The safety-evaluation of ancient wood structures has been executed with only visual inspection. The application of NDE(nondestructive evaluation) is required because the visual inspection has many restrictions. Among many NDE techniques, the stress wave technique was used in this research. This study focused on evaluating the extent of decay in members of ancient structures, using stress wave nondestructive technique. For application of stress wave technique to ancient structures, the threshold time which divides members into categories according to degree of decay should be determined in advance. Stress wave timer (Metriguard Model 239A) was used in this study, specimens used in this research were the members obtained from six ancient structures. All specimens were identified as Hard Pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z. or Pinus thunbergii P.) by microscope. Each member was tested with stress wave passing radially through the pith. In this study, the stress wave time of $12{\mu}s$/cm could distinguish between sound and decayed specimens with accuracy of 77.5 percent. Also, decayed specimens could be separated into moderate and severe categories by stress wave time of $20{\mu}s$/cm. Among the three decay location groups (exterior, mixed, interior), the exterior group could be classified into sound, moderate and severe decay with the greatest accuracy. Stress wave transit time was not sensitive to small decay pockets located in interior of the member.

The analytical procedure of the boundary element method on potential poblems is introduced and the method is used to analyze the wabe poblem which has the boundary condition based on the small amplitude wave theory. The accuracy of the computational scheme is investigated by comparing the results of progressive wave and standing wave on two dimensional (x-z plane) constant depth and the possibility about analyzing more complicated water wave theories using this method is discussed.
In the generalized characteristic coordinate system (GCCS) proposed by Wu and Shi [1], the frame moves at a speed which is a linear combination of the convective speed and the sound speed, thus unifying the classical Eulerian approach, Lagrangian approach, and the unified coordinate system (UCS) of Hui and his co-workers [2]. Here some properties of Euler equations in the GCCS are studied and the advantages of GCCS in capturing expansion fans and shock waves are demonstrated by the results of numerical tests.

Mach-Zehnder type traveling-wave Ti:LiNb $O_3$ optical modulators were designed and fabricated. Optimum parameters of optical waveguides were calculated by means of the FDM. Design of CPW traveling-wave electrodes were performed by the FEM in the active region and by the CMM in the input/output section to obtain the conditions of MW effective index and impedance matching. From the measured S parameters, MW characteristics of the traveling-wane electrodes were extracted to be ${\alpha}_m$=0.05426 $\sqrt{f}$, $N_{eff}$=2.2025, and $Z_{c}$=39 ${\Omega}$. The calculated optical response R($\omega$) showed the 3 dB bandwidth of 10 GHz.z..

