  • In this study, a beam-column junction type damper is proposed which saves the inner and outer space for the installation of damping devices and allows easy adjustment of control performance The result of the numerical analysis indicated that the displacement response and base shear of a single degree of freedom system by seismic load, El Centro 1940 was reduced with yield moment of the joint hinge and the specific yield moment ratio $\delta$ of the joint hinge existed for the optimal seismic performance. In addition, the dynamic nonlinear characteristics, effects of yielding and dependence of natural period of bi-linear system with the junction type damper is identified. The analysis of multi-degree of freedom system showed that responses of the controlled structures was reduced significantly as the number of a story increases and yield moment ratio decreases when the system is excited by seismic load and sine wave. On top of that, it was also observed that energy dissipation at the joint connected with the dampers was remarkable during excitation.

  • In this paper, a numerical simulation study was conducted on the seismic behavior and ductility demand of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems with partially self-centering hysteresis. Unlike fully self-centering systems, partially self-centering systems display noticeable residual displacement after unloading is completed. Such partially self-centering behavior has been observed in a number of recently researched self-centering structural systems with energy dissipation devices. It is thus of interest to examine the seismic performance such as ductility demand of partially self-centering systems. In this study, a modified flag-shaped hysteresis model with residual displacement is proposed to represent the hysteretic behavior of partially self-centering structural systems. A parametric study considering the effect of variations in post-yield stiffness ratio, energy dissipation coefficient, and residual displacement ratio on the displacement ductility demand of partially self-centering systems was conducted using a suite of 192 scaled ground motions. The results of this parametric study reveal that increasing the post-yield stiffness, energy dissipation coefficient or residual displacement ratio of the partially self-centering systems generally leads to reduced ductility demand, especially for systems with lower yield strength.

  • Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) has been used for the only edible oil in Korea. We carried out the field experiment in order to investigate the possibly combined effects of mepiquat chloride (MC) and trinexapac-ethyl (TE) on oil composition, lignan content, seed yield and endogenous gibberellins content of flax cultivar. Plant growth retardants mepiquat chloride (300 and 600 ppm) and trinexapac-ethyl (100, 200 and 300 ppm) were foliar-sprayed to flax plant at 50days after seeding. The plant height was decreased in the combination of mepiquat chloride 600 ppm with trinexapac-ethyl 100, 200 and 300 ppm. Mepiquat chloride treatment combined with trinexapac-ethyl observed the highest response on seed yield, followed by mepiquat chloride 300 ppm with trinexapac-ethyl 100 ppm, mepiquat chloride 300 ppm with trinexapac-ethyl 200 ppm and mepiquat chloride 300 ppm with trinexapac-ethyl 300 ppm. Lignan content was increased in all of the combination treatments. It concludes that the combination of mepiquat chloride 300 ppm with trinexapac-ethyl 300 ppm will be useful to increasing oil and lignan content in flax plants.

  • Even though grass species are one of major importance in livestock industry, the response of intergeneric hybridization of Lolium and Festuca and interspecific hybridization of Lolium m.X Lolium p. to Korean climatic condition has not been adequately documented. This reasearch was conducted to examine the growth characteristics and dry matter yield of Festulolium, cv. Felopa and C-Stamm N 66 and hybrid ryegrass, cv. Maja and Tetilelite. 1. The early growth of Italian ryegrass was better than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. The plant length and height of Italian ryegrass were longer/taller than those of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium, but the number of tillers of Italian ryegrass was less than that of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium. 2. Festuloliu and hybrid ryegrass were more tolerant than Italian ryegrass to winter killing, 70-80% of tillers was survived. 3. After wintering, early spring growth of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were better than that of Italian ryegrass. Dry matter yield of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium were more than that of Italian ryegrass. 4. Spikes of hybrid ryegrass and Festulolium (C-Stamm N66) were more than those of Italian ryegrass. Seed yield per $m^2$ of hybrid ryegrass and Italian ryegrass were almost same, but that of Festuloliu was lower.

  • Anther derived double haploids (DHs) from sweet pepper genotypes ('Special', 'Derby', 'Bossanova', 'Fiesta', 'Debora' and 'Minipaprika') were used to study the agronomic variation in 2006. Ninety-nine successful DHs regenerants (32 from 'Special', 25 from 'Derby', 23 from 'Bossanova', 10 from 'Fiesta', 6 from 'Debora' and 3 from 'Minipaprika') were transplanted at plastic house and studied on their agronomic characters. Variation in agronomic characters was observed within the DHs of each genotype. DHs obtained from 'Derby' and 'Fiesta' exhibited wide variation in fruit yield $plant^{-1}$ whereas averaged fruit yield $plant^{-1}$ was highest in 'Derby' (1608 g) and less variation was observed in DHs of 'Bossanova'. Based on the agronomic characters expressed in DHs population at this environment, SP55, SP56, SP60, and SP116 from 'Special', SP8, SP10, SP14, SP16, and SP34 from 'Derby', SP115, SP119, SP142, SP143, SP196, and SP199 from 'Bossanova', SP41, SP45, and SP114 from 'Fiesta', SP21 from 'Debora' and SP91 from 'Minipaprika' identified as elite inbred lines and these DH lines could be used for commercial hybrids production in sweet pepper. Genetic relationship among the selected inbred lines using molecular markers and their response to diseases are further recommended to study.

