Pure ZnO and ZnO nanowires doped with 3 wt.% Ga (‘3GZO’) were grown by pulsed laser deposition in a furnace system. The doping of Ga in ZnO nanowires was analyzed by observing the optical and chemical properties of the doped nanowires. The diameter and length of nanowires were under 200 nm and several ${\mu}m$, respectively. Changes of significant resistance were observed and the sensitivities of ZnO and 3GZO nanowires were compared. The sensitivities of ZnO and 3GZO nanowire sensors measured at 300℃ for 1 ppm of ethanol gas were 97% and 48%, respectively.

We have fabricated $SnO_2$/Zn core-shell nanowires by employing a sputtering technique with a Zn target. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the surface of the nanowires became rougher by the coating. X-ray diffraction of the coated nanowires exhibited the hexagonal Zn diffraction peaks. TEM image of coated structures showed that shell layer was mainly comprised of hexagonal Zn phase. EDX spectra suggested that the shell layer consisted of Zn elements. The photoluminescence spectrum of the coated nanowires in conjunction with Gaussian fitting analysis revealed that the emission was disconvoluted with three Gaussian functions, which are centered at 2.1 eV in the yellow region, 2.4 eV in the green region, and 3.3 eV in the ultraviolet region. We speculated the possible mechanisms of these emission peaks.
1-D ZnO nanowires have been attractive for their peculiar properties and easy growth at relatively low temperature. The length, diameter, and density of ZnO nanowires were determined by the several synthetic parameters, such as PEI concentration, growth time, temperature, and zinc salt concentration. The ZnO nanowires were grown on the <001> oriented seed layer using the hydrothermal process with zinc nitrate and HMTA (hexamethylenetetramine) and their structure and optical properties were characterized. The morphology, length and diameter of the nanowires were strongly affected by the relative and/or absolute concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ and $OH^{-1}$ and the hydrothermal temperature. When the concentrations of the zinc nitrate HMTA were the same as 0.015 M, the length and diameter of the nanowires were $1.97{\mu}m$ and $0.07{\mu}m$, respectively, and the aspect ratio was 28.1 with the preferred orientation along the <001> direction. XRD and TEM results showed a high crystallinity of the ZnO nanowires. Optical measurement revealed that ZnO nanowires emitted intensive stimulated UV at 376 nm without showing visible emission related to oxygen defects.
Mg-doped ZnO one-dimensional (1D) nanostrutures were synthesized by using a thermal evaporation technique. The morphology, crystal structure, and sensing properties of the Mg-doped ZnO nanostructures functionalized with Pt to CO gas at $100^{\circ}C$ were examined. The diameters of the 1D nanostructures ranged from 80 to 120 nm and that the lengths were up to a few tens of micrometers. The gas sensors fabricated from multiple networked Mg-doped ZnO nanowires functionalized with Pt showed enhanced electrical response to CO gas. The responses of the nanowires were improved by approximately 70, 69, 111, and 81 times at CO concentrations of 10, 25, 50, and 100 ppm, respectively. Both the response and recovery times of the nanowire sensor for CO gas sensing were not nearly changed by Pt functionalization. It also appeared that the Mg doping concentration did not influence the sensing properties of ZnO nanowires as strongly as Pt-functionalization. In addition, the mechanism for the enhancement in the CO gas sensing properties of Mg-doped ZnO nanowires by Pt functionalization is discussed.

Pure ZnO, ZnO nanowires doped with 3 wt.% Ga (3GZO) and doped with 3 wt.% Ag (3SZO) were grown by a hot-walled pulse laser deposition (HW-PLD) technique. The optical and chemical properties of Ga and Ag doped nanowires was analyzed. Nanowires were determined to be under 200 nm in diameter and several μm in length. Change of significant resistance was observed and the gas detection sensitivities of ZnO, 3GZO and 3SZO nanawires were compared. The sensitivities of ZnO, 3GZO, and 3SZO nanowire sensors were measured at 300℃ for 1 ppm of ethanol gas at 97%, 48%, and 203%, respectively.
Amorphous $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes have been fabricated by utilizing the ZnO nanowires as template with wet etching method. ZnO nanowires synthesized by thermal evaporation are conformally coated with $Al_2O_3$ by atomic-layer deposition(ALD) method. The $Al_2O_3$-coated ZnO nanowires are of core-shell structure; ZnO core nanowires and $Al_2O_3$ shells. When the $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ core-shell structure is dipped in $H_3PO_4$ solution at $25^{\circ}C$ for a 6 min, the core ZnO materials are completely etched, and only $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes are remained. This nanotube fabrication is technically easier than others, and simply approachable. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes have various thicknesses that can be controlled.
We have investigated the sensing properties of ethanol gas sensor with pure ZnO and Ga-doped ZnO nanowires on Au coated (0001) sapphire substrates grown by hot walled pulsed laser deposition. Randomly aligned ZnO nanowires arrays were grown on a Au-electrode patterned under ambient conditions. ZnO nanowires have various sizes and shapes with a different substrate position inside a furnace. The average of length and diameter of the ZnO nanowires were $8\;{\mu}m$ and 100 nm respectively, and confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity chanege characterization of the gas sensor was found that measured sensitivities of the ethanol gas sensors were 83.3% and 68.3% at $300^{\circ}C$ respectively.