In this study, the propagation characteristics of Lamb waves in anisotropic silicon wafers of (100) and (111) direction were investigated by PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) line-focused transducer. The modified V(f,z) method was used because the Lamb waves are dispersive. For confirming the anisotropy, a line-focused transducer was used and the silicon wafer was rotated 180 degrees at intervals of 1 degree. As a result, $A_0$ and $S_0$ modes were observed. The speed of $S_0$ mode according to propagation direction showed anisotropy which is associated with the crystal structure, and the speed of $A_0$ mode was isotropic. The result is consistent with the crystal structure of silicon and the mechanism of vibration of each Lamb wave modes.
Design of the optical modulator composed of a three-waveguide coupler and CPW traveling-wave electrodes was carried out. Switching phenomena of three-waveguide couplers were analyzed by using the coupled mode theory, and the coupling-lengths of the devices were calculated by means of the FDM. CPW traveling-wave electrodes were analysed by the CMM and SOR simulation technique in order to find the conditions of phase-velocity and impedance matching. Traveling-wave modulators were fabricated on z-cut LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Ti was in-diffused in LiNbO$_3$ to make waveguides and Au electrodes were built on the waveguides by the electrolyte technique. The fabricated modulator chip was end-polished, pig-tailed and packaged in a brass mount with K-connector. The insertion loss and the switching voltage of the optical modulator were about 4㏈ and 19V, respectively. Network analyzer was used to obtain the S parameter and the corresponding RF response. From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted to be Z$_{c}$= 45 Ω, N$_{eff}$=2.20, and $\alpha$$_{0}$=0.055/cm√GHZ. The measured optical response R($\omega$) was compared with the theoretically estimated one, showing both responses agree well. The measurement results revealed that 3㏈ bandwidth turned out to be about 13 GHz.
New experiments focusing on the evolution characteristics of nonlinear wave trains were conducted in a large wave flume. A series of wave trains with added sidebands, varying initial steepness, perturbed amplitudes and frequencies, were physically generated in a long wave flume. The experimental results show that the increasing wave steepness, increases the speed of sidebands growth. To study the frequency and phase modulation, the Morlet wavelet transform is adopted to extract the instantaneous frequency of wave trains and the phase functions of each wave component. From the instantaneous frequency, there are local frequency downshifts, even an effective frequency downshift was not observed. The frequency modulation increases with an increase in amplitude modulation, and abrupt changes of instantaneous frequencies occur at the peak modulation. The wrapped phase functions show that in the early stage of the modulation, the phase of the upper sideband first diverges from that of the carrier waves. However, at the later stage, the discrepancy phase from the carrier wave transformed to the lower sideband. The phase deviations appear in the front of the envelope's peaks. Furthermore, the evolution of the instantaneous frequency exhibits an approximate recurrence-type for the experiment with large imposed sidebands, even when the corresponding recurrence is not observed in the Fourier spectrum.
This work deals with the size-dependent wave propagation analysis of functionally graded (FG) anisotropic nanoplates based on a nonlocal strain gradient refined plate model. The present model incorporates two scale coefficients to examine wave dispersion relations more accurately. Material properties of FG anisotropic nanoplates are exponentially varying in the z-direction. In order to solve the governing equations for bulk waves, an analytical method is performed and wave frequencies and phase velocities are obtained as a function of wave number. The influences of several important parameters such as material graduation exponent, geometry, Winkler-Pasternak foundation parameters and wave number on the wave propagation of FG anisotropic nanoplates resting on the elastic foundation are investigated and discussed in detail. It is concluded that these parameters play significant roles on the wave propagation behavior of the nanoplates. From the best knowledge of authors, it is the first time that FG nanoplate made of anisotropic materials is investigated, so, presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analysis of such structures.

We have fabricated a LiNbO$_3$ travelling-wave optical modulator. The travelling-wave modulator consisted of M-Z(Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) travelling-wave electrodes. Design of CPW electrodes were performed by SOR(Successive Over Relaxation) to obtain the conditions of Microwave effective index and impedance matching. The fabricated modulator had -3.2 dB insertion loss, and S$_{11}$ below -15 dB up to 12 GHz, S$_{21}$ better than -3 dB upto 7 GHz. It turned out that the optical response showed the 3 dB bandwidth of above 12 GHz.

In this study, simplified linear numerical method that can simulate wave generation and transformation by a moving bottom is introduced. Numerical analysis is conducted in wave number domain after continuity equation, linear dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions and linear kinematic bottom boundary condition are Fourier transformed, and the results are expressed in space domain by an inverse Fourier transform. In the wavenumber domain, the dynamic free water surface boundary condition and the kinematic free water surface boundary condition are numerically calculated, and the velocity potential in the mean water level (z = 0) satisfies the continuity equation and the kinematic bottom boundary condition. Wave generation and transformation are investigated when the triangular and rectangular shape of bottoms move periodically. The results of the simplified numerical method are compared with the results of previous analytical solutions and agree well with them. Stability of numerical results according to the calculation time interval (Δt) and the calculation wave number interval (Δk) was also investigated. It was found that the numerical results were appropriate when Δt ≤ T(period)/1000 and Δk ≤ π/100.
