The primary object of this study was to examine both preferences in a variety of foods and snacks and the eating habits among young children (aged 13 months through 50 months old). In addition, this study examined whether there would be significant differences in the preferences and eating habits by of young children of different ages and gender of young children. This study included 193 infants (85 boys, 108 girls) of aged 13 through 50 months of old who were enrolled in early childhood education and care settings in Seoul and Gyunggi Province. The information regarding food and snack preferences among young children were gathered through surveys filled out by their mothers and the children's overall eating habits were assessed by their teachers. The main results of this study were as follows. Overall, there were some patterns in eating bere asss and food preferences in foods and snacks among young children. There were no significant differences in both eating bere asss and food preferences by gender of young children. But, however, there were significant differences in food (p<0.001) and snack preferences (p<0.001) by of children of different ages of young children.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to nutrients intakes among young children aged 1-5 years and their mothers. Methods: The study subjects were 621 young children and their mothers from the data of 2nd year (2014) and 3rd year (2015) of the 6th National Health and Nutrition Survey. To find a difference of Recommended Nutrient Intake in young children and their mothers, independent t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan test as a post-hoc analysis were used. For the factors influencing young children Recommended Nutrient Intakes, hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used. Results: The mean score of Recommended Nutrient Intakes was $6.92{\pm}2.17$ in young children and $4.74{\pm}2.06$ in mothers. The Recommended Nutrient Intakes of young children was increased according to gender (boy) (p=0.001), increasing young children age ($p{\leq}0.001$), young children breakfast frequency (p<0.001), mothers age (p<0.001), education level (p=0.020) and mothers lunch frequency (p=0.002) and family income (p=0.007). The Recommended Nutrient Intakes of mothers was increased according to their age (p=0.005), family income (p=0.020) and having breakfast (p=0.038). The factor that influenced young children Recommended Nutrient Intakes was their mothers Recommended Nutrient Intakes (${\beta}=0.21$, p<0.001). Conclusions: Given the results, it is necessary to establish a plan or nutrition education for young children's menu differently depending on their age and gender. Since mothers' Recommended Nutrient Intakes influence their young children's Recommended Nutrient Intakes, it is necessary to provide mothers' with nutrition education about the importance of mothers' nutrition management and right nutrient intakes, and to make customized nutrition education guidelines in consideration of mothers' characteristics.
Not all parents are skilled in scaffolding their young children's numeracy learning. The present study investigated the effectiveness of a parent training program in promoting Filipino young children's number sense via card game playing at home. Participants were 161 young children and their parents; families were of a relatively low socioeconomic status. During the 10-week intervention period, parents in the experimental group received training on how to use number game cards to help their children acquire various numeracy concepts; parents in the control group received no special instructions. Children in the experimental group showed greater improvements in their performance on six number sense tasks (namely numeral identification, object counting, rote counting, missing number, numerical magnitude comparison, and addition) over the intervention period than did children in the control group. Findings of the present study suggest that providing simple training to parents on strategies for fostering their young children's number sense at home is important for giving children a good early start in basic number knowledge.
This case study describes the nature of young children's responses in the informational picturebook reading process through the eyes of 4 young children. Over a twenty week period from September 3, 2007 to February 15, 2008, researcher observed 4 young children while they read informational picturebooks and interacted with one another in terms of what they had read. The young children's personalities, preferences and environments as individual background clearly influenced responses and interaction during the reading process. By acknowledging the response styles of young children, a teacher can assist young children in developing a repertoire of responses to informational picturebooks.
