  • Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are widely used as surge protectors for commnuication applications due to their small internal capacitance. In these days, however, they are mostly used in combined configurations, because the activation voltage required to initiate the discharge process in the GDTs for sufficient amount of time can be large enough to damage surge-sensitive protected circuits. For GDTs with a considerably high initial over-voltage value, we should limit the peak voltage using a TVS or filter. As for ZnO varistors, even though their performance for voltage restriction is excellent, their applications in high-frequency commnuication circuits have been limited because of higher internal capacitance when compared to the GDTs. In order to develop a surge protector for commnuication applications by taking advantages of these two devices, we built a combination circuit that connects a GDT and a ZnO varistor along with a choke coil in common and differential modes. We describe how the applied SPDs operate in protection process steps with the actual data obtained from the residual voltage measurements at each step. The experiment results show that the surge voltage restriction with the choke coil is more effective in 100 [kHz] RingWave voltage than in lightning impulse voltage.

Effect of Low-Temperature Sintering on Electrical Properties and Aging Behavior of ZVMNBCD Varistor Ceramics

  • This paper focuses on the electrical properties and stability against DC accelerated aging stress of ZnO-V2O5-MnO2-Nb2O5-Bi2O3-Co3O4-Dy2O3 (ZVMNBCD) varistor ceramics sintered at 850 - 925 ℃. With the increase of sintering temperature, the average grain size increases from 4.4 to 11.8 mm, and the density of the sintered pellets decreases from 5.53 to 5.40 g/㎤ due to the volatility of V2O5, which has a low melting point. The breakdown field abruptly decreases from 8016 to 1,715 V/cm with the increase of the sintering temperature. The maximum non-ohmic coefficient (59) is obtained when the sample is sintered at 875 ℃. The samples sintered at below 900 ℃ exhibit a relatively low leakage current, less than 60 mA/㎠. The apparent dielectric constant increases due to the increase of the average grain size with the increase of the sintering temperature. The change tendency of dissipation factor at 1 kHz according to the sintering temperature coincides with the tendency of the leakage current. In terms of stability, the samples sintered at 900 ℃ exhibit both high non-ohmic coefficient (45) and excellent stability, 0.8% in 𝚫EB/EB and -0.7 % in 𝚫α/α after application of DC accelerated aging stress (0.85 EB/85 ℃/24 h).

Microstructure and Varistor Properties of ZVMND Ceramics with Sintering Temperature

  • The sintering effect on the microstructure, electrical properties, and dielectric characteristics of ZnO-V2O5-MnO2-Nb2O5-Dy2O3-based ceramics was investigated. With the increase of sintering temperature from 875 to 950℃, the density of the sintered pellets decreased from 5.57 to 5.45 g/cm3 and the average grain size increased from 4.3 to 10.9 μm. The breakdown field decreased noticeably from 6,095 to 996 V/cm with the increase of sintering temperature. The varistor ceramics sintered at 900℃ exhibited the best nonlinear properties: 39.2 in the nonlinear coefficient and 0.24 mA/cm2 in the leakage current density. The dielectric constant increased sharply from 658.6 to 2,928.8 with the increase of sintering temperature. On the whole, the dissipation factor exhibited a fluctuation with the increase of the sintering temperature, and a minimum value of 0.284 at 900℃.

Glass 첨가량에 따른 ZnO 바리스터의 전기적 특성 (Electrical Properties of ZnO Varistors with Variation of Glass Addition)

  • ZnO varistor ceramics were fabricated with variation of addition of glass-frit amount and the sintering temperature was $1100^{\circ}C$. The average grain sizes were showed increased from $8.6{\mu}m\;to\;10{\mu}m$, and varistor voltages were decreased from 506V to 460V by added amount of glass-frit. Nonlinear coefficient $\alpha$, of all were with increasing the amount of glass-frit more than 70, in case of added on $0.03wt\%$ glass-frit was 83. And leakage current were less than $1{\mu}A$ with applied at $82\%$ of varistor voltage. The clamping voltage ratio of the specimens added $0.03wt\%$ glass-frit was 1.41 at applied 25A $[8/20\;{\mu}s]$. In the specimen added $0.03wt\%$ glass-frit, endurance of surge current and deviation of varistor voltage were $6200A/cm^2,\;\Delta-1.67\%$, respectively and clamping voltage ratio was 2.33. In the Specimen added $0.03wt\%$ glass-frit were superior to any other compositions on High Temperature Load Test(HTLT) for 1000 hr at $85^{\circ}C$, and deviation of the varistor voltage were $\Delta-1.29\%$.

  • This paper presents Pspice modeling methods for spark gaps and ZnO varistors and describes the application for the two-stage surge suppression circuit which was composed of the nonlinear components. The simulation modelings of nonlinear components were conducted on the basis of the voltage and current curves measured by the impulse current with the time-to-crest of $1~50 \mus$ and the impulse voltage with the rate of the time-to-crest of 10, 100 and 1000 V/\mus$. The firing voltages of the spark gap increased with increasing the rate of the time-to-crest of impulse voltage and the measured data were in good agreement with the simulated data. The I-V curves of the ZnO varistor were measured by applying the impulse currents of which time-to-crests range from 1 to $50 \mus$ and peak amplitudes from 10 A to 2 kA. The simulation modeling was based on the I-V curves replotted by taking away the inductive effects of the test circuit and leads. The meximum difference between the measured and calculated data was of the order of 3%. Also the two-stage surge suppression circuit made of the spark gap and the ZnO varistor was investigated with the impulse voltage of $10/1000\mus$$mutextrm{s}$ wave shape. The overall agreement between the theoretical and experimental results seems to be acceptable. As a consequence, it was known that the proposed simulation techniques could effectively be used to design the surge suppression circuits combined with nonlinear components.

  • The microstructure, V-Ι characteristics, and stability of ZnO-P $r_{6}$ $O_{11}$ CoO-C $r_2$ $O_3$- $Y_2$ $O_3$-based varistor ceramics were investigated with cooling rate in the range of 2~8$^{\circ}C$/min. The cooling rate relatively weakly affected the microstructure, the varistor voltage, and the leakage current in the V-Ι characteristics. But the nonlinear exponent relatively strongly affected by cooling rate. The cooling rate also greatly affected the stability of V-Ιand dielectric characteristics for DC accelerated aging stress. On the whole, the varistors cooled with 4$^{\circ}C$/fin exhibited the highest performance in the densification, nonlinearity, and stability. Especially, they exhibited a high stability, in which the variation rate of the varistor voltage( $V_{1㎃}$), the nonlinear exponent($\alpha$), and the dissipation factor(tan $\delta$) is -1.4%, -4.9%, and +60.0%, respectively, under DC accelerated aging stress such as 0.95 $V_{1㎃}$15$0^{\circ}C$/12 h)

  • Since 1970s, varistors using metal-oxide resistors have been applied to Gapless surge arresters for power system. In the paper, the structure of metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for 362kV GIS which is developed the first in korea has been introduced. And the main evaluation items for the metal-oxide resistors which are reference voltage test, residual voltage test, long duration current impulse withstand test and operating duty test is tested and evaluated.

  • High speed DC circuit breakers (HSCB) are indispensable for protection of DC electric subway substations from fault current. However, the HSCB has mechanical contact to wear, which requires rather frequent maintenance, we have succeeded in developing and manufacturing a GTO DC circuit breaker using GTOs and ZnO varistors. In this paper, we describes the outline of the system itself, its characteristics and test data.
