The paper is focused on the economic analysis of two hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of yttrium and other rare earth elements (REEs) from fluorescent phosphors of spent lamps. The first process includes leaching with sulphuric acid and precipitation of a mixture of oxalates by oxalic acid, the second one includes leaching with sulphuric acid, solvent extraction with D2EHPA, stripping by acid and recovery of yttrium and traces of other rare earths (REs) by precipitation with oxalic acid. In both cases the REEs were recovered as oxides by calcination of the oxalate salts. The economic analysis was estimated considering the real capacity of the HydroWEEE mobile's plant ($420kg\;batch^{-1}$). For the first flow-sheet the cost of recycling comes to $4.0{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $5.40{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The second process is not profitable, as well as the first one, taking into account the composition of the final oxides: the cost of recycling comes to $5.2{\euro}kg^{-1}$, while the revenue from the end-product is around $3.56{\euro}kg^{-1}$. The process becomes profitable if the final RE oxide mixture is sold for nearly $50{\euro}kg^{-1}$, a value rather far from the current market prices but not so unlikely since could be achieved in the incoming years, considering the significant fluctuations of the Res' market.
Zinc oxide (ZnO) based transparent oxide semiconductors have been studied due to their high transmittance and electrical conductivity. Pure ZnO have unstable optical and electrical properties at high temperatures but doped ZnO thin films can have stable optical and electrical properties. In this paper, transparent oxide semiconductors of Y-doped ZnO thin films prepared by sol-gel method. The ionic radius of $Y^{3+}$ (0.90 A) is close to that of $Zn^{2+}$ (0.74 A), which makes Y suitable dopant for ZnO thin films. The Sn-doped ZnO thin films were deposited onto quartz substrates with different atomic percentages of dopant which were Y/Zn = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 at.%. These thin films were pre-heated at $150^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and then annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ or 1 h. The structural and optical properties of the Y-doped ZnO thin films were investigated using field-emission scanning electronmicroscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL).
Two kinds of oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) 316L stainless steel were manufactured using a wet mixing process(wet) and a mechanical alloying method (MA). An MA 316L ODS was prepared by a mixing of metal powder and a mechanical alloying process. A wet 316L ODS was manufactured by a wet mixing with 316L stainless steel powder. A solution of yttrium nitrate was dried after being in the wet 316L ODS alloy. The results showed that carbon and oxygen were effectively reduced during the degassing process before the hydroisostatic process (HIP) in both alloys. It appeared that the effect of HIP treatment on increase in impact energy was pronounced in the MA 316L ODS alloy. The MA 316L ODS alloy showed a higher yield strength and a smaller elongation, when compared to the wet 316L ODS alloy. This seemed to be attributed to the enhancement of bonding between oxide and matrix particles from HIP and to the presence of a finer oxide of about 20 nm from the MA process in the MA 316L ODS alloy.
An optimum route to fabricate oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic superalloy with desired microstructure was investigated. Two methods of high energy ball milling or polymeric additive solution route for developing a uniform dispersion of $Y_2O_3$ particles in Fe-Cr-Al-Ti alloy powders were compared on the basis of the resulting microstructures. Microstructural observation revealed that the crystalline size of Fe decreased with increases in milling time, to values of about 15-20 nm, and that an FeCr alloy phase was formed. SEM and TEM analyses of the alloy powders fabricated by solution route using yttrium nitrate and polyvinyl alcohol showed that the nano-sized Y-oxide particles were well distributed in the Fe based alloy powders. The prepared powders were sintered at 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in vacuum. The sintered specimen with heat treatment before spark plasma sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed a more homogeneous microstructure. In the case of sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$, the alloys exhibited densified microstructure and the formation of large reaction phases due to oxidation of Al.
In this work, the yttrium oxide($Y_2O_3$) thin films as the buffer layer were prepared by the simple solution coating and reel-to-reel process on an unpolished metal tape substrate. The $Y_2O_3$ thin films were successfully synthesized by the hydrolysis of yttrium acetate. We have studied the improvement of surface roughness with the concentration of solution(0.1 M, 0.4 M, M) and the number of coatings. The planarization by solution coating process is simple in comparison with the existing polishing process, and it is eco-friendly, and has the benefits of low cost process. The thickness of $Y_2O_3$ films was increased with the $Y_2O_3$ concentration in the solution, and the surface became smoother with the number of coating cycles. Using this process, we have achieved 1.2 nm RMS roughness from a starting roughness of over 31 nm on 25 ${\mu}m^2$ area.
