The Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia powder was prepared by spontaneous precipitation method using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_O-YCl_33{\cdot}6H_2O$ solution as a starting materials. The optimal experimental conditions such as concentration and pH of starting solutions, the amounts of stabilizer $Y_2O_3$ used, and sintered temperature were carefully studied. The best condition for synthesizing $ZrO_2$ was experimentally selected and applied throughout this study for the preparation of the 3 mole% $Y_2O_3$ partially stabilized zirconia, 3YSZ. The physical properties of 3YSZ was examined by XRD, Raman, DT A, and SEM. The structural transition from pure monoclinic high temperature $ZrO_2$ to tetragonal room temperature 3YSZ was made possible by the added amount of $Y_2O_3$ in the $ZrO_2+Y_2O_3$ system. All Raman Spectrum band appeared in the lower wave numbers rather than in higher wave numbers as structure changes from monoclinic to tetragonal.
Yttria-bismuth-stabilized zirconia was investigated with respect to the amount of $Bi_2O_3$ addition in the ran-ge of 0.5~5mol% to the base composition of $(ZrO_2)_{0.92}(Y_2O_3)_{0.08}.Bismuth was introduced into the ma-terial with $Bi_2O_3-SiO_2$ glasses in order to reduce the evaporation of components. The sinterbility evaporation of components phase formation and microstructure were evaluated depending on the amount of $Bi_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass addition. Two probe A. C conductivity measurement was subjected to all the specimens and the result was discussed on the possible substitution of $Bi^{3+}$ for $Zr^{4+}$ and interistial $Si^{4+}$ in the fluorite structure of zirconia crystal there-upon the possible change in the capability of oxygen transference within the material. It was found that the addition of $Bi_2O_3$ could improve the sinterbility of material very much while not so much.oxygen sensing material suitable for relative low temperature firing.
Fine ceramic particles of zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA), titania toughened alumina (TTA), and zirconia-titania toughened alumina (ZTTA) have been synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at various temperatures from starting salt solutio ns of various compositions aiming for the development of catalytic material. These particles were characterized for properties such as shape, size and size distribution, diffraction pattern, and chemical and phase composition of elements by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analyzer (PSA), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Chemical compositions and sizes of ceramic composites have been controled by the stoichiometry of salt solutions and the flow rate of spraying solutions. The optimum experimental conditions for the various composite particle syntheses have been proposed.

Ceramic is widely known material due to its outstanding mechanical property. Besides, Zirconia(ZrO2) has a low thermal conductivity so it is advantage in a heat insulation. Because of these superior properties, ZrO2 is attracted to many fields using ultra high temperature for example vehicle engines, aerospace industry, turbine, nuclear system and so on. However brittle fracture is a disadvantage of the ZrO2. In order to overcome this problem, we can make the ceramic materials to the forms of ceramic nanoparticles, ceramic nanowhiskers and these forms can be used to an agent of composite materials. In this work, we selected Au catalyzed Vapor-Liquid-Solid mechanism to synthesize ZrO2 nanowhiskers. The ZrO2 whiskers are grown through Hot-wall Chemical Vapor Deposition(Hot wall CVD) using ZrCl4 as a powder source and Au film as a catalyst. This Hot wall CVD method is known to comparatively cost effective. The synthesis condition is a temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$, a pressure of 760torr(1atm) and carrier gas(Ar) flow of 500sccm. To observe the morphology of ZrO2 scanning electron microscopy is used and to identify the crystal structure x-ray diffraction is used.
The effect of $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding on preparation of zirconia/alumina gel fragment prepared by sol-gel processing was characterized through XRD, SEM, TG/DTA and IR analysis. Aluminum isopropoxide and zirconium butoxide were used as starting materials. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding restrained grain growth of alumina and zirconia, and decreased tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation of zirconia on cooling. Therefore, fine zirconia-toughened alumina composite having the relative sintered density of about 98% of theoretical at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h could be obtained.
A solid acid catalyst, NiSO4/CeO2-ZrO2 was prepared simply by promoting ZrO2 with CeO2 and supporting nickel sulfate on CeO2-ZrO2. The support of NiSO4 on ZrO2 shifted the phase transition of ZrO2 from amorphous to tetragonal to higher temperatures because of the interaction between NiSO4 and ZrO2. The surface area of 10-NiSO4/1-CeO2-ZrO2 promoted with CeO2 and calcined at 600 oC was very high (83 m2/g) compared to that of unpromoted 10-NiSO4/ZrO2 (45 m2/g). This high surface area of 10-NiSO4/1-CeO2-ZrO2 was due to the promoting effect of CeO2 which makes zirconia a stable tetragonal phase as confirmed by XRD. The role of CeO2 was to form a thermally stable solid solution with zirconia and consequently to give high surface area and acidity of the sample, and high thermal stability of the surface sulfate species. 10-NiSO4/1- CeO2-ZrO2 containing 1 mol% CeO2 and 10 wt% NiSO4, and calcined at 600 oC exhibited maximum catalytic activities for both reactions, 2-propanol dehydration and cumene dealkylation.
