Finite Element Method for Structural Concrete Based on the Compression Field Theory (압축응력장 이론을 적용한 콘크리트 유한요소법 개발)

  • A finite element formulation based on the CFT(Compression Field Theory) concept such as the effect of compression softening in cracked concrete, and macroscopic and rotating crack models etc. was presented for the nonlinear behaviour of structural concrete. In this category, tangential or secant material stiffnesses for cracked concrete were also defined and discussed in view of the iterative solution schemes for nonlinear equations. Considering the computational efficiency and the ability of modelling the post-ultimate behaviour as major concerns, the incremental displacement solution algorithm involving initial material stiffnesses and the relaxation procedure for fast convergence was adopted and formulated in a type of 8-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The analysis program NASCOM(Nonlinear Analysis of structrual Concrete by FEM : Monotonic Loading) developed baed on the CFT constitutive relationships and the incremetal solution strategy described enables the predictions of strength and deformation capacities in a full range. crack patterns and their corresponding widths, and yield extents of reinforcement. As the verfication purpose of NASCOM, the prediction of Cervenka's panel test results including the load resistance and the deformation history was made. A limited number of predictions indicate a good correlation in a general sense.

Production and Characteristics of Bacterial Cellulose, an Eco-Friendly Biomaterial, using Different Carbon Sources (탄소원 종류에 따른 환경친화성 생물소재인 세균 섬유소의 생산 및 특성)

  • Production of Bacterial Cellulose (BC) by Gluconacetobacter sp. A5 was studied in shaken culture using different cost-effective carbon sources and its structural and mechanical properties were evaluated. Glycerol showed the highest level (7.26 g/l) of BC production, which was about three times higher than the yield in glucose medium. BC production depended not only on the decrease in pH, but also on the ability of Gluconacetobacter sp. A5 to synthesize glucose from different carbon sources and then polymerize it into BC. All BC produced from different carbon sources exhibited a three-dimensional reticulated structure consisting of ultrafine cellulose fibriles. Carbon sources did not significantly change the microfibrile structure of the resulting BC. BC produced from glucose medium had the lowest water-holding capacity, while BC from molasses medium had the highest. XRD data revealed that all BC were cellulose type I, the same as typical native cellulose. The crystalline strength of BC produced in glucose medium was the highest, and that in molasses medium was the lowest. Our results suggest that glycerol could be a potential low-cost substrate for BC production, leading to the reduction in the production cost, and also to produce BC with different mechanical properties by selecting appropriate carbon source.

Verification of NASCOM : Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis for Structural Concrete (NASCOM에 의한 실험결과 예측)

As the verification purpose of NASCOM, the predictions were made for Bhide's Panel(PB21) and Leonhardt's deep beam tests. The predicted results shows somewhat stiff behaviour for the panel test, and vice versa for deep beam tests. More refining process would be necessary hereafter in terms of more accurately simulating the effects of tension-stiffening and compression softening in concrete.

  • Low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology using a high power laser have been widely applied to thin film transistors (TFTs) for liquid crystal, organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, driver circuit for system on glass (SOG) and static random access memory (SRAM). Recently, the semiconductor industry is continuing its quest to create even more powerful CPU and memory chips. This requires increasing of individual device speed through the continual reduction of the minimum size of device features and increasing of device density on the chip. Moreover, the flat panel display industry also need to be brighter, with richer more vivid color, wider viewing angle, have faster video capability and be more durable at lower cost.   • Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), one of the common metabolic disorders of pregnancy, leads to functional alterations in various cells including stem cells as well as some abnormalities in fetal development. Perivascular stem cells (PVCs) have gained more attention in recent years, for the treatment of various diseases. However, the effect of GDM on PVC function has not been investigated. In our study, we isolated PVCs from umbilical cord of normal pregnant women and GDM patients and compared their phenotypes and function. There is no significant difference in phenotypic expression, response to bFGF exposure and adipogenic differentiation capacity between normal (N)-PVCs and GDM-PVCs. However, when compared with N-PVCs, early passage GDM-PVCs displayed decreased initial rates of cell yield and proliferation as well as a reduced ability to promote wound closure. These results suggest that maternal metabolic dysregulation during gestation can alter the function of endogenous multipotent stem cells, which may impact their therapeutic effectiveness.

Anion-Dependent Exocyclic Mercury(II) Coordination Polymers of Bis-dithiamacrocycle