  • During grain filling period, rice is affected by many environmental factors; including temperature, water, radiation and soil nutrition condition. In future climate, greater shading and heat tolerance will be required in rice. In this study, the effect of shading and high temperature on spikelet sterility was conducted on fourteen Vietnamese cultivars. Field experiments were studied in 2015 and 2016 to evaluate the response of Vietnamese cultivars under high temperature during grain filling stage. The high temperature and shading were applied by closing two sides of growth chamber and covered by a black cloth (50% reduced solar radiation) under the field condition after the first cultivar heading. The sterility increased significantly under high temperature and shading. The highest percentage sterile spiketlets was observed in 'Jasmine 85' (71.7%) under shading and in 'OM4900' (53.4%) under high temperature in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Among the treatments, the percentage of sterile spekelets in Vietnamese cultivars under shading was highest which was 54.9% and 41.8% in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Yield components reduced significantly in both of shading and high temperature. Corresponding with significantly decrease in yield components, the yield in high temperature and shading decreased strongly in both 2015 and 2016.

  • Extraction characteristics of Bonus species of Brassica oleracea var. capita and functional properties of corresponding extract were monitored by response surface methodology (RSM). Maximum extraction yield of 44.07% was obtained at ratio of solvent to sample of 27.94 mL/g, ethanol concentration of 24.35%, and extraction temperature of $55.21^{\circ}C$. At ratio of solvent to sample, ethanol concentration, and extraction temperature of 21.11 mL/g, 58.53%, and $68.83^{\circ}C$, respectively, maximum electron-donating ability was 48.44%. Maximum inhibitory effect on tyrosinase was 68.94% at ratio of solvent to sample, ethanol concentration, and extraction temperature of 24.08 mL/g, 10.49%, and $78.71^{\circ}C$, respectively. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed maximum pseudo-activity of 24.78% at ratio of solvent to sample of 22.66 mL/g, ethanol concentration of 45.69%, and extraction temperature of $93.81^{\circ}C$. Based on superimposition of four-dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield, electron-donating ability, and pseudo-activity of SOD, optimum ranges of extraction conditions were ratio of solvent to sample of 20-30 mL/g, ethanol concentration of 35-65%, and extraction temperature of $50-80^{\circ}C$.

  • Enzymatic hydrolysis of shark (Squatina oculata) cartilage (SC) was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) for chondroitin sulfate (CS) preparation. Among 11 commercial proteases, Maxazyme NNP showed highest productivity (CS yield per enzyme cost) of CS. Optimal hydrolysis conditions determined by RSM were 1.63% and 2.87 hr for enzyme concentration and hydrolysis time ($r^2\;=\;0.9527$, p<0.0l), respectively and highest yield of hydrolysate under the conditions was 42.3%. The yield ($43.1{\pm}2.1%$) and CS content ($24.8{\pm}0.1%$) of hydrolysate at optimal condition verified statistical optimization of SC enzymatic hydrolysis was valid.

  • Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) are phytochrome-related photoreceptor proteins in cyanobacteria and cover a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to far-red. A single GAF domain that they contain can bind bilin(s) autocatalytically via heterologous recombination and then fluoresce, with potential applications as biomarkers and biosensors. Here, we report that a novel red/green CBCR GAF domain, SPI1085g2 from Spirulina subsalsa, covalently binds both phycocyanobilin (PCB) and phycoerythrobilin (PEB). The PCB-binding GAF domain exhibited canonical red/green photoconversion with weak fluorescence emission. However, the PEB-binding GAF domain, SPI1085g2-PEB, exhibited an intense orange fluorescence (λabs.max = 520 nm, λfluor.max = 555 nm), with a fluorescence quantum yield close to 1.0. The fluorescence of SPI1085g2-PEB was selectively and instantaneously quenched by copper ions in a concentration-dependent manner and exhibited reversibility upon treatment with the metal chelator EDTA. This study identified a novel PEB-binding cyanobacteriochrome-based fluorescent protein with the highest quantum yield reported to date and suggests its potential as a biosensor for the rapid detection of copper ions.
