  • The loss of composite action at the hogging moment zone for a continuous composite girder reduces the girder stiffness and strength. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the use of an ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) slab at the hogging moment zone and a normal concrete (NC) slab at the sagging moment zone. The testing was conducted to verify the level of loading at which composite action is maintained at the hogging moment zone. Four two-span continuous composite girders were tested. The thickness of the UHPC varied between a half and a full depth of slab. The degree of shear connection at the hogging moment zone varied between full and partial. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the UHPC slab to enhance the girder stiffness and maintain the composite action at the hogging moment zone at a load level much higher than the upper service load limit. To a lesser degree enhanced performance was also noted for the smaller thickness of the UHPC slab and partial shear connection at the hogging moment zone. Plastic analysis was conducted to evaluate the ultimate capacity of the girder which yielded a conservative estimation. Finite element (FE) modeling evaluated the girder performance numerically and yielded satisfactory results. The results indicated that composite action at the hogging moment zone is maintained for the degree of shear connection taken as 50% of the full composite action and use of UHPC as half depth of slab thickness.

  • This survey was conducted to collect basic data about the effect of buffering zone installation in weaned pig house. Buffering zone was installed either inside or outside of pig house to compare changes of temperature, humidity and air velocity of pig room. The body weight and mortality of weaned pigs in house with buffering zone was also measured. There was no difference in temperature, humidity and air velocity between inside and outside buffering zone. Mortality of weaned pig in house with buffering zone was drastically decreased compare to pigs in house without buffering zone that could be useful to maintain constant temperature and decrease mortality.

  • Effects of friction stir welding parameters such as tool rotation speed and welding speed on the joints properties of 5052 Al alloys were studied in this study. A wide range of friction stir welding conditions could be applied to join 5052 AA alloy without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with a lower heat input. Microstructures near the weld zone showed general weld structures such as stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ). Each zone showed the dynamically recrystallized grain, transient grain and structure similar to base metal's, respectively. Hardness distribution near the weld zone represented a similar value of the base metal under wide welding conditions. However, in case of 800 rpm of tool rotation speed, hardness of the stir zone had a higher value due to the fine grain with lots of dislocation tangle, a higher angle grain boundary and some of Al3Fe particles. Except joints with weld defects, tensile strength and elongation of the joints had values similar to the base metal values and fracture always occurred in the regions approximately 5mm away from the weld center.

  • Laboratory scale study for an area of influence and flowing aspect of groundwater saturated zone was conducted for three sediment grains. On the AMG(Average Modal diameter Grains) 0.34, 1.38, 3.89mm diameter samples, the affected area of the aquifer were 15.2, 37.0, 30.0%/m2 each. Air flow for AMG 0.34mm diameter grain size provides indication of pattern of channelized air flow in saturated zone and expansion state in above saturated zone. For AMG of 1.38, 3.89mm diameter grains, air flow are pervasive air flow, forming a symmetrical cone of influence around the injection point. And also AMG 1.38, 3.89mm diameter samples show onset of collapse and approach to steady state in above saturated zone, respectively. In this study, optimal sites for in situ air sparging, may be grain diameters between about AMC 1.5~2.5mm diameter.

  • A physical model experiment with GPR and 3-D resisitivity survey were conducted to investigate the geoelectrical response of hydrocarbon-impacted zone, so called smeared zone, on the geophysical data. The results from the experiment show that GPR signals were enhanced when LNAPL was present as a residual saturation in the water saturated system (${\varepsilon}_r$ = 21) due to less attenuation of the electromagnetic energy through the medium, compared to when the medium was saturated with only water (${\varepsilon}_r$ = 21). 3-D resistivity data obtained from the former gas station site demonstrate that the highly contaminated zones could be imaged with low resistivities attributed to the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons at the aged, hydrocarbon-impacted sites. The study results also show that the geophysical methods, as a non-invasive sounding technique, can be a very useful tool for mapping hydrocarbon-contaminated zones.

  • Parametric study on the efficiency of Rotary Solid Dehumidifer are reported. Experi-ments have been performed by varying regeneration temperature, regeneration humidity, flow rate of regeneration air, angular velocity of dehumidifer rotor and regeneration angle. To improve the energy efficiency, MODE 2,3 where coding zone is constructed and MODE 4, 5 where recirculating zone is constructed, were studied through experimental method $\ldots$. These results show that economical operating ranges exist in regeneration temperature, flow rate of regeneration air, angular velocity of dehumidifier rotor and regeneration angle. MODE 2,3 where cooling zone is constructed between regeneration Bone and process zone, is far better than MODE 1 in view of energy effiency, and optimum cooling angle and flow rate of cooling air exist. But MODE 4 and MODE 5, where recirculating zone is constructed, are similar to MODE 1.

