  • Seoul Metropolitan Area has been changed by fierce internal migration during the last several decades. To determine the regional structure, we analyzed the in-and-out migration pattern and main factors affecting the intense of mobility. The migration within metropolitan city and province shows that in Seoul, Songpa and Dobong Gu gained a large population, in Incheon, Namdong Gu experienced a huge population influx, and in Gyeonggi Province, Hwasung, Yongin and Paju city gained a great population. In Seongnam, Suwon city lost a lot of population. These population gains and losses came from mainly residential redevelopment projects in the metropolitan city and new land development projects in Gyeonggi Province. The main factors affecting the intense of mobility diverse from city characters. In central type cities, house price gets the more population influx. In job-housing balanced cities, total income growth rate, housing supply rate and roads cause in-migration. In bed-town type cities, the increase of housing supply rate and parks increase the population. In suburban type cities, business density, housing supply rate, housing, subway station number and educational facilities increase population from outside the city. So, we have to prepare more detailed urban and housing policy responses.

  • This study was aimed at assess environmental conservation functions by analyzing the change of land use areas in agricultural fields between 1999 and 2006, and comparing land surface temperature distribution between 1994 and 2006 in Yongin city. Land use maps of Yongin city were obtained from soil maps for 1999, Quickbird satellite images(less than 1 m) and parcel map for 2006. The land use area for Yongin city was in the order of forest > paddy field > upland > residence & building in 1999, and forest > residence & building > paddy field > upland in 2006. Decrease of paddy and upland fields reduced 34% and 41% of the capability of agricultural multifunctionality as to environment including flood control, groundwater recharge, and air cooling. Land surface temperature(LST) was derived from Landsat TM thermal infrared band acquired in September of 1994 and 2006 and classified into three grades. The results impplied that green vegetation in agricultural field and forest play an important role to reduce land surface temperature in warm season.

  • A xylanase-producing bacterium was isolated from a soil sample collected in Yongin city, Korea. The strain was aerobic and gram positive, and grew between pH 5.0 and 11.0, forming a yellow-colored colony. The strain was classified as a novel subspecies bacterium of Paenibacillus barcinonensis by 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic, and biochemical characteristics, and thus named Paenibacillus sp. HX-1. This strain produced extracellular endo-${\beta}$-1,4-xylanase, and the best xylanolytic activity (205.17 unit/ml) was obtained at 96 h in an optimized TNX medium containing 1% (w/v) bacto tryptone, 1% (w/v) NaCl, and 0.7% (w/v) beechwood xylan at pH 7.0, $37^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm. The endo-${\beta}$-1,4-xylanase produced by the strain HX-1 yielded xylobiose as the end product from beechwood xylan hydrolysis. The enzyme exhibited optimum pH and temperature at pH 7.0 and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. The remarkable enhancing effect of the TNX medium on xylanase production by HX-1, in spite of its simple formula, may have great advantages for industrial applications of xylanase.

  • This study was carried out to develop the close-to nature construction technology for the stream which has been improved just for the flood control with artificially straightened and concrete covered, losing the various functions of the stream such as wild-life habitat, polluted water purification and waterscape. Jungpyung stream in youngin City, Kyunggi Province was selected as a case study site. The results were as follows; 1. Existing stream improvement planning could accept the close-to-nature techniques of the low-flow revetment, keeping the capability of flood control and water use. 2. The low-flow revetment was planned and executed to the bottom of the stream without damaging the existing bank, and the slope of the low-flow revetment was adjusted as 1:1.2∼1.5. Consequently it would not disturb the water flow when the flood occurred and it would keep the constant water flow even at the drought with providing a stable ecosystem and water purification. 3. Low-flow revetement was planted with Salix species and perennials naturally, and it would be a precious biotope for the diverse floras and faunas. 4. Some furnitures such as stepping stone bridge, wooden bridge and step were installed to the suitable locations for the convenience of users, and it will be ot only the sound stream environment but also easy access to the waterscape. 5. This case study site will be monitored for 3 years systematically after the construction was finished in September, 1999 to get the exact results for the scientific approvement

  • In 2005 and 2007, petiole and root rot of Spathiphyllum spp. was occurred at commercial greenhouse during summer (June-September) in Koyang city and Yongin city, Kyunggi-do, Korea. The pathogenic fungus was isolated from diseased plants and the cultural and morphological chracteristic were observed. Conidia were rod in shape, 1-3 septa and $67.5-95.0{\times}4.8-6.5\;{\mu}m$ (av. $82.0{\times}6.0\;{\mu}m$) in size. The optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of the isolates was $27^{\circ}C$. According to result the pathogenicity test, first disease symptoms appeared five days after inoculation. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Cylindrocladium spathiphylli. This is the first report on Spathiphyllum spp. caused by C spathiphylli in Korea.

