This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts on lipid metabolism. Sprague-Dawley male rats$(110{\pm}10g)$ were fed on containing normal and high fat diets. They were orally administrated(0.02g/100g B.W.) of Quercus aculissima CARRUTHERS ethylacetate-extract and water-extract at the same time once a day respectively. The rats were sacrificed after 6 weeks of feeding periods. In high fat diet group, liver and heart weight were increased but kidney weight was decreased. Contents of total lipid, triglyceride and phospholipid were increased in high fat diet groups. But the degree of increment was reduced by administration of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts and water extract was more effective. Significant decrease in serum total lipid content by administration Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts was not due to decrease of triglyceride content but total cholesterol content. Whereas HDL-cholesterol content was significantly decreased in high fat diet group and improved by administration of Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts. Total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol contents in liver were also increased in high fat diet group but phospholipid content was significantly decreased. The results indicate that Quercus acutissima CARRUTHERS extracts were effective in preventing hyperlipidemia and water extract was more effective.

Physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics of omija wines made by traditional method, adding grape juice and sugar solution periodically, and with dry omija were compared. The pH values of all omija wines were ranged $2{\sim}3$ during fermentation. The acidity value of omija wine made by traditional method was 2.5%, that of omija wine made by adding grape juice and sugar solution periodically decreased from 3.3% to 0.8%, and that of omija wine made with dry omija increased from 0.2% to 3.9%. Sucrose and alcohol contents were $6.5{\sim}34.5^{\circ}Brix$ and 12% at the end of fermentation, respectively. The viable cell numbers of yeast decreased from $5.7{\sim}6.9\;\log\;CFU/mL$ to $4.3{\sim}4.6\;\log\;CFU/mL$. Omija wine made by adding grape juice and sugar solution periodically had the highest sensory scores for color, taste, flavor, swallowing, and overall acceptability, and was significantly different from the both omija wines made by traditional method and with dry omija. Because omija is rarely fermented due to the little fermentative sugar content, omija wine made by adding grape juice and sugar solution periodically was shown to be the most appropriate.
The aims of this study were to evaluate the anti-obese effects of pine needle, black tea and green tea in rats and overweight people. Supplementation of 1, 2, 4 and 8% amount to the control diet of pine needle extract and mixture groups significantly decreased body weight gain and visceral fat mass compared with that of control diet group. Supplementation of 1, 2 and 4% amount to the control diet of black and green tea extracts groups significantly decreased body weight gain and visceral fat mass compared with that of control diet group. Anti-obese effect in body weight gain and visceral fat mass of mixture group was higher than in other groups. In human study, extracts mixture supplementation to overweight subjects significantly decreased both body weight and body fat compared with placebo control group. In vitro study, black and green tea extracts significantly inhibited both the pancreatic lipase and ${\alpha}-amylase$ activities dose dependently. In conclusion, the anti-obese effects of pine needle, black, and green teas in rats were found. In overweight human subjects, extracts mixture decreased body weight and body fat compared with placebo control group. Anti-obese effect in black and green tea groups might be from an decrease in carbohydrate and fat digestions via inhibition of pancreatic ${\alpha}-amylase$ and lipase activities in part.
This study investigated the carcass characteristics and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content in Hanwoo steers that received supplementary rice bran (Rice bran group) and roasted soybeans (Roasted soybean group) into their finishing concentrates. The final body weight was 754.58, 783.33, and 755.67 kg, and the average daily gain was 0.50, 0.57, and 0.50 kg for the Control, Rice bran, and Roasted soybean group, respectively, showing no statistical differences. Feed requirements for the Rice bran group were 14.5% higher than the Control and 12.8% higher than the Roasted soybean group. No statistical differences were found in indices for carcass yield and quality grade between the groups. The composition of c9, t11 CLA in perirenal fats was significantly higher in the Roasted soybean group (0.21%) compared to the Rice bran group (0.15%) and Control (0.16%) groups (p<0.05). The composition of c9, t11 CLA in the M. Longissimus dorsi was also higher in the Roasted soybean group (0.21%) compared to the Control (0.16%) group. The composition of t10, c12 CLA in the M. Longissimus dorsi was statistically lower in the Roasted soybean group compared to the Control group (p<0.05). In perirenal fats, the composition of t11 trans-vaccenic acid (TVA) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the Roasted soybean group compared to the control group. The TVA composition in the Roasted soybean group increased to 15.09 and 6.92%, respectively, in subcutaneous and M. Longissimus dorsi fats comparing to the Control group, without statistical differences between the treatment groups. In conclusion, rice bran is beneficial for improving feed efficiencies, while roasted soybeans are effective for increasing CLA in the M. Longissimus dorsi of Hanwoo steers.
