To investigate the source-receptor relationships aerosol model has been used to simulate the distribution behavior of the yellow sand. Data for meteorological fields were obtained by Meso-scale Analysis and Prediction Model System/Seoul National University (MAPMS/SNU) for five days (10-14 April 1988). To obtain the distributions of concentration of yellow sand, the aerosol model has been modified to allow quantifications of relative concentration distributions of yellow sand. Source regions of yellow sand were delineated by soil maps of China and emission rate as a function of wind stress(Westphal et al., 1987). Using 3-dimensional wind fields the backward trajectories from 3 receptor grids at the layer of .sigma. =0.95, 0.9, 0.85, 0.8 were calculated. In order to facilitate quantitative assessment of source-receptor relationships, it was assumed that the perturbations in along-trajectory and cross-trajectory proceed linearly with time, in accord with Gaussian distribution characteristics. On the basis of this assumption, the probability fields were calculated from every grid point with source strength 1. Using these probability fields and emission retes, the potential contributions of upstream sources along the trajectories were estimated. The results of this study indicate that the application of trajectory modeling is useful in investigating the quantitative relationship between source and receptor regions.

The chemical composition of PM$_{2.5}$ was measured at Gosan, Jeju for two weeks each in November 2001 and spring 2002. In the latter part of the measurement period of November 2001, designated as the polluted period in this work, secondarily formed ion components as well as primarily emitted elemental carbon were high. PM$_{2.5}$ mass concentration was also high in this polluted period compared with the yellow sand period, in which daily average of PM $_{10}$ peaked up to 520 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. Increase of major components of anthropogenic origin in the polluted period was not correlated with the variation in sea salt components while increase of crustal components in the yellow sand period was highly correlated with the variation in sea salt components. Trace elements were generally higher in the yellow sand period; however, toxic heavy metals such as zinc, cadmium and lead were the highest in the polluted period.d.d.d.

In order to characterize the distribution patterns of PAHs between Yellow Sand (YS) and non-Yellow Sand(NYS) periods, we collected and analyzed aerosol samples for PAHs for the periods covering 28 March through 24 April 2000. The concentrations of TSP measured during the YS periods were approximately two times higher than the NYS periods. By contrast, the concentrations of PAHs during YS were higher than those of NYS by 140%. In ad-dition, their concentrations in PM 10 were larger than those TSP by 120% . Detailed inspections of our data indi-catd that three species including chrysene. benzo(b)fluoranthene, and benzo(k)fluoranthene were effeciently ad-sorbed by particles less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter and that there were dominating the distribution characterstics of PAHs during the YS periods. Results of correlation analysis also indicated that PAHs exhibited strong correlations with those pollutants originating from combustion sources. It is thus concluded that pollutants such as toxic PAHs that originate from diverse anthropogenic sources of China should be contributing to the degradation of the ambient air quality in Seoul.

The size-resolved number concentrations of aerosols ranging from 0.3 to 25 $mu extrm{m}$ were observed in Seoul and Anmyondo in the west coast of Korea during an Yellow Sand phenomenon in April 1998. Number size distributions of aerosols observed in both places are characterized by decrease in small particles of diameter less than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and increase in large size between 1.35 and 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in heavy dust period. For particles in this size range, there was a good correlation between number concentrations observed in both places during the Yellow Sand episode. On the other hand, the number of small particles less than 0.82${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ decreased, but the correlation between these particles in both places was enhanced during more intense dust period. The number of coarse particle larger than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed a distince diurnal variation without a significant change in amplitude, which was more visible in Seoul. It suggests that these coarse particles were more affected by local sources. Form these results, it was range of 1~10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ originated possibly from the dust source regions and the source signature depended on the degree of dust intensity.
The detection of yellow sand dust using satellite has been utilized from various bands from ultraviolet to infrared channels. Among them, Infrared channels have an advantage of detecting aerosols over high reflecting surface as well as during nighttime. Especially, brightness temperature difference between 11 and 12{\mu}m(BTD) was often used to distinguish between water cloud and yellow sand, because Ice and liquid water particles preferentially absorb longer wavelengths while aerosol particles preferentially absorb shorter wavelengths. We have found that the BTD significantly depends on surface temperature, emissivity, and zenith angle and thereby the threshold of BTD. In order to overcome these problems, we have constructed the background brightness temperature threshold of BTD and then subtracted it from BTD. Along with this, we utilized high temporal coverage of geostationary satellite, MTSAT-1R, to verify the reliability of the retrieved signal in conjunction with forecasted wind information. The statistical score test illustrated that this newly developed algorithm showed a promising result for detecting mineral dust by reducing the errors in the current BTD method.
An algorithm for detection of yellow sand aerosols has been developed with infrared bands from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-functional Transport Satellite-1 Replacement (MTSAT-1R) data. The algorithm is the hybrid algorithm that has used two methods combined together. The first method used the differential absorption in brightness temperature difference between $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$ (BTD1). The radiation at 11 ${\mu}m$ is absorbed more than at 12 ${\mu}m$ when yellow sand is loaded in the atmosphere, whereas it will be the other way around when cloud is present. The second method uses the brightness temperature difference between $3.7{\mu}m$ and $11{\mu}m$ (BTD2). The technique would be most sensitive to dust loading during the day when the BTD2 is enhanced by reflection of $3.7{\mu}m$ solar radiation. We have applied the three methods to MTSAT-1R for derivation of the yellow sand dust and in conjunction with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), a form of eigenvector statistical analysis. As produced Principle Component Image (PCI) through the PCA is the correlation between BTD1 and BTD2, errors of about 10% that have a low correlation are eliminated for aerosol detection. For the region of aerosol detection, aerosol index (AI) is produced to the scale of BTD1 and BTD2 values over land and ocean respectively. AI shows better results for yellow sand detection in comparison with the results from individual method. The comparison between AI and OMI aerosol index (AI) shows remarkable good correlations during daytime and relatively good correlations over the land.