In this paper, the CLAM steel strengthened by micro-scale Y-Zr-O was prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting (VIM-ESR). Yttrium (Y) and zirconium (Zr) were easy to aggregates into massive yttrium-zirconium-rich inclusions in the steel melted by vacuum induction melting (VIM), which would interrupt the continuity of the matrix and reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Micron-sized Y-Zr-O inclusions would be produced with the removal of original blocky Y-Zr-rich inclusions and the submicron-sized inclusions smaller than $0.2{\mu}m$ could be retained in the steel. The small grain size and the better refinement and distribution uniformity of Y-Zr-O inclusions after remelting would be responsible for the better yield strength and toughness. For VIM-ESR alloy, the ultimate tensile strength is 749 MPa and the yield strength is 642 MPa at room temperature, meanwhile they are 391 MPa and 367 MPa at $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. Meanwhile, the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) reduced from $-43^{\circ}C$ (VIM) to $-76^{\circ}C$ (VIM-ESR).

Mixed oxide compounds of potential usefulness for fibre coatings (hexagonal celsian, $BaAl_2Si_2O_8$ and lanthanum hexaluminate, $LaAl_{11}O_{18}$) or for matrix materials (yttrium aluminium garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$) were prepared by hybrid sol-gel synthesis and their thermal crystallisation was monitored by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and multinuclear solid state MAS NMR. All the gels convert to the crystalline phase below about $12200^{\circ}C$, via amorphous intermediates in which the Al shows and NMR resonance at 36-38 ppm sometimes ascribed to Al in 5-fold coordination. Additional information about the structural changes during thermal treatment was provided by $^{29}Si$, $^{137}Ba$ and $^{89}Y$ MAS NMR spectroscopy, showing that the feldspar framework of celsian begins to be established by about $500^{\circ}C$ but the Ba is still moving into its polyhedral lattice sites about $400^{\circ}C$ after the sluggish onset of crystallization. Lanthanum hexaluminate and YAG crystallise sharply at 1230 and $930^{\circ}C$ respectively, the former via $\gamma-Al_2O_3$, the latter via $YAlO_3$. Yttrium moves into the garnet lattice sites less than $100^{\circ}C$ after crystallisation.
There are several manufacturing techniques for developing thermionic cathodes for vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) ionizers. The triple alkaline earth metal emitters(Ca-Sr-Ba) are formulated as efficient and reliable thermo-electron sources with a great many different compositions for the ionizing devices. We prepare two basic suspensions with different compositions: calcium, strontium and barium. After evaluating the electron-emitting performance for europium, gadolinium, and yttrium-based cathodes mixed with these suspensions, we selected the yttrium for its better performance. Next, another transition metal indium and a lanthanide metal neodymium salt is introduced to two base emitters. These final composite metal emitters are coated on the tungsten filament and then activated to the oxide cathodes by an intentionally programmed calcination process under an ultra-high vacuum(${\sim}10^{-6}torr$). The performance of electron emission of the cathodes is characterized by their anode currents with respect to the addition of each element, In and Nd, and their concentration of cathodes. Compared to both the base cathodes, the electron emission performance of the cathodes containing indium and neodymium decreases. The anode current of the Nd cathode is more markedly degraded than that with In.
This paper reports the effect of a refractory crucible type on the microstructure of duplex stainless steel (DSS) cast with the addition of gadolinium using air-induction melting. Grade 4A DSSs with 1 wt% of gadolinium (Gd) were fabricated in various crucibles including alumina ($Al_2O_3$), magnesia (MgO), calcia (CaO) coated with yttria ($Y_2O_3$) and graphite. The standard free energies of the formation of calcium and yttrium oxide were lower than those of gadolinium oxide and other crucible elements based oxide. The yield of Gd in DSS using $Al_2O_3$, MgO, CaO-coated $Y_2O_3$ and graphite was 5, 19, 83 and 96%, respectively. As Gd yield increased, the amount of Gd-based inclusions increased, the size of the inclusions were reduced, and the inclusions became evenly distributed.

A Q-switched diode-pumped neodymium-doped yttrium vanadate (YVO4, λ =1064nm) laser was used for the direct patterning of indium tin oxide (ITO) films on glass substrate. During the laser direct patterning, the laser beam was incident on the two different directions of glass substrate and the laser ablated patterns were compared and analyzed. At a low scanning speed of laser beam, the larger laser etched lines were obtained by laser beam incident in reverse side of glass substrate. On the contrary, at a higher scanning speed, the larger etched pattern sizes were found in case of the beam incidence from front side of glass substrate. Furthermore, it was impossible to find no ablated patterns in some laser beam conditions for the laser beam from reverse side at a much higher scanning speed and repetition rate of laser beam. The laser beam is expected to be transferred and scattered through the glass substrate and the laser beam energy is thought to be also dispersed and much more influenced by the overlapping of each laser beam spot.
