  • In this paper, we introduce a case study of developing a miniature humanoid robot that has 16 degrees of freedom and is able to perform statically stable walking. The developed humanoid robot is 37cm tall and weighs 1,200g. RC servo motors are used as actuators. The robot can walk forward and turn to any direction on an even surface. It equipped with a small digital camera, so it can transmit vision data to a remote host computer via wireless modem. The robot can be operated in two modes: One is a remote-controlled mode, in which the robot behaves according to the command given by a human operator through the user-interface program running on a remote host computer, the other is a stand-alone mode, in which the robot behaves autonomously according the pre-programmed strategy. The user-interface program also contains a robot graphic simulator that is used to produce and verify the robot\`s gait motion. In our walking algorithm, the ankle joint is mainly used for balancing the robot. The experimental results shows that the developed robot can perform statically stable walking on an even surface.

  • This paper deals with the trajectory planning of IWR biped robot using genetic algorithm. The trajectory of a swing leg is generated by 5th order polynomial equation. Velocities and Acceleration properties on a viapoints are needed. These constants are given by heuristic method. The optimal values are determined by G.A to minimize the jerk of a trajectory. As a result, trajectory planning is implemented not on between two viapoints but on a whole interval. Efficient numerical calculation routines and walking algorithms for simulation are accomplished by MATLAB package.

  • An intelligent miniature humanoid robot system is designed and implemented as a platform for researching walking algorithm. The robot system consists of a mechanical robot body, a control system, a sensor system, and a human interface system. The robot has 6 dofs per leg, 3 dofs per arm, and 2 dofs for a neck, so it has total of 20 dofs to have dexterous motion capability. For the control system, a supervisory controller runs on a remote host computer to plan high level robot actions based on the vision sensor data, a main controller implemented with a DSP chip generates walking trajectories for the robot to perform the commanded action, and an auxiliary controller implemented with an FPGA chip controls 20 actuators. The robot has three types of sensors. A two-axis acceleration sensor and eight force sensing resistors for acquiring information on walking status of the robot, and a color CCD camera for acquiring information on the surroundings. As an example of an intelligent robot action, some experiments on playing soccer are performed.

  • This is a preliminary study is to make the robot walk more stably by observing the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) of the robot when the robot stands on one leg(single support) and then on two legs(double support) and so on. The robot consists of nine DOF (Degree of freedom) with lower part of the body. It is equipped with motor drivers and force sensors inside the robot. The motors are controlled by the external PC (Intel pentium 4). By the experimental results, it is found that the robot is unstable in the instant of changing from single support to double support or from double support to single support. We use the trajectory compensation of the angle and the length of both legs to realize more stable walking.

  • Humanoid robots have fascinated many researchers since they appeared decades ago. For the requirement of both accurate tracking control and the safety of physical human-robot interaction, torque control is basically desirable for humanoid robots. Humanoid robots are highly nonlinear, coupled, complex systems, accordingly the calculation of robot model is difficult and even impossible if precise model of the humanoid robots are unknown. Therefore, it is difficult to control using traditional model-based techniques. To realize model-free torque control, time-delay control (TDC) for humanoid robot was proposed with time-delay estimation technique. Using optimal walking trajectory obtained by particle swarm optimization, TDC with proposed scheme is implemented on whole body of a humanoid, not on biped legs even though it is performed by a virtual humanoid robot. The simulation results show the validity of the proposed TDC for humanoid robots.

  • In this paper, we describe the quadruped walking-control algorithm of the complete full-size humanoid DARPA Robotics Challenge-HUBO (DRC-HUBO) robot. Although DRC-HUBO is a biped robot, we require a quadruped walking function using two legs and two arms to overcome uneven terrains in the DRC. We design a wave-type quadruped walking pattern as a feedforward control using several walking parameters, and we design zero moment point (ZMP) controllers to maintain stable walking using an inverted pendulum model and an observed-state feedback control scheme. In particular, we propose a switching algorithm for ZMP controllers using supporting value and weighting factors in order to maintain the ZMP control performance during foot switching. Finally, we verify the proposed algorithm by performing quadruped walking experiments using DRC-HUBO.

  • Robot mobility and intelligence become more important for robots to be used in various fields other than automation. The main purpose of providing mobility to a robot is to extend the robot's manipulability. In this paper, we introduce a small humanoid robot that can autonomously play golf as an example of incorporating robot intelligence, mobility, and manipulability. The robot has 12 degrees of freedom for legs and has various basic walking patterns. It can move to a desired position and change orientation by combining the basic waking patterns. The robot has a color CCD camera and can extract coordinates of the objects in the environments. The small humanoid robot has 8 degrees of freedom for arms and can play golf autonomously with two kinds of dexterous swing motions. Kinematic analysis of the robot arms, vision data processing for the recognition of the environments, algorithm for playing robotic golf have been performed or proposed. The experimental results show that the robot can play golf autonomously.

  • This paper concerns the use of support vector regression (SVR), which is based on the kernel method for learning from examples, in identification of walking robots. To handle complex dynamics in humanoid robot and realize stable walking, this paper develops and implements two types of reference natural motions for a humanoid, namely, walking trajectories on a flat floor and on an ascending slope. Next, SVR is applied to model stable walking motions by considering these actual motions. Three kinds of kernels, namely, linear, polynomial, and radial basis function (RBF), are considered, and the results from these kernels are compared and evaluated. The results show that the SVR approach works well, and SVR with the RBF kernel function provides the best performance. Plus, it can be effectively applied to model and control a practical biped walking robot.