The long-range transport mechanisms of Asian dust were analyzed based on the synoptic weather system and numerical simulation by using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and TOMS data during the periods of 1996-2001. We classified the whole weather types of eastern Asia during spring and created the representative weather types during the yellow sand events using cluster analysis and weather charts for the last 6 years(1996~2001). These long-range transport mechanisms were related to various pressure patterns including high and low, trough and ridge, and upper-level fronts. Case studies of the yellow sand events have performed by the simulation of MM5 with meteorological elements such as the horizontal wind of u and v component, potential temperature, potential vorticity, and vertical circulation during the episodic days(2~8 March 2001). In addition, the origin of the long-range transport was examined with the estimation of backward trajectory using HYSPLIT4 Model. In this paper, we concluded that three weather types at 1000 hPa, 850 hPa, 500 hPa, and 300 hPa levels were classified respectively. The dominant features were the extending continental outflow from China to Korea at 1000 hPa and 850 hPa levels, the deep trough passage and cold advection at 500 hPa and 300 hPa levels during the yellow sand events. And also, we confirmed the existence of pola $r_tropical jets in the upper-level, the behavior of potential vorticity over Korea, the estimation of potential vorticity through vertical cross section, and the transport of yellow sand through backward trajectories.es.
In an effort to interpret the characteristics of fine particle concentrations in Busan, time variations of hourly monitored concentrations $PM_{10}$ (Particulate Matter with aerodynamic Diameter ${\le}10\;{\mu}m$) in Busan are analyzed for the period from 2000 to 2005. The characteristics of aerosol second generation formation process is also interpreted qualitatively, by using the statistical analysis of the meteorological variables including temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. The result shows some significant annual, seasonal, weekly and diurnal variations of $PM_{10}$ concentrations. In particular, seasonal(i.e., spring) variations are governed by frequency of yellow sand events even for the non-yellow sand cases where yellow-sand days are eliminated in our analysis. However, in seasonal variation, summer season predominate lower $PM_{10}$ concentrations due to the frequent precipitation, and weekly and diurnal variations are both found to be reflecting the emission rate from traffic amount. Correlation coefficients between $PM_{10}$ concentration and meterological variables for non-yellow sand days show overall negative correlation with visibility, wind speed, cloud amounts, and relative humidity. However for non-precipitation days, during non-yellow sand period positive correlation are found clearly with relative humidity, suggesting the importance of secondary aerosol formation in Busan that can be achieved by both homogeneous aerosol formation and heterogeneous transformations resulting from hygroscopic aerosol characteristics.
A geochemical technique based on rare earth element geochemistry was used to clarity the source of the Asian dust (Yellow sand) in the Daejeon area. The Asian dusts were collected 4 times during 31th March- 2nd April and 25th May-27th May 2007. The Yellow sand shows PAAS (Post Archean Australian Shale)-normalized REE pattern of the flattened LREE and slightly depleted LREE without Eu anomaly, whereas the Daejeon soil has slightly enriched LREE and depleted HREE with negative Eu anomaly. Our results show that REE patterns of the Asian dust are LREE-flattened similar to those of the sediment from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert. This suggests that Asian dust in the Daejeon area might be derived from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert.

Yellow sands often occur in Korea during April and May each year, and they are believed to come from the Mongolian Gobi desert as the snow starts to melt in Spring time. Since the analysis of aerosol particulates can hardly distinguish the origin of particulates, the isentropic analysis of meteorological data is often used for the trajectories of the long range transport of yellows sand or air pollutants. The yellow sand case of April 9 $\sim$ 15, 1988, in Korea is analyzed for the identification of long range transport of yellow sands and their trajectories in East Asia, using isentropic analyses. We have tranformed the ECMWF grid data, analyzed in pressure coordinates, into the isentropic coordinates and then have traced the 286 K and 290 K air mass which started Gobi desert. The result shows the transport of yellow sands from the Gobi desert to the Korean peninsula.