This study was attempted aimed to prepare of Andong sikhe by pure culture inoculation and to improve storage stability by the addition of stabilizers to the product. Lactobacillus delbreuckii was selected for pure culture inoculation in the fermentation. The effect of stabilizers on the sedimentation, sensory evaluation and viscosity of Sikhe were investigated during the fermentation of traditional Andong Sikhe stored at $4^{\circ}C$ Morphological characteristics of Sikhe were determined by scanning electromicrograpy. Among the stabilizers added to the traditional Andong sikhe Na-alginate was found to be best stabilizers. When the product was evaluated by the sensory panel, the addition of stabilizers up to 0.1% level actually increased the acceptability of the product, while the concentration of more than 0.2% stabilizers affected the acceptability of the negatively. Sikhe added Na-carboxymethyl cellulose and Na-alginate showed highest viscosity on the 2nd day of fermentation, while homogenized Andong sikhe with Carrageenan showed the highest peak in viscosity on the first day of fermentation. Lactic acid bacterial count reached to $3.2{\times}10^8/ml$ after 20 days of storage. The surface and cross section of rice was observed by scanning electron microscope. As the fermentation proceeded holes on the surface increased, and nearly empty cell wall remained at the later stage of fermentation. Use of pure cultured inoculum of L. delbreuckii supported the rapid build up of the lactic acid bacteria and consequently the whole process of the fermentation was shortened. The acceptability and product quality were improved by use of L. delbreuckii inoculum.

We investigate BER (Bit Error Ratio) performance according to the gain of spatial and frequency diversities in uplink SC-FDMA of SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output) systems. The main results of the analysis in this paper are as follows. First, we prove that performance of integrated system for considering spatial and frequency diversity combining in parallel is equivalent with the performance of sequential system for performing diversity combining in sequence. By signal modeling, it is demonstrated that the performances of both systems are the same when the frequency diversity combining technique of the sequential system is equal to diversity combining technique of the integrated system, and spatial diversity combining technique of the sequential system is performed as MRC in advance of frequency diversity combining. Secondly, it is found that effect on the BER performance is different according to the gain of spatial and frequency diversities, respectively. The frequency diversity gain increases by increasing the number of subcarrier. It might affect the performance improvement of high SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) while it maintains gap between performances of ZF(Zero Forcing) and MMSE(Minimum Mean Square Error) in frequency diversity combining schemes. Also, spatial diversity gain increases as the number of receiving antennas increases. It means that it can reduce performance gap between ZF and MMSE in frequency diversity combining schemes by increasing the number of receiving antennas. In addition, it might affect the performance improvement of the whole SNR. Finally, through the analysis of performance according to the spatial diversity gain, the performance of ZF in frequency diversity combining is equal to the MMSE if the number of receiving antennas is 6 or more.
Background: Nasal applied continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP) is a highly effective method of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. More than a decade of accumulated experience with this treatment modality confirmed that it is unquestionably the medical treatment of choice for patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. However it takes long time to reach optimal CPAP pressure. To save the time to reach optimal pressure, it is necessary to clarify the time to reach optimal pressure for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Method: CPAP pressure is titrated during an overnight study according to a standardized protocol. Just before the presleep bio-calibration procedures, the technician applies the nasal mask and switches on the clinical CPAP unit. Initial positive for pressure is typically 3.0 centimeters of water pressure. After sleep onset, the technician gradually increases the pressure until sleep-disordered breathing events disappear or become minimal. The pressure must maintain maximal airway patency during both NREM and REM sleep to be considered effective. Before recommending a final pressure setting, sleep recording and oximetry data are reviewed by an American Board of Sleep Medicine certified Sleep Specialist and a Registrered Polysomnographic Technologist. Results: We examined the time required to reach optimal pressure during routine CPAP titration in 127 consecutively evaluated individuals diagnosed with sleep-disordered breathing. Results indicate that 33% of patients required more than four hours to attain satisfactory titration. This indicates that a four-hour session is marginally enough time, at best, to determine a proper CPAP pressure setting. Moreover, 60 of 127 patients required further adjustment after optimal pressure was reached. These additional pressure trials were needed to confirm that higher pressures were not superior for eliminating sleep-disordered breathing events. Conclusions: The data presented underscore the logistical difficulty of titrating CPAP during split-night studies without modifying the titration procedure. Futhermore, the time needed to reach optimal pressure makes it improbable that proper CPAP titration can be performed during a 2-3 hour nap study.