This study investigated the relationship among fathers' parenting involvement, mothers' parenting competence, and young children's self-control. Participants consisted of 325 mothers and young children (169 boys and 153 girls) from the Seoul area who completed questionnaires on fathers' parenting involvement, mothers' parenting competence, and young children's self-control. Data were statistically analyzed using basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Baron and Kenny's method was examined. Subsequently, the Sobel test was performed to check the mediating model's significance and was adapted to SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. The major findings were as follows. First, fathers' parenting involvement was positively correlated with young children's self-control and mothers' parenting competence. Second, mothers' parenting competence was positively correlated with young children's self-control. The mothers' parenting competence indicated a tendency to play a perfectly/partially play a mediating role between fathers' parenting involvement and young children's self-control; consequently, a fathers' parenting involvement had a direct effect as well as an indirect effect through the mothers' parenting competence on young children's self-control. The results indicated that a mothers' parenting competence plays a crucial role in the relationship between a fathers' parenting involvement and the young children's self-control.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the young children's creative trait and personality affecting their learning readiness. The participants were 131 young children in kindergartens or nursery schools and their mothers from Seoul, Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. The instruments were the Korea Learning Readiness Test, Young Children's Creative Traits Test, and Young Children's Personality Test. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's partial correlation, stepwise multiple regression, and Scheff$\'{e}$ test by SPSS PC(version17.0) program. The results were as follows. Firstly, there were no significant differences in young children's learning readiness, creative trait and personality by children's age, location, school type, father's age, mother's educational level and mother's job type, while there were significant differences in the creative trait and the subfactor scores of personality by children's sex, father's educational level and parents' job type. Secondly, there was a positive partial correlation(r = .20~.24) between young children's learning readiness and creative trait, while there were no correlations between their learning readiness and personality and between their personality and creative trait. Thirdly, cognitive factor of creative trait and father's educational level did not effectively explain the children's learning readiness.
The purpose of this study was to identify how characteristics of young children (sex, age, temperament), mothers (employed or unemployed, intimacy between mother and child, parenting attitudes), and home environment (pet, TV/Video viewing) relate to young children's empathy and to examine the relative effects of then variables on young children's empathy. The subjects for this study were 300 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds selected from kindergartens and day-care centers in Busan. Data were analyzed via t-test, correlation, and multiple regression. Results showed that girls had higher empathy score than boys. Young children's empathy was positively correlated with the sociability of young child's temperament, intimacy between mother and young child, reasoning guidance, affect, achievement of parenting attitudes, and parental intervention toward young child after TV/video viewing. However, young children's empathy was correlated negatively with authoritarian control of parenting attitudes. Among then variables, young children's sex was the most significant variable.
This research investigated television and video viewing of young children in early childhood all-day program settings and teachers' recognition of its effects on young children through the survey of 452 early childhood teachers. The results show that television and video viewing is used as a whole group activity during transition period and/or waiting time activity for children who come earlier in the morning and remain late until closing time. It means television and video viewing at early childhood settings is mainly used as a group baby sitter or pacifier. Daily viewing time is about 44.02 minutes and early childhood teachers show low recognition of their role in children's viewing habits. Young children's viewing patterns and time are differed by teachers' variables so that young children of beginning teachers at small size settings appear more viewing time. Teachers show more negative recognition of television and video viewing on young children when they are older and have higher educational level and longer education experiences. The results also show that the more teachers have positive recognition on television and video viewing, the more young children are exposed to television and video viewing in their classes.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of a young children's happiness program in relation with the Nuri curriculum on young children's happiness and self-esteem. Study subjects included 37 children aged 5 (experimental group 20, comparative group 17) enrolled in A day care center and D day care center located in K district, Seoul. As for the research procedure, an experiment was conducted 48 times in 18 weeks, and the experimental group carried out the children's happiness program linked with the Nuri curriculum. In contrast, the comparative group conducted general activities focusing on the subjects according to the Nuri curriculum. Study results show that there was a significant difference amongst 9 sub-domains related to young children's happiness (health, emotion, immersion, recognition and achievement, parent-child relationship, teacher-child relationship, peer relationship, spirituality, life satisfaction) and 3 sub-domains related to self-esteem (start and spirit of independence, sociality emotionality, academic achievement). Results of this study prove that the children's happiness program in relation with the Nuri curriculum is effective for increasing young children's happiness and self-esteem, and could be used as preliminary data for the possibility of a happiness program in early childhood education settings and happiness education in the future.