  • Synthesis and structural characterization of mercury(II) halides and perchlorate complexes (1-4) of bis-$OS_2$-macrocycle (L) are reported. L reacts with mercury(II) chloride and bromide to yield an isostructural 2D coordination polymers with type $[Hg(L)X_2]_n$ (1: X = Cl and 2: X = Br). In 1, each Hg atom which lies outside the cavity is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry, being bound to four adjacent ligands via monodentate Hg-S bonds and two remaining sites are occupied by two terminal chlorido ligands to form a fishnet-like 2D structure. When reacting with mercury(II) iodide, L afforded a 1D coordination polymer $\{[Hg_2(L)I_4]{\cdot}CHCl_3\}_n$ (3) in which each exocyclic Hg atom is four-coordinate, being bound to two sulfur donors from different ligands doubly bridging the ligand molecules in a head-to-tail mode. The coordination sphere in 3 is completed by two iodo terminal ligands, adopting a distorted tetrahedral geometry. On reacting with mercury(II) perchlorate, L forms solvent-coordinated 1D coordination polymer $\{[Hg_2(L)(DMF)_6](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2DMF\}_n$ (4) instead of the anion-coordination. In 4, the Hg atom is five-coordinate, being bound to two sulfur donors from two different ligands doubly bridging the ligand molecules in a side-by-side mode to form a ribbon-like 1D structure. The three remaining coordination sites in 4 are completed by three DMF molecules in a monodentate manner. Consequently, the different structures and connectivity patterns for the observed exocyclic coordination polymers depending on the anions used are influenced not only by the coordination ability of the anions but also by anion sizes.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the tillering behavior of low- and high-tillering rice plants, IR58. a high-tillering cultivar with small panicles showed not only higher tiller number but also earlier tillering, faster tillering rate and longer tillering duration than IR25588. a low-tillering cultivar with large panicles, Tillering ability of IR25588 was only 59% that of IR58, Percent effective tillers was higher in IR25588(85%) than in IR58 (67%), Tillering response to wider spacing was higher in a high-tillering cultivar than in a low-tillering cultivar, Grain yield response to closer spacing (close spacing adaptability) was higher in a low-tillering cultivar than in a high-tillering cultivar.

Vulnerability Assessment of Rice Production by Main Disease and Pest of Rice Plant to Climate Change (기후변화에 따른 주요 벼 병해충에 의한 벼 생산의 취약성평가)

  • Rice is a main crop and rice field is the most important farmland in Korea. This study was conducted to propose the methodology assessing impact and vulnerability on rice production by climate change at the regional and national level in Korea. We evaluated a vulnerability of rice paddy according to the outbreak of a main disease and pest of a rice plant. As results, Jeju-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeollanam-do were more vulnerable area than others. In contrast, the southern central region including Gyeonggi-do was less vulnerable than others. The vulnerable index was significantly higher in 2050s (0.5589) than in present (0.3500). This result showed that the vulnerable to the disease and pest enlarge in the future. The adaptive capacity highly contributed to the vulnerability assessment index. The daily maximum temperature of June and the daily average temperature from May to August also contributed the climate exposure index. The area of occurring sheath blight, rice leaf blast and striped rice borer was related to the system sensitivity index. The ability of water supply (readjustment area of arable land per paddy field area) and rice production technique (rice yield per hectare) were the highly contributed variables to the adaption capacity index.

Study on the Effect of a New Antiseptic Preparation ″Swi-Se-Yo″ on the Carry-Over Cocoons in Silk Reeling Process (새로 개발한 조월견방부제 ″쉬세요(Swi-Se-Yo)″의 효과에 관하여)

  • In silk reeling process the carry-over cocoons must be submerged in the reeling baths filled with reeling water and left until reopening the operation. Under the detention the carry-over cocoons are apt to decay without any antiseptic treatment. Thus an useful antiseptic for the cocoons is urgently needed, and various antseptic agents have been tested for their applicability to the process. However, such an useful agent has not been developed yet. Formalin has been the only chemical used for antisepticizing carry-over cocoons, although it has many defects as the antiseptic for the cocoons. In these circumstances, recently we newly prepared an antiseptic useful for preventing the carryover cocoons from decaying. We named the new antiseptic preparation "Swi-Se-Yo." The Korean term "Swi-Se-Yo" literally means "please take a rest". Through a series of experiments with Swi-Se-Yo we obtained the following results: 1) Swi-Se-Yo, in 0.05% aqueous solution, exerted a good antiseptic effect on the boiled Cocoons submerged in the reeling baths and the effect lasted for 45 hours. The duration of the effect is about two times longer than that of Formalin. 2) The percentage of cocoon reel ability of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo was 6% higher than that of Formalin and was equal to that of flowing cold water. 3) The percentage of raw silk yield of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo was almost equal to that of Formalin and to that of flowing cold water. 4) The quality of raw silk of the carry-over cocoons treated with Swi-Se-Yo is the same as that of flowing cold water. Besides the above favourable results, Swi-Se-Yo has many advantages as an antiseptic. Chemically it is very stable. Its antimicrobial action is very strong and the spectrum is very broad. It can be available in water-soluble powder and in small bulk. And it is not harmful to human and domestic animals. Considering these profitable properties of Swi-Se-Yo, it will have a good reputation as a carry-over cocoon antiseptic. (The chemical composition and manufacturing method of Swi-Se-Yo will be published in the near future.)

Effect of Reeling Velocity and Temperature on the Automatic Silk Reeling Process (조사속도 및 조사탕온도의 고저가 자동조사성적에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out reasonable automatic silk reeling method of the domestic cocoons Jar the improvement of its reeling ability. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The silk yield and the reelability percentage decreased according to increase of the reeling velocity and decrease of the reeling temperature. 2. The reeling tension increased according to increase of the reeling velocity and decrease of the reeling temperature. 3. The reeling accidance increased according to i I1crease of the reeling velocity and temperature. 4. In case of the automatic silk reeling with fixed denier system, the reeling velocity (90∼120m/min) md temperature (35∼45$^{\circ}C$) had no influence on the raw silk qualities. 5. As a conclusion, the reasonable reeling velocity is 3bout 120m per minutes and the bath temperature is about 40$^{\circ}C$ in the automatic silk reeling of the domestic cocoons.
