Common sowing method of italian ryegrass (IRG) has been using the backpack seed sprayer (BSS) in Korea. It has weak point including a hard work and a little sowing area. This study was conducted to find out the effects of sowing IRG using unmanned helicopter (UH) under the established rice field. We checked the labour saving of sowing IRG and the growth and yield of rice after using IRG as forage crop. Two sowing implements(using by UH and backpack seed sprayer (BSS)) were tested for the ability of sowing IRG. For proper pretreatment of IRG seeds for aerial sowing using with UH, we tested one-day soaking seeds, iron-coated seeds, coated seeds sold in stores and untreated seeds. Aerial sowing of IRG seeds using UH was tested under the speed 10 km/h and flying altitude 3~4m. We tried to confirm the effects on rice growth in a paddy field after IRG had been used as forage in mid May. In 6 hours of seeding per day, UH had a seeding area of 21.8 hectares, three times wider than BSS. UH had a decrease of about 63 percent of sowing-seed cost in comparison with BSS. In the IRG aerial sowing using UH, coating seeds had the wider sowing width of 5~6 meter than 3~4 meter untreated seeds. Residual dry matter of IRG after using forage had 4.5 ton per hectare and 20 percent of top dry matter. The amount of nitrogen remaining in residual IRG in the soil was 12 kg per hectare, and the other nutrients such as calcium and potassium was incorporated into the soil with less than 10 kg/ha. The rice yield after the harvesting IRG was 5 percent higher than that of rice single cropping. Consequently, IRG sowing using UH was effective in reducing sowing time and sowing cost compared with conventional methods and, it is considered that there is a positive effect on the rice cultivation compared to rice single cropping.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of seed mixture and nitrogen application levels on botanical composition and forage productivity in grazing pasture. Legume forage have the ability to take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into a form usable by plants. Including legumes in mixtures with grass lowers the amount of nitrogen fertilizer required to produce forages. Dry matter (DM) yield of grass-legume mixtures was more than that of grass mono-cultivated and grass+white clover+red clover mixtures was the highest as 17,391 kg/ha in legume mixture (P<0.01). The highest DM yield was in N-200 kg/ha, but it was similar between N-100 kg/ha(15,128) and N-200 kg/ha (16,017). The large decline in the proportion of grass during April to June in 2004 probably was due to the drought and summer depression in grass-legume mixtures. Grass proportions decreased by 8.2% after 2 year, and white clover was dominated in grass-white clover mixture by May 2005. Crud protein (CP) content tends to increase with increased nitrogen application level.