Despite numerous studies regarding overweight or obese children, only a limited number of studies have investigated the effect of underweight. The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of underweight among school-aged children. A total of 493 students (86 underweight and 407 normal weight students) aged 11 to 13 years were included in our study. Socio-demographic characteristics, eating habits, health information, self-perception of weight, weight-control efforts and birth-related information were collected by using survey questionnaires for children and parents. Dietary information was obtained by two 24-hour food records, which were completed by both children and their parents. The prevalence of underweight was significantly higher in girls than boys, and the frequency of medical treatment and flu symptoms were higher in underweight children than normal ones. Overall, girls tended to overestimate their own weight; this misclassification was greater among underweight girls. Birthweight was positively correlated with current weight (P<0.05) and height (P<0.01) in girls, but these correlations were not seen in boys. In conclusion, underweight girls had inappropriate self-perception of weight, and underweight in girls may be related with birthweight and inadequate dietary intakes. Therefore, it is important to build a well-designed framework that integrates efforts of home, school, and community to maintain a healthy weight with balanced diet and exercise throughout the lifetime.
Toxicities to many organs caused by humidifier disinfectants have been reported. Recently, humidifier disinfectants have been reported to cause cardiovascular, embryonic, and hepatic toxicities. This study was designed to investigate the toxic mechanism of humidifier disinfectants and compare toxicity in a cellular model and a zebrafish animal model. Because brain toxicity and skin toxicity have been less studied than other organs, we evaluated toxicity in a human dermal cell line and zebrafish under various concentrations of humidifier disinfectants that included polyhexamethyleneguanidine phosphate (PHMG), oligo-[2-(2-ethoxy)-ethoxyethyl-guanidinium-chloride] (PGH) and methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT). A human dermal fibroblast cell line was treated with disinfectants (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16 mg L-1) to compare their cytotoxicity. The fewest PHMG-treated cells survived (up to 33%), while 49% and 40% of the PGH- and CMIT/MIT-treated cells, respectively, survived. The quantification of oxidized species in the media revealed that the PHMG-treated cells had the highest MDA content of around 28 nM, while the PGH- and CMIT/MIT-treated cells had 13 and 21 nM MDA, respectively. As for brain toxicity, treatment of the zebrafish tank water with CMIT/MIT (final 40 mg L-1) for 30 min resulted in a 17-fold higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than in the control. Treatment with PGH or PHMG (final 40 mg L-1) resulted in 15- and 11-fold higher production, respectively. The humidifier disinfectants (PHMG, PGH, and CMIT/MIT) showed severe dermal cell toxicity and brain toxicity. These toxicities may be relevant factors in understanding why some children have language disorders, motor delays, and developmental delays from exposure to humidifier disinfectants.

We investigated melting points and sensory characteristics by adding rice bran and roasted soybean to the finishing diet of Hanwoo steers. Thirty-six Hanwoo steers (average age, 20.92 mon-old; average weight, 599.89 kg) were assigned to either Control, Treatment 1 (rice bran) or Treatment 2 (roasted soybean) groups (12 steers/group), considering body weight and age. Supplementation levels of rice bran and roasted soybean were determined to meet total 5% crude fat in the concentrates, and the experimental animals were fed for 314 d until they reached 31.2 mon old. No significant differences were found in the moisture and crude fat content among groups. Melting points of lipid extracted from M. longissimus dorsi, subcutaneous fat, and perirenal fats were 25.83-26.17, 17.26-18.53 and $32.40-33.15^{\circ}C$, respectively, resulting in remarkable differences depending on fat depots. Contents of free amino acids in M. longissimus dorsi related to sweet taste were 39.48 mg/100 g for Treatment 1, which was significantly (p<0.05) higher than those for Control (32.24 mg/100 g), whereas those related to bitter taste were 25.93 mg/100 g for Treatment 2, which was the lowest (p<0.05) among the groups. Fatty acid composition, such as $C_{14:0}$, $C_{16:0}$, $C_{16:1}$, $C_{18:0}$, and $C_{18:1}$, in M. longissimus dorsi was not different among the groups. Results of a panel test on M. longissimus dorsi showed that Treatment 1 scored the highest (p<0.05) in juiciness, and both Treatments 1 and 2 scored higher (p< 0.05) in overall palatability than the Control group. $C_{18:1}$ showed a positive (+) relationship with tenderness (r = 0.650; p<0.05), and $C_{18:0}$ with flavor (0.698; p<0.05). The results suggest that rice bran and roasted soybean are beneficial for improving M. longissimus dorsi sensory characteristics, whereas no significant differences were found in the physico-chemical characteristics among the groups.
