  • This paper is concerned with computer simulations of a biped robot walking in static and dynamic gaits. To this end, a three-dimensional robot is considered possessing a torso and two identical legs of a typical design. For such limbs, a set of inverse kinematic solutions is analytically derived between the torso and the feet. Specific walking patterns are off-line generated meeting stability based on the VPCG or ZMP condition. Subsequently, to verify whether the robot can walk as planned in the presence of mass and ground effects, a multi-body dynamics CAE code has been applied to the resulting joint motions determined by inverse kinematics. As a result, the key parameters to successful gaits could be identified including inherent characteristics as well. Upon comparisons between the two types of gaits, dynamic gaits are concluded more desirable for larger humaniods.

  • A neural network(NN) mechanism is proposed to modify the gait of a biped robot that walks on sloping surface using sensory inputs. The robot starts walking on a surface with no priori knowledge of the inclination of the surface. By accumulating experience during walking, the robot improves its walking gait and finally forms a gait that is adapted to the surface inclination. A neural controller is proposed to control the gait which has 72 reciprocally inhibited and excited neurons. PI control is used for position control, and the neurons are trained by a reinforcement learning mechanism. Experiments of static gait learning and pseudo dynamic learning are performed to show the validity of the proposed reinforcement learning mechanism.

  • Human has various types of emotions which affect speculation, judgement, activity, and the like at the moment. Specifically, walking is also affected by emotions, because one's emotion status can be easily inferred by his or her walking style. The present research on biped walking with humanoid robots is mainly focused on stable walking irrespective of ground condition. For effective human-robot interaction, however, walking pattern needs to be changed depending on the emotion status of the robot. This paper provides analysis and comparison of gait experiment data for the men and women in four representative emotion states, i.e., joy, sorrow, ease, and anger, which was acquired by a gait analysis system. The data and analysis results provided in this paper will be referenced to emotional biped walking of a humanoid robot.

  • If a biped humanoid robot walks stably on even and uneven planes like a human being, it should have a control system capable of compensating for moments generated by motions of its lower-limbs, upper-limbs and head. In this paper, a compensatory motion control method is described for the stability of biped humanoid robots. This control method calculates the combined motion of the trunk and the waist that cancels the generated moments by using an iteration algorithm. During the biped walking, the combined motion is employed only for stability while the motion of the lower-limbs is used only for locomotion. This method is useful for not only a steady walking but also a transient walking. The e...

  • This paper is concerned with the generation of a balancing trajectory for improving the walking performance. The balancing motion has been determined by solving a second -order differential equation. However, this method caused some difficulties in linearizing and approximating the equation and had restrictions on using various balancing trajectories. The proposed difficulties in linearizing and approximating the equation and had restrictions on using various balancing trajectories. The proposed method i this paper is based on the genetic algorithm for minimizing the motins of balancing joints, whose trajectories are generated by the fifth-order polynomial interpolation after planning leg trajectories. The real walking experiments are made on the biped robot IWR-III, developed by our Automatic Control Laboratory. The system has 8 degrees of freedom and the structure of three pitches in each leg, and one roll and one prismatic joint in the balancing joints. The experimental result shows the validity and applicability of the new proposed algorithm.

  • This paper is concerned with walking trajectory generation by applying the genetic algorithm. The walking trajectory is generated though three via-points and genetic algorithm is employed to find velocity and acceleration at each via-point. Also genetic algorithm is applied for balancing joint trajectory. Fitness function is used for minimizing the trajectory. As a result, new algorithm generated the smooth trajectory. The proposed algorithm is verified by the experiment of biped walking robot developed in our Control laboratory, and we compared the result with the previous walking algorithm. It showed that the new proposed algorithm generated the better walking trajectory.

  • This paper deals with the biped robot gait on changing the initial postures. Gait of a biped robot depends on the constraints of mechanical kinematics and initial posture. Also biped robot's dynamic walking stability is investigated by ZMP(Zero Moment Point). The path trajectory. with the knee joint bent like a human, is generated and applied with the above considerations. To decrease trajectory tracking error, in this paper, a new initial posture similar to bird's case is proposed and realized with the real robot.

  • In this paper, a bird type biped robot for entertainment controlled by R/C servo motors, is built using the embedded RTOS (Real Time Operating System). ${\mu}C/OS-II$ V2.00 is used fur RTOS and the board 80C196KC for main CPU. A control algorithm of R/C servo motors is proposed on ${\mu}C/OS-II's$ preemptive and deterministic property without any extra PWM module. The realized biped robot has 19DOF, that is, 12DOF for both legs, 6DOF for both arms and 1DOF for neck. To verify the proper walking process, ZMP(Zero Moment Point) theory is applied and the simulation has been done by ADAMS.

  • In this paper, a simple method of angle velocity estimation is presented for a passive dynamic biped robot. The estimation problem is not an easy task because its dynamic model is a hybrid system involved with an impact condition. Instead of designing a complex observer for hybrid systems we simply utilize the impact condition to reset the initial condition of the high-pass filter when the non-support leg hits the slope. The approach has been verified by simulation results.

  • This paper presents the impact minimization of a biped robot by using genetic algorithm. In case we want to accomplish the designed plan under the special environments, a robot will be required to have walking capability and patterns with legs, which are in a similar manner as the gaits of insects, dogs and human beings. In order to walk more effectively, studies of mobile robot movement are needed. To generate optimal motion for a biped robot, we employ genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithm is searching for technology that can look for solution from the whole district, and it is possible to search optimal solution from a fitness function that needs not to solve differential equation. In this paper, we generate trajectories of gait and trunk motion by using genetic algorithm. Using genetic algorithm not only on gait trajectory but also on trunk motion trajectory, we can obtain the smoothly stable motion of robot that has the least impact during the walk. All of the suggested motions of biped robot are investigated by simulations and verified through the real implementation.
