus, this study proposes a model-based adaptive control strategy using a Kalman filter (KF) to minimize the time delay and improve RTHS stability and accuracy. In this method, the adaptive control strategy consists of three parts-a feedforward controller based on the discrete inverse model of a servohydraulic actuator and physical specimen, a parameter estimator using the KF, and a feedback controller. The KF with the feedforward controller can significantly reduce the variable time delay due to its fast convergence and high sensitivity to the error between the desired displacement and the measured one. The feedback control can remedy the residual time delay and minimize the method's dependence on the inverse model, thereby improving the robustness of the proposed control method. The tracking performance and parametric studies are conducted using the benchmark problem in RTHS. The results reveal that better tracking performance can be obtained, and the KF's initial settings have limited influence on the proposed strategy. Virtual RTHSs are conducted with linear and nonlinear physical substructures, respectively, and the results indicate brilliant tracking performance and superb robustness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the digital implementation of an optimal and robust VSS controller with sliding observer. Firstly, a discrete-time VSS control law which enables the system state to move into a sliding sector where the closed-loop system is stable is designed. Then optimal control theory is used to design an optimal sliding sector. Secondly, a sliding observer which provide robust state estimation against model-plant mismatches due to parameter uncertainties is designed for the sampled-data multivariable systems. Finally, modified sliding observer which effectively reduce chattering of state variables in state estimation was proposed. The proposed scheme was applied 10 a two degree of freedom inverted pendulum with passive joint to verify robust motion control. Computer simulation results confirm the viability of the proposed observer-based controller.

  • The necessity of estimating the time and cost required for tunnel construction has led to extensive research in this regard. Since geological conditions are significant factors in terms of time and cost of road tunnels, considering these conditions is crucial. Uncertainties about the geological conditions of a tunnel alignment cause difficulties in planning ahead of the required construction time and costs. In this paper, the continuous-space, discrete-state Markov process has been used to predict geological conditions. The Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation (MCS) method is employed to estimate the construction time and costs of a road tunnel project using the input data obtained from six tunneling expert questionnaires. In the first case, the input data obtained from each expert are individually considered and in the second case, they are simultaneously considered. Finally, a comparison of these two modes based on the technique presented in this article suggests considering views of several experts simultaneously to reduce uncertainties and ensure the results obtained for geological conditions and the construction time and costs.

  • A new analytic framework based on a linear algebra approach is proposed for examining the performance of a direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) slotted ALOHA wireless communication network systems with delay capture. The discrete-time Markov chain model has been introduced to account for the effect of randomized time of arrival (TOA) at the central receiver and determine the evolution of the finite population network performance in a single-hop environment. The proposed linear algebra approach applied to the given Markov problem requires only computing the eigenvector ${\prod}$ of the state transition matrix and then normalizing it to have the sum of its entries equal to 1. MATLAB computation results show that systems employing discrete TOA randomization and delay capture significantly improves throughput-delay performance and the employed analysis approach is quite easily and staightforwardly applicable to the current analysis problem.

  • This paper presents a decentralized adaptive scheme to stabilize a class of large-scale discrete-time linear systems subject to system parameter uncertainties. The scheme combines an adaptive nonlinear feedback control for compensating some effects by unknown system parameters and the exact model-based linear feedback control for overriding the unfavorable effects by interconnections. A condition of stability is derived, under which the overall adaptive system is assured to be globally stable. Also, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the feasibility of the scheme.

  • In this paper, a method of finite element analysis is presented for efficient calculation of vibration characteristics of not only simply interconnected structure with cyclic symmetry but also multiply interconnected structure with cyclic symmetry by using discrete Fourier trandform by means of a computer with small memory in a short time. Simply interconnected structure means it is composed of substructures which are adjacent themselves in circumferential direction. First, a mathematical model of multiply interconnected structure with cyclic symmetry is defined. The multiply interconnected structure is partitioned into substructures with the same goemetric configuration and constraint eqauations to be satisfied on connecting boundaries are defined. Nodal displacements and forces are transformed into complex forms through discrete Fourier transform and then finite element analysis is performed for just only a representative substructure. In free vibration analysis, natural frequencies of a whole structure can be obtained through a series of calculation for a substructure along the number of nodal diameter. And in forced vibration analysis, forced response of whole structure can be achieved by using inverse discrete Fourier transform of results which come from analysis for a substructure.
