A six parent dialled analysis was conducted to get basic information for improving yield of upland cotton. Heterosis, combining ability, genetic components and correlation coefficients for boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight, lint weigth per boll and lint percentage were studied. Estimates of heterosis for all characters and heterobeltiosis for boll weight and lint weight per boll showed positive values. In general combining ability effect, 'Muan' and 'Imsung' showed highely positive effect in all characters. In specific combining ability effect, the combinations of 'Seungju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seosan${\times}$Imsung' for bll length, 'Cheju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seung${\times}$Imsung' for boll width, 'Cheju${\times}$Muan$.$Cheju${\times}$Imsung' for boll weight, 'Cheju${\times}$Soonchun$.$Muan${\times}$Imsung' for 100 seed weight, 'Soonchun${\times}$Muan' for lint weight per boll and 'Soonchun${\times}$Seosan$.$Seungju${\times}$Muan' for lint percentage showed highly positive effect. Partial dominance was observed for boll length, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll, complete dominance for boll width and overdominance for lint percentage. The number of effective gene group was estimated as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except lint percentage. Correlation coefficients among the boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll were positive, whereas lint percentage was negatively correlated with other characters.
In order to substitute sweet and super sweet maize hybrid seeds which are introduced at current, and to meet national demand for human consumption, inbreds and hybrids of waxy maize were developed by using Korean native lines, Six inbreds were used to produce 15 hybrids in a diallel cross, Six inbreds used were significantly different in tasseling dates, plant and ear heights, leaf area, and shank length, The inbred line, Bosung showed the longest shank length among the lines used, The ear characters like ear length and diameter, 100 kernel weight, row number, and kernel number per ear varied among lines, The inbred line Bosung was again significantly different from other lines in ear length and diameter, row number and 100 kernel weight. However, ]ewon had the highest kernel yield per 100. Hybrids were also different in plant and ear characteristics depending upon the inbreds used. The hybrids of Bosung showed the longest ear length and the heaviest kernel weight. Highest kernel yield per unit area was obtained by the hybrids crossed with Dangjin, The general combining ability(GCA) of Dangjin was found very effective in reducing plant and ear height of hybrids. The GCA of Jewon was very effective in increasing tiller number per plant. The inbred line Bosung was effective in increasing ear length and 100 kernel weight and in decreasing row number. The hybrid which showed the highest specific combining ability in ear length and 100 kernel weight was Jewon Chilbo.

This study was conducted to optimize the extraction conditions from cabbage by a response surface methodology. In extraction conditions based on the central composite design with variations, the ratio of solvent to sample ($10\~30$mL/g), ethanol concentration ($0\~100\%$) and extraction temperature ($35\~95^{circ}C$) coefficients of determinations ($R^2$) were 0.8162(p<0.1), 0.8173(p<0.1), 0.9374(p<0.01) and 0.9116(p<0.05) in extraction yield, electron donating ability, tyrosinase inhibition and SOD-like ability, respectively. Estimated extraction conditions for the maximizing yield, electron donating ability and SOD-like ability were $15\~30$ mL/g in ratio of solvent to sample, $40\~80\%$; ethanol concentration, and $50\~90^{\circ}C$ ; extraction temperature. Predicted values at the optimum condition (25 mL/g solvent to sample, $50\%$ ethanol concentration and $70^{\circ}C$ in extraction temperature) were in good agreement with observed values.

To evaluate the possible utilization of ginseng by-products, chemical components of ginseng residue, reducing ability of DPPH, effect of residue extract on the yeast growth, amino acid contents of yeast cell, increase of residue extract yield by enzyme treatment were studied. Alcohol and water extract residue contained 43-46% total reducing sugar and 14-15% crude protein, while alcohol extract residue had 0.18% n-BuOH extract. Water extract of alcohol extract residue had about 45% reducing ability of DPPH in comparison with that of alcohol extract from ginseng roots. Essential nutrients for the yeast growth were found in extract when Saccharomyces cerevisiae was cultured in Czapeck medium, a compound medium, with the residue. The addition of residue extract to malt medium, a natural medium, enhanced 30-40% yeast growth. And content of each amino acid in yeast cell cultured on malt medium with ginseng residue extract was much more than that of the cell cultured without ginseng extract, but amino acid composition of yeast cell did not differ from one another. The treatment of alcohol extract residue with cellulase increased 250% yield of residue extract.

Optimal extraction conditions for yield, browning color, electron donating ability, nitrite scavenging effect, total polyphenol content and tyrosinase inhibitory activity of Lyophyllum ulmarium were determined by using response surface methodology (RSM) through the central composite design. The extraction yield of Lyophyllum ulmarium was effected by ethanol concentration and browning color was improved with the increase of ethanol concentration than microwave power. The nitrite scavenging effect was improved with the increase of ethanol concentration and decrease of microwave power The electron donating ability, browning color, tyrosinase inhibitory activity and total polyphenol content were improved with the increase in ethanol concentration and microwave power. The optimal ranges of extraction conditions for effective components of Lyophyllim ulmarium were predicted as 60.05~102.75 watt of microwave power, 53.20~64.01% of ethanol concentration and 7.77 min of extraction time.
This study was performed to develop flavor materials from Elsholtzia ciliata Hylander with analyzing functionality and aroma profile and to optimize supercritical fluid extraction method and optimum condition. The qualities of water extracts such as total yield total phenolic compound electron donation ability, estragole and L-carvone, were affected by extraction pressure than time. The response variables had significant with pressure than with time and the established polynomial model was suitable(P>0.05) model by Lack-of-Fit analysis. The optimum extraction conditions which were limited of maximum value for dependent variables under experimental conditions based on central composite design were 238 bar and 42 min.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pre-heating treatment effects on the antioxidant properties of ethanolic garlic and onion extracts. Garlic and onion with or without heating ($100^{\circ}C$, 30 min) were extracted with ethanol, and the total phenolic content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, iron chelating ability, reducing power, and antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid emulsion system were evaluated. Garlic (41%) had a higher drying yield than onion (11%). Regardless of pre-heating, ethanol extracts of onion resulted in an approximately 25-fold higher yield than those of garlic. Thermal treatment before extraction decreased the levels of ethanol-soluble phenolics for both garlic and onion. Regardless of pre-heating, the radical scavenging abilities of ethanol extracts from garlic were greater than the ethanol extracts from onion. The iron chelating abilities of ethanol extracts from fresh and heated garlic were 85 and 81% at 10 mg/mL, respectively, whereas those of onion extracts were 10 and 9% at the same concentration, respectively. However, no differences in reducing power between garlic and onion extracts were observed. Both garlic and onion inhibited the formation of hydroperoxide in linoleic acid emulsion systems when ethanol was used as a solvent. Overall, garlic extracts had greater antioxidant activity than onion extracts, and the antioxidant activity of garlic and onion extracts were not significantly affected by thermal treatment.
