  • With varying rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature, luminescent properties of ZnMgS:Mn thin film sputter-deposited with one target were measured. Although all samples have the same composition, $Zn_{1-x}Mg_xS:Mn$ (x=0.25) can emit luminescence between 580 and 614 nm, which is controlled by only RTA temperature. It is understood that the energy band gap shift of ZnMgS:Mn thin film phosphor occurs with varying RTA temperature.

  • Cysteine and histidine-capped water-dispersible ZnS:Mn nanocrystals (ZnS:Mn-Cys and ZnS:Mn-His) were synthesized and their effects on E. coli and human cells were investigated. Particle sizes of these nanocrystals were found from HR-TEM images to be 3.5 nm and 4.0 nm, respectively. Their solution photoluminescence spectra showed identical broad emission peaks at 580 nm. ZnS:Mn-His significantly suppressed the growth of E. coli at $100{\mu}g/mL$ and 1 mg/mL concentrations, something not observed with ZnS:Mn-Cys. Consistent with this, greater inhibition of cell proliferation and viability were observed in HEK293 and IMR90 cells in ZnS:Mn-His at $100{\mu}g/mL$ and 1 mg/mL concentrations.

  • The mechanism of formation of perovskite phase and the dielectric properties of PZMN[Pb(Zn, Mg)1/3Nb2/3O3] ceramics were examined using two different types of the columbite precursors, (Mg, Zn)Nb2O6 (MZN) and MgNb2O6+ZnNb2O6 (MN+ZN). The formatin of perovskite phase in PbO+MN+ZN system is characterized by an initial rapid formation of Mg-rich perovskite phase, followed by a sluggish formation of Zn-rich perovskite phase. On the other hand, thepyrochlore/perovskite transformation in the PbO+MZN system proceeded uniformly with a spatial homogeneity. The degree of diffuseness of the rhombohedral/cubic phase transitionis higher in the PbO+MN+ZN system than in the PbO+MZN specimen, indicating a broadened compositional distributjion of the B-site catons (Nb+5, Zn+2, Mg+2) in the PbO+MN+ZN system.

  • In this paper, we investigated the effect of luminescence properties of various concentrations of magnesium-doped ZnS:Mn phosphor excited by plasma luminescence device. The PL intensity was evaluated in the range of 300~500 nm excitation wavelengths. We found the highest PL intensity of the phosphors excited by 365 nm and 450 nm was observed at Mg concentrations of 1.4 wt% and 0.8 wt%, respectively. In addition, an emission peak was distinguished at 580 nm wavelength. With increasing Mg dopant level, enhanced PL intensity was observed, which is possibly applicable to color converting materials by blue emission for white light sources. Finally, we evaluated the luminance properties of color converting ZnS:Mn,Mg phosphors with plasma blue light source. the white luminance of plasma light source with CIE(0.36,0.26) was established by color converting phosphors of ZnS:Mn with 0.8 wt% Mg.

  • Mn-doped $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film phosphors have been grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique under various growth conditions. The structural characterization carr~ed out on a series of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) films grown on MgO(l00) substrates usmg Zn-rich ceramic targets. Oxygen pressure was varied from 50 to 200 mTorr and Zn/Ga ratio was the function of oxygen pressure. XRD patterns showed that the lattice constants of the $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film decrease with the substitution of sulfur and selenium for the oxygen in the $ZnGa_2O_4$. Measurements of photoluminescence (PL) properties of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films have indicated that MgO(100) is one of the most promised substrates for the growth of high quality $ZnGa_2O_{4-x}M_{x}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films. In particular, the incorporation of Sulfur or Selenium into $ZnGa_2O_4$ lattice could induce a remarkable increase in the intensity of PL. The increasing of green emission intensity was observed with $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}Se_{0.075}:$Mn^{2+}$ and $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}S_{0.05}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, whose brightness was increased by a factor of 3.1 and 1.4 in comparison with that of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, respectively. These phosphors may promise for application to the flat panel displays.