Purpose: As the demand and importance of aesthetic aspects in dental treatment become higher, much attention is paid to materials used for dental prostheses. Thus, the marginal fidelity of most-commonly used alloy, IPS - Empress and ZrO2 ceramic is compared. Methods: The alloy core made by casting, IPS - Empress core made by pressing and ZrO2 ceramic core made by CAD/CAM are used to make 10 samples respectively. For each core, three points were measures and the optical microscope (Axio Imager.Alm,Zeiss co., Oberkochen, Germany) was used to observe the cores with a magnification of 100. Results: As for alloy, IPS - Empress and ZrO2 ceramic, the average and deviation of their marginal distance are $29.91\;{\pm}11.93{\mu}m$ for alloy, $33.45\;{\pm}8.61{\mu}m$ for IPS - Empress, and $31.55\;{\pm}9.85{\mu}m$ for ZrO2. The one-way ANOVA test was conducted to compare them. However, there was no statistically significant difference among them. Conclusion: The study on marginal fidelity of alloy, IPS - Empress, and ZrO2 ceramic shows they have no marginal fidelity problem clinically. Therefore, if a system is selected based on the patient's condition or treatment method, there will be no problem.
Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-zirconia bioceramics, which have excellent biocompatibility with tissue of bone and tooth and good mechanical properties, were synthesized, and their properties and biocompatibility were investigated. HAp powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67 and pH 11 by precipitation method. A fine spherical monodispersed ZrO2 powders were prepared by metal alkoxide method, and then they were partially stabilized with 10 mol% CaO by solid state reaction at 1300℃. HAp-zirconia composites were prepared by sintering of these HAp mixed with various amount CaO-partially stabillized zirconia (PSZ). When HAp containing 15 wt% PSZ with 10 mol% CaO (PSZ(10C)) were sintered at 1250℃, it was prevented to decompose into TCP and ZrO2 was uniformly dispersed at HAp matrix. Mechanical strength of these sintered bodies were increased by addition of 15 wt% PSZ(10C), the bending strength of compacts fired at 1250℃ was 165 MPa. HAp-PSZ composites chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was HAp. These composites did not prevent cell-growing and exhibit any cytotoxic effects.

A nanolaminate consisting of alternate layers of aluminium oxide ($Al_2O_3$) (5 nm) and zirconium oxide ($ZrO_2$) (20 nm) was deposited at an optimized oxygen partial pressure of $3{\times}10^{-2}$ mbar by pulsed laser deposition. The nanolaminate film was analysed using high temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD) to study phase transition and thermal expansion behaviour. The surface morphology was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). High temperature X-ray diffraction indicated the crystallization temperature of tetragonal zirconia in the $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ multilayer-film was 873 K. The mean linear thermal expansion coefficient of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ was $4.7{\times}10^{-6}\;K^{-1}$ along a axis, while it was $13.68{\times}10^{-6}\;K{-1}$ along c axis in the temperature range 873-1373 K. The alumina was in amorphous nature. The FESEM studies showed the formation of uniform crystallites of zirconia with dense surface.
Zirconia modified with $MoO_3$ was prepared by impregnation of powdered $Zr(OH)_4$ with ammonium heptamolybdate aqueous solution followed by calcining in air at high temperature. Spectroscopic studies on prepared catalysts were performed by using FTIR, Raman, XRD, and DSC and by measuring surface area. Upon the addition of molybdenum oxide to zirconia up to 15 wt%, the specific surface area increased in proportion to the molybdate oxide content, while acidity measured by irreversible chemisorption of ammonia exhibited a maximum value at 3 wt% of $MoO_3$. Since the $ZrO_2$ stabilizes the molybdenum oxide species, for the samples equal to or less than 30 wt%, molybdenum oxide was well dispersed on the surface of zirconia and no phase of crystalline $MoO_3$ was observed at any calcination temperature above $400^{\circ}C$. The catalytic activities for cumene dealkylation were roughly correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by ammonia chemisorption method, while the catalytic activities for 2-propanol dehydration were not correlated with the acidity because weak acid sites are necessary for the reaction.