  • In this study, we have researched the optimum design method of the lenticular lens sheet for 3D displays on a TFT-LCD panel, to offer a more stable stereoscopic image, improved 3D quality, and a wider viewing zone. Especially, we have defined the viewing zone width (a parameter denoted as Z) to apply it to the optimum design. The results of this new design method have been compared with the existing design method. As a result, it is revealed that the proposed design method improves the stereoscopic image quality by reducing the black matrix zone width.

  • To determine if fish density, biomass, species richness, and species diversity were greater in ecotone than the stream and littoral zones, I sampled fish monthly in the Ledbetter Creek through Ledbetter Creek Embayment in Kentucky Lake, Kentucky, from April to October 1996 by using throw traps. During the first four months (daytime only) fish density did not vary significantly among zones or among months. However, there were significant differences among zones during the last three months and the stream zone had significantly higher mean fish density than both the littoral zone and the ecotone. Fish biomass also differed significantly among zones during the last three months. The stream zone had the highest mean fish biomass among zones, significantly higher than the ecotone, but not different than the littoral zone. There were no statistically significant differences among zones during the first four months, but mean fish biomass in the stream zone was about eight times higher than the ecotone, The stream zone had the highest fish species richness among zones. Differences were significant among zones during the last three months, and the stream zone (0.98 $\pm$ 0.04) had significantly greater mean fish species richness than the ecotone (0.45 $\pm$ 0.01), but not significantly than the littoral zone (0.56 $\pm$ 0.17). Fish species richness differed significantly among months during the first four months, Monthly species diversities ranged from 0.62 to 1.96 in the stream zone, 0 to a.57 in the ecotone, and 0 to 2.60 in the littoral zone. Combined species diversities in the stream, the ecotone , and the littoral zones were 2.72, 3.58, and 3.10, respectively, There were five families of fishes captured frequently enough for their individual numbers to comprise at least 8 % of the total. Family rankings in the stream zone were opposite of the littoral zone. Percidae was the most abundant family and Clupeidae was absent in the stream zone, whereas Percidae was uncommon and Clupeidae was the most abundant family in the littoral zone. Atherinidae was dominant in the ecotone. Five of the most abundant species comprised 65 % of the total number. The guardian darter occurred only in the stream zone, and it was consistently found in riffles. Longear sunfish and central stoneroller also had significant differences of mean fish densities among zones, and they were found mostly in the stream zone. Threadfin shad and bullhead minnow were almost exclusively caught in the littoral zone. I finally concluded that the ecotone between the stream and the littoral zone in this small-scale freshwater aquatic ecosystem was not as productive as the ones in other ecosystems.

  • Milyang pyrophyllite deposit which was formed by hydrothermal alteration occurs in Late Cretaceous andesitic tuff in the Milyang area, Gyeongsangnamdo. The wall rock alteration and genesis of the Milyang pyrophyllite deposit were studied. The ore minerals are composed dominantly of pyrophyllite accompanied by small amounts of quartz, kaolinite, pyrite, dumortierite and diaspore. The alteration halo of this deposit can be divided into three zones on the basis of mineral assemblage; pyrophyllite, sericite and chlorite zone. The common mineral assemblages of each alteration zone are as follows: (1) pyrophyllite zone; pyrophyllite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite-dumortierite-diaspore, (2) sericite zone; sericite-quartz-pyrite-kaolinite, and (3) chlorite zone; chlorite-plagioclase-quartz. Major element chemistry shows that characteristic depletion in MgO, CaO, and $Na_2O$ and relative increase in FeO from less altered chlorite zone to extensively altered pyrophyllite zone corresponding to variation in mineral assemblages. The paragenesis of ore minerals, oxygen isotope data, chlorite and illite geothermometry suggest that ore deposit was formed at about $250{\sim}330^{\circ}C$. Both hydrogen and silica activities are high in pyrophyllite zone. Potassium activity increases in sericite zone while hydrogen activity becomes low in chlorite zone. The pyrophyllite zone was formed relatively higher temperature than those of sericite and chlorite zones. The ore fluid was considered to be magmatic water in origin derived from the residual granitic magma which interacted with meteoric water.