  • As a large city advanced, the urban environment is becoming an issue. The contribution of vehicle emissions in air pollutants was very high according to the clean air policy support system (CAPSS). In order to improve the air quality in large cities, it is necessary to establish improvement measures by sources, analyzing the air quality of roadside. We divided Bucheon city into 4 regions to investigate the roadside pollutants of each district using the mobile laboratory (ML) and air quality monitoring station (AQMS). ML was used to measure pollutants emitted from vehicles and AQMS data was used as a comparison group of ML data. As a measurement result of pollutants in the roadside, the concentration of air pollutants in industrial & engineering complex area was the highest and concentration of air pollutants in residential & forest complex area was lower. By street, Bucheon-ro, Sinheung-ro, Sosa-ro, and Gyeongin-ro were identified as high concentrations. Therefore, further researches on preparing management measures for roads in the hot-spot area are needed.

  • A survey of concrete plants in Incheon Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province was used to conduct an analysis of aggregate transport distance and production forms, as well as to evaluate the features and current status of aggregates distribution. As a result, areas such as Incheon, Siheung, Bucheon, Gimpo, and Siheung, where the distance to the demand points is less than 20 km, exhibited bidirectional distribution whereas Paju, Yongin, Yangju, and Pocheon, with distances ranging from 20 to 50 km is showed a unidirectional distribution pattern supplying aggregates exclusively to Incheon. Survey on manufacturing forms, more than 85% of the gravel dispersed in the Incheon area is made up of crushed aggregates derived from rocks discharged at construction sites indicating a considerable skew in supply chain. These findings are predicted to have a detrimental influence on aggregate supply in the long run, necessitating policy changes targeted at building an optimal aggregate distribution market.

  • In order to resolve the problem of aged land[jlJ leachate treatment, limitation in removal of non-biodegradable materials and denitrification caused by carbon source shortage, we applied combined process consisted of 5MBR and RO to leachate treatment. We perfonned 5MBR pilot plant tests on Yongin City for a period of about lOOdays, demonstrated the performance of the SlVlUR process (($NH_3$-N removal efficiency; 90%). But there was also limitation to removal of non-biodegradable materials and denitrification. In full-scale plant we observed the IXrformance of combined process (SMI3R + R/O) in order to confirm the expected treatment efficiencies. Their results were approximately 98%, 94% of treatment efficiency in case of $COD_{Cr}$(<3 mg/L) and TN(<50 mg/L)respectively and the results of treatment were stable.

  • Biotope Area Ratio ($BFF; BiotopFl{\"{a}}chenFaktor$) was developed in Berlin, Germany in 1990s and introduced to Korea in 1999. It is the ratio of the uncovered soil areas which have the natural circulating capability compared to whole development areas. This study seeks for alternative ways to increase Biotope Area Ratio of residential areas in the metropolitan areas of Korea by investigation on new housing developments. The study investigates four new towns including Seoul Eunpyung new town, Yongin Kusung district, Goyang Pungdong and Juyeopdong districts and Hwasung Dongtan district. The Biotope Area Ratio of study sites is between 23.51 % and 40.69%. This result is not relevant to land use conditions, such as the building-ta-land ratio, natural ground green area ratio. This ratio satisfies the minimum requirements of City of Seoul, except 2 sites. Considering that the study sites are relatively low density land use areas compared to Seoul's average, thus, a higher standards is necessary for new town housing complexes. Because Biotope Area Ratio includes artificial ground green area ratio, Biotope Area Ratio is possible can be increased with decreased natural ground green area ratio. And so, when Biotope Area Ratio is applied to new town development, it must go side by side with a definite natural ground green area ratio.
