The objective of this work is to present a zeroth-order shear deformation theory for free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) nanoscale plates resting on elastic foundation. The model takes into consideration the influences of small scale and the parabolic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness of the nanoscale plate and thus, it avoids the employ use of shear correction factors. Also, in this present theory, the effect of transverse shear deformation is included in the axial displacements by using the shear forces instead of rotational displacements as in available high order plate theories. The material properties are supposed to be graded only in the thickness direction and the effective properties for the FG nanoscale plate are calculated by considering Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The equations of motion are obtained using the nonlocal differential constitutive expressions of Eringen in conjunction with the zeroth-order shear deformation theory via Hamilton's principle. Numerical results for vibration of FG nanoscale plates resting on elastic foundations are presented and compared with the existing solutions. The influences of small scale, shear deformation, gradient index, Winkler modulus parameter and Pasternak shear modulus parameter on the vibration responses of the FG nanoscale plates are investigated.

This work is concerned with various planar deformations of an isotropic sandwich beam, which generally consists of three layers: two stiff skin layers and one soft core layer. When one layer of the sandwich beam is modeled as a beam, the variational-asymptotic method is rigorously used to construct a zeroth-order beam model, which is similar to a generalized Timoshenko beam model capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation. To analyze the planar sandwich beam, the sum of the energies of the two skin layers and one core layer is then formulated with different material and geometric properties and represented by a universal beam model in terms of the core-layer kinematics through interface displacement and stress continuity conditions. As a preliminary validation, two extreme examples are presented to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of this present approach.

This paper presents a miniaturized epsilon negative (ENG) zeroth-order resonance (ZOR) patch antenna with an improved bandwidth. The miniaturization and the broad bandwidth of the ENG ZOR patch antenna are achieved by using a meandered via and a high permeability substrate instead of a straight via and a dielectric substrate. The use of a meandered via allows miniaturization of the ENG ZOR patch antenna without narrowing the bandwidth. The use of a high permeability substrate allows further miniaturization of the ENG ZOR patch antenna and improvement of the bandwidth. A high permeability substrate consisting of a multi-layered substrate is designed to have a small material loss. The antenna (kr=0.32) has a 10 dB fractional bandwidth of ~1 %, which is 1.74 times as broad as that of an antenna with a dielectric substrate.

In this paper, various spiral zeroth-order resonators are proposed for wireless power transmission. Since a zerothorder resonance(ZOR) mode of meta-material transmission lines has the characteristic of an infinite wavelength, its frequency is independent of physical length. Also, to obtain high transmission efficiencies high-Q resonators and strong coupling coefficient between coupled resonators are required. Therefore, the resonators consist of spiral inductor and lumped capacitor to use the ZOR mode and they are optimized via parametric study and circuit analysis for a high-Q resonator design. The optimized resonators are simulated and compared with a conventional spiral resonator and one of them was fabricated and measured. The fabricated one has a dimension of $20cm{\times}20cm{\times}8cm$($0.009{\lambda}_0{\times}0.009_{\lambda}_0{\times}0.004{\lambda}_0$) and the transmission efficiency of 80 % is measured at 13.56 MHz at transmitted distance of 40 cm.

In this paper, the omnidirectional circularly polarized(CP) antenna using arc-shaped mushroom structure with curved branch is proposed. To obtain a vertical polarization and an omnidirectional radiation pattern, the CP antenna uses zeroth-order resonance(ZOR) mode of composite right and left handed(CRLH) transmission line. The horizontal polarization is achieved by the curved branches. Also, the spacing between curved branch and arc-shaped mushroom structure gives the $90^{\circ}$ phase difference between vortical and horizontal polarization. The proposed antenna, therefore, has an omnidirectional CP radiation pattern In the azimuthal plane. The electrical size of the proposed antenna is reduced by 38%, compared with that of the previously presented omnidirectional CP antenna. In addition, the CP antenna is simply designed without $90^{\circ}$ phase shifter and dual feed line. The proposed antenna uses a Bazooka balun for good impedance matching and radiation pattern. To improve 3 dB axial ratio in XY plane, the designed antenna is optimized. After optimization, the measured 3 dB axial ratio in XY plane is observed in $86{\sim}282^{\circ}$.

In this paper, small epsilon negative(ENG) zeroth-order resonance(ZOR) antenna with improved bandwidth is presented. To reduce the size of ENG ZOR antenna without narrowing bandwidth, large shunt inductance is introduced by adding patterns on patch and meandered via. The effective permittivity of meandered via is less dependent of frequency than that of straight via in same size. Thus, ENG ZOR antenna with meandered via has broader bandwidth. As a result, the bandwidth of ENG ZOR antenna with meandered via is 1.38 times as broad as that of spiral ENG ZOR antenna with straight via. On the other hand, the area of ENG ZOR antenna is reduced by 64 % compared with that of conventional mushroom ZOR antenna.

In this paper, a small mu-zero zeroth order resonance(ZOR) antenna based on meta structure is proposed using parasitic patch at 5.8 GHz. The mu-zero ZOR antenna is designed by utilizing the resonance of series inductance and capacitance of mu-negative transmission line and its size can be further reduced by a simple parasitic patch. The parasitic patch can increase series capacitance of mu-negative transmission line related to a resonant frequency. We have simulated and optimized dimension of the parasitic patch using Ansys commercial simulator(HFSS). As a result, the antenna has the following characteristics: kr of 0.59, efficiency of 92 %, and gain of 6.57 dBi. Also, its size is reduced by 24 % compared to a conventional mu-zero ZOR antenna. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results.

An off-axis zone plate is able to focus on a single order while neglecting the zeroth order in a visible imaging system. This allows one to enhance the contrast quality in diffractive images, which is the major advantage of this type of zone plate. However, most previous reflection zone plates are used in focusing X-rays with a small grazing incident angle and are intricately designed with the use of a local grating period. In this study, we suggest the design of an off-axis elliptical zone plate (EZP) that is used to focus a monochromatic light beam with separation between the first and unfocused orders under a large grazing incident angle of 45°. An assumption using the total grating period, which depends on the average and constant grating period, is proposed to calculate the desired distance between the first and zeroth order and to simplify the construction of a novel model off-center EZP. Four diffractive optical elements (DOEs) with different parameters were subsequently fabricated by direct laser lithography and then verified using a performance evaluation system to compare the results from the assumption with the experimental results.

In this paper, the design of a new bandpass filter based on the modified circular mushroom metamaterial structure is proposed. In detail, half circular mushroom cells are used as the zeroth order resonators(ZOR), and an intermediate gap is adopted to introduce the coupling between neighboring ZOR resonators. The proposed bandpass filter design is validated by the circuit and 3D EM simulations and measurements compared to the target specifications, and the metamaterial properties are proved by the ZOR field distributions and dispersion diagram. Also, the effect of size reduction is addressed.