  • With varying rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature, luminescence properties of $Zn_{0.75}Mg_{0.25}S:Mn$ thin film deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering technique were investigated. In this study, $Zn_{0.75}Mg_{0.25}S:Mn$ thin film phosphor showed more red emission than those of the previous studies when annealed around 600 or $650^{\circ}C$. Although all samples were deposited from identical source composition, a main peak wavelength of photoluminescence spectra of $Zn_{0.75}Mg_{0.25}S:Mn$ shifted toward shorter wavelengths depending upon increase of RTA temperature. The same dependence of wavelength on RTA temperature was also observed in cathodoluminescence as well as electroluminescence measurements. It was revealed that the change of the luminescence properties were originated from structural changes in $Zn_{0.75}Mg_{0.25}S:Mn$ thin film phosphor from cubic to hexagonal phases analyze using conventional X-ray pole figure mapping. The phase transition would be the origin of luminescence property changes with respect to RTA temperature.

  • Mine and leachate waters were collected from the Okdong mine for study on reaction with oxidizing agents such as NaOCl and $H_2O_2$. The pH and EC of the mine and leachate waters are 5.77, 831 uS/cm, and 6.38, 1920 uS/cm, respectively. The concentrations of Mg, Mn, and Zn are 23.25 mg/l, 14.90 mg/l, and 22.99 mg/l for the mine water and 98.75 mg/l, 3.38 mg/l, and 6.16 mg/l for the leachate water. The concentrations of Mg, Mn and Zn decreased after the reaction with the oxidizing agents and mine water. The concentrations of Mg, Mn and Zn rapidly decreased when oxidizing agents increased. The saturation indices that were computed by visual MINTEQ for initial mine and leachate water were undersaturated with Mg, Zn and Mn compounds. The precipitates after the reaction with the oxidizing agents are composed mainly of mangano-calcite[(Mn, Ca)$CO_3$] with small amount of calcite-magnesian and calcite.

  • The reactive wetting behaviors of molten Zn-Al-Mg alloys on MnO- and amorphous (a-) $SiO_2$-covered steel sheets were investigated by the sessile drop method, as a function of the Al and Mg contents in the alloys. The sessile drop tests were carried out at $460^{\circ}C$ and the variation in the contact angles (${\theta}_c$) of alloys containing 0.2-2.5 wt% Al and 0-3.0 wt% Mg was monitored for 20 s. For all the alloys, the MnO-covered steel substrate exhibited reactive wetting whereas the $a-SiO_2$-covered steel exhibited nonreactive, nonwetting (${\theta}_c>90^{\circ}$) behavior. The MnO layer was rapidly removed by Al and Mg contained in the alloys. The wetting of the MnO-covered steel sheet significantly improved upon increasing the Mg content but decreased upon increasing the Al content, indicating that the surface tension of the alloy droplet is the main factor controlling its wettability. Although the reactions of Al and Mg in molten alloys with the $a-SiO_2$ layer were found to be sluggish, the wettability of Zn-Al-Mg alloys on the $a-SiO_2$ layer improved upon increasing the Al and Mg contents. These results suggest that the wetting of advanced high-strength steel sheets, the surface oxide layer of which consists of a mixture of MnO and $SiO_2$, with Zn-Al-Mg alloys could be most effectively improved by increasing the Mg content of the alloys.

  • Water-dispersible ZnS:Mn nanocrystals were synthesized by capping the surface of the nanocrystals with conventional aminoacids ligands: serine and threonine. The aminoacids capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystal powders were characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, EDXS, ICP-AES and FT-IR spectroscopy. The optical properties were also measured by UV/Vis and solution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies in aqueous solvents. The solution PL spectra showed broad emission peaks around 600 nm with PL efficiencies of 9.7% (ZnS:Mn-Ser) and 15.4% (ZnS:Mn-Thr) respectively. The measured particle sizes for the aminoacid capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystals by HR-TEM images were about 3.0-4.0 nm, which were also supported by Debye-Scherrer calculations. In addition, cytotoxic effects of four aminoacids capped ZnS:Mn nanocrsystals over the growth of wild type E. coli were investigated. Although toxicity in the form of growth inhibition was observed with all the aminoacids capped ZnS:Mn nanocrystals at higher dose (1 mg/mL), ZnS:Mn-Met and ZnS:Mn-Thr appeared non-toxic at doses less than 100 ${\mu}g$/mL. Low biological toxicities were seen at doses less than 10 ${\mu}g$/ mL for all nanocrystals.