This study was designed to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo effects of reductive acetogens isolated from ruminants on methane mitigation, and milk performance, respectively. Four acetogens, Proteiniphilum acetatigenes DA02, P. acetatigenes GA01, Alkaliphilus crotonatoxidans GA02, and P. acetatigenes GA03 strains were isolated from ruminants and used in in vitro experiment. A control (without acetogen) and a positive group (with Eubacterium limosum ATCC 8486) were also included in in vitro experiment. Based on higher acetate as well as lower methane producing ability in in vitro trial, P. acetatigenes GA03 was used as inoculum for in vivo experiment. Holstein dairy cows (n = 14) were divided into two groups viz. control (without) and GA03 group (diet supplied with P. acetatigenes GA03 at a feed rate of 1% supplementation). Milk performance and blood parameters were checked for both groups. In in vitro, the total volatile fatty acids and acetate production were higher (p < 0.05) in all 4 isolated acetogens than the control and positive treatment. Also, all acetogens significantly lowered (p < 0.05) methane production in comparison to positive and control groups however, GA03 had the lowest (p < 0.05) methane production among 4 isolates. In in vivo, the rate of milk yield reduction was higher (p < 0.05) in the control than GA03 treated group (5.07 vs 2.4 kg). Similarly, the decrease in milk fat was also higher in control (0.14% vs 0.09%) than treatment. The somatic cell counts (SCC; ×103/mL) was decreased from 128.43 to 107.00 in acetogen treated group however, increased in control from 138.14 to 395.71. In addition, GA03 increased blood glucose and decreased non-esterified fatty acids. Our results suggest that the isolated acetogens have the potential for in vitro methane reduction and P. acetatigenes GA03 strain could be a candidate probiotic strain for improving milk yield and milk fat in lactating cows with lowering SCCs.
This environment-friendly study was conducted to investigate the effects of winter barley as cover crop on the suppression of weeds and on the growth of dry direct seeded rice. The present study clarified the effects of winter barley as a cover crop on the weed vegetation, expressed as a multiplied ratio. In cultivation quality of rice, seedling stand was ranged from 104~112 $m^{-2}$. And, seeding stand of barley was the highest seedling stand 634 unit per $m^2$ in April 10 as compared to the other seeding dates. Furthermore, the dry weight of barley seeded in April 10 was heaviest at 146g $m^{-2}$. Rice yield was in 401kg $10a^{-1}$ in the April 10, and 517kg $10a^{-1}$ in the April 30, because of increased weeds caused by a low weed control. Effects of barley cover crop at same seeding with rice was ranged from 77~87% of control. The economic effect of barley as cover crop was analyzed to be increased by low herbicide using, despite of the slight decrease in rice yield during the period.
Examination of correlation between blood compositions and economic traits is very important to improve selection accuracy and predict performance ability of Hanwoo, which may be impacted into the determination of feeding management as well as marketing places. This study was aimed to provide possible procedures of Hanwoo improvement as of early individual selection based on the phenotypic correlation between blood compositions and economic traits using 866 of Hanwoo managed at National Livestock Research Institute. Phenotypic correlation between blood compositions and economic traits was estimated for steer and bulls. BUN in steer and albumin and IGF-1 in bull were highly correlated with 24 mo of weight. Average daily gain of 21 to 24 mo was highly correlated with calcium in steer and albumin in bull. Back-fat thickness and marbling score were highly correlated with BUN in steer and bull, and meat yield index was highly correlated with calcium in steer and testosterone in bull. However, BUN, which is highly correlated with meat quality, was negatively correlated with meat yield index in steer and bull.
Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is the etiologic agent of classical swine fever, a highly contagious disease that causes significant economic losses to the swine industry. The lapinized C-strain, a widely used vaccine strain against CSFV, has low growth efficiency in cell culture, which limits the productivity in the vaccine industry. In this study, a recombinant virus derived from C-strain was constructed and subjected to continuous passaging in PK-15 cells with the goal of acquiring a high progeny virus yield. A cell-adapted virus variant, RecCpp80, had nearly 1,000-fold higher titer than its parent C-strain but lost the ability to induce fever in rabbits. Sequence analysis of cell-adapted RecC variants indicated that at least six nucleotide changes were fixed in RecCpp80. Further adaption of RecCpp80 variant in swine testicle cells led to a higher virus yield without additional mutations. Introduction of each of these residues into the wild-type RecC backbone showed that one mutation, M979R (T3310G), located in the C-terminal region of E2 might be closely related to the cell-adapted phenotype. Rabbit inoculation revealed that $RecCpp40_{+10}$ failed to induce fever in rabbits, whereas $RecCpp80_{+10}$ caused a fever response similar to the commercial C-strain vaccine. In conclusion, the C-strain can be adapted to cell culture by introducing specific mutations in its E2 protein. The mutations in RecCpp80 that led to the loss of fever response in rabbits require further investigation. Continuous passaging of the C-strain-based recombinant viruses in PK-15 cells could enhance its in vitro adaption. The non-synonymous mutations at 3310 and 3531 might play major roles in the enhanced capacity of general virus reproduction. Such findings may help design a modified C-strain for improved productivity of commercial vaccines at reduced production cost.

Antioxidant activity and related components including tocopherols, phenolic compounds and carotenoids in the corn(Zea mays L.) kernels were measured to understand effects of fertilizer application. Hybrids used were Chalok 2, a waxy corn, and Suwon 19, a dent corn. The standard fertilizer level of N-P-K was 14.5-3-6 for Chalok 2 and 17.4-3-6.9 for Suwon 19. The treatments of the fertilizer levels were the standard level, half and two fold amounts of N, P, and K, and no fertilizer. The antioxidant activity was determined by measuring electron donating ability. The antioxidant activity of Chalok 2 was higher than Suwon 19. The antioxidant activity was the highest at the standard fertilizer treatment for Chalok 2, but was statistically not significant. The antioxidant activity and the related compounds content in Suwon 19, however, were the highest in the two fold nitrogen treatment, and the differences were significant. The contents of tocopherols, phenolic compounds and carotenoids were 30.0~38.1, 104.7~118.8, $0.1{\mu}gml^{-1}$, respectively for Chalok 2 and 16.7~20.1, 59.9~72.7, $35.5{\sim}50.0{\mu}gml^{-1}$, respectively for Suwon 19. The antioxidant activity was positively correlated with the grain yield in both cultivars. The shorter the ASI the higher the yield of the plant. The difference in genetic factors would affect greater influence than fertilizer effect on the antioxidant activity of corn.

We examined the use of basic forage data and indicators of forage productivity in different regions of Korea. The productivity of winter forage crops was evaluated from mid to late May 2012 by directly collecting information from farmhouses. A survey of winter forage crop productivity was conducted with 66 farmers in 16 regions; including, Italian ryegrass (IRG) from 22 farmers in 11 regions, whole crop barley from 21 farmers in eight regions, rye from 11 farmers in five regions, and IRG mixed with whole crop barley from 12 farmers in six regions. The results indicated that the Konju region exhibited higher yields of dry matter (DM) forage (15,128 kg/ha) and that the Dangjin region (reclaimed land) showed the lowest (3,885 kg/ha). The average yield of DM forage was 9,418 kg/ha. Yields of whole crop barley and IRG mixed with whole crop barley were comparatively higher than those of rye and IRG. We conclude that overall forage productivity was influenced by farmer's cultivation ability rather than the forage cultivation environment.