Electrochromic (EC) devices are capable of reversibly changing their optical properties upon charge injection and extraction induced by the external voltage. The characteristics of the EC device, such as low power consumption, high coloration efficiency, and memory effects under open circuit status, make them suitable for use in a variety of applications including smart windows and electronic papers. Coloration due to reduction or oxidation of redox chromophores can be used for EC devices (e-paper), but the switching time is slow (second level). Recently, with increasing demand for the low cost, lightweight flat panel display with paper-like readability (electronic paper), an EC display technology based on dye-modified $TiO_2$ nanoparticle electrode was developed. A well known organic dye molecule, viologen, was adsorbed on the surface of a mesoporous $TiO_2$ nanoparticle film to form the EC electrode. On the other hand, ZnO is a wide bandgap II-VI semiconductor which has been applied in many fields such as UV lasers, field effect transistors and transparent conductors. The bandgap of the bulk ZnO is about 3.37 eV, which is close to that of the $TiO_2$ (3.4 eV). As a traditional transparent conductor, ZnO has excellent electron transport properties, even in ZnO nanoparticle films. In the past few years, one-dimension (1D) nanostructures of ZnO have attracted extensive research interest. In particular, 1D ZnO nanowires renders much better electron transportation capability by providing a direct conduction path for electron transport and greatly reducing the number of grain boundaries. These unique advantages make ZnO nanowires a promising matrix electrode for EC dye molecule loading. ZnO nanowires grow vertically from the substrate and form a dense array (Fig. 1). The ZnO nanowires show regular hexagonal cross section and the average diameter of the ZnO nanowires is about 100 nm. The cross-section image of the ZnO nanowires array (Fig. 1) indicates that the length of the ZnO nanowires is about $6\;{\mu}m$. From one on/off cycle of the ZnO EC cell (Fig. 2). We can see that, the switching time of a ZnO nanowire electrode EC cell with an active area of $1\;{\times}\;1\;cm^2$ is 170 ms and 142 ms for coloration and bleaching, respectively. The coloration and bleaching time is faster compared to the $TiO_2$ mesoporous EC devices with both coloration and bleaching time of about 250 ms for a device with an active area of $2.5\;cm^2$. With further optimization, it is possible that the response time can reach ten(s) of millisecond, i.e. capable of displaying video. Fig. 3 shows a prototype with two different transmittance states. It can be seen that good contrast was obtained. The retention was at least a few hours for these prototypes. Being an oxide, ZnO is oxidation resistant, i.e. it is more durable for field emission cathode. ZnO nanotetropods were also applied to realize the first prototype triode field emission device, making use of scattered surface-conduction electrons for field emission (Fig. 4). The device has a high efficiency (field emitted electron to total electron ratio) of about 60%. With this high efficiency, we were able to fabricate some prototype displays (Fig. 5 showing some alphanumerical symbols). ZnO tetrapods have four legs, which guarantees that there is one leg always pointing upward, even using screen printing method to fabricate the cathode.
The influence of annealing process in an $O_2$ atmosphere on the photoluminescence (PL) spectra properties of ZnS nanowires has been investigated. ZnS nanowires with the diameters approximately 100 nm and the lengths a few tens micrometers were synthesized by evaporating ZnS powders on Si substrates while using an Au thin film as a catalyst. ZnS nanowires had an NBE emission band at 430 nm in the violet region. The emission intensity was improved drastically by a process in which ZnS nanowires were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ in an $O_2$ atmosphere for 45 minutes.
${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis was used to functionalize networked ZnO nanowires with Au nanoparticles. The networked ZnO nanowires were prepared through a vapor phase selective growth method. The sensing performances of the Au-functionalized ZnO nanowires were investigated in terms of $NO_2$, CO and benzene gases. The Au-funtionalized ZnO nanowire sensors showed an applicable, reliable capability to detect the gases, indicating their potential in chemical gas sensors.
