  • Dy3+- and Eu3+-codoped BaWO4 phosphors for white light-emitting diode were synthesized with different activator ions via a solid-state reaction process. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the BaWO4:Dy3+,Eu3+ phosphors were investigated as a function of Eu3+ concentration at a fixed concentration of Dy3+ ions. XRD patterns exhibited that all the synthesized phosphors had a tetragonal system, irrespective of the concentrations of Dy3+ and Eu3+ ions. The excitation spectra of the synthesized phosphors were composed of three intense bands centered at 251, 355, and 393 nm and several weak peaks. For the BaWO4:Dy3+,Eu3+ phosphors synthesized with 1 mol% of Eu3+, the emission spectra under ultraviolet excitation at 393 nm showed two strong blue and yellow bands at 485 and 577 nm corresponding to the 4F9/26H15/2 and 4F9/26H13/2 transitions of Dy3+ ions, respectively and several weak bands in the range of 600-700 nm resulting from the 4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. As the concentration of Eu3+ ions increased, intensities of the blue and yellow emission bands gradually decreased while those of the red emissions increased rapidly and the energy transfer efficiency from Dy3+ to Eu3+ ions was 95.3% at 20 mol% of Eu3+. The optimum white light emission with x=0.363, y=0.357 CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates was obtained for the sample doped with 5 mol% Dy3+ and 1 mol% of Eu3+.

  • Single-phase yellow phosphor, $CaGd_{2-x}ZrSc(AlO_4)_3:xCe^{3+}$ ($CGZSA:Ce^{3+}$), possessing cubic symmetry with varied $Ce^{3+}$ concentrations, was synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), excitation spectra, emission spectra, thermal quenching, and decay curves. The cubic phase of $CGZSA:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor was confirmed via XRD analysis. The photoluminescence spectra of $CGZSA:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor demonstrated that the phosphor could be excited at the wavelength of 440 nm; a broad yellow emission band was centered at 541 nm. These results indicate that the phosphors are adequately excited by blue light and have the potential to function as yellow-emitting phosphors for applications in white light-emitting diodes.

  • $NaCaGd(MoO_4)_3:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ ternary molybdates were successfully synthesized by microwave sol-gel method for the first time. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $3-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC intensities of the doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions based on the combination of strong emission bands at the 520-nm and 630-nm emission bands in the green and red spectral regions, respectively. The strong 520-nm emission band in the green region corresponds to the $^5S_2/^5F_4{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition of $Ho^{3+}$ ions, while the strong 630-nm emission band in the red region appears to be due to the $^5F_5{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition of the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The optimal $Yb^{3+}:Ho^{3+}$ ratio was found at 9:1, as indicated by the composition-dependent quenching effect of $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The pump power dependence of the upconversion emission intensity and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of the phosphors were evaluated in detail.

  • $NaY_{1-x}(WO_4)_2:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphors with doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}=0.05$, 0.1, 0.2, and $Yb^{3+}=0.2$, 0.45) were successfully synthesized via the cyclic microwave-modified sol-gel route; their upconversion properties were investigated. Well-crystallized particles showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $2-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the synthesized particles exhibited yellow emissions based on a strong 550-nm emission band in the green region and a very strong 655-nm emission band in the red region. The Raman spectra of the doped particles indicated the domination of strong peaks at higher and lower frequencies induced by the incorporation of the $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ elements into the $Y^{3+}$ sites in the crystal lattice, which resulted in unit cell shrinkage that accompanied a new phase formation of the $WO_{4-x}$ group.

  • $NaCaLa_{1-x}(MoO_4)_3:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ ternary molybdates with proper doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ (x = $Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}$ = 0.05 and $Yb^{3+}$ = 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were successfully synthesized by microwave sol-gel method. The optimal $Yb^{3+}:Ho{3+}$ ratios were obtained at 9:1 and 10:1, as indicated by the composition-dependent quenching effect of the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. • In this paper, the fabrication of a white light-emitting diode (WLED) package capable of producing different color rendering indexes (CRI ($R_a$)) using different types of phosphors (YAG:Ce, Silicate, Nitride, LuAG) for the LEDs is presented. The color quality is evaluated based on the current and temperature variation conditions. The evaluation method for color quality compares the existing CIE 13.3 method and the new IES TM-30-15 method. The CRI ($R_a$) defined in the conventional CIE 13.3 has the disadvantage. This cannot offer any information relevant to the user's preference. However, the newly proposed IES TM-30-15 method suggests the additional measure related to user's preference such as Color Gamut ($R_g$). The present experimental results obtained using the IES TM-30-15 show that the color quality of the WLEDs using green and red phosphors are better than that of the WLEDs using yellow phosphor, but their luminous efficacies are lower. The color quality of WLEDs using green and red phosphors are more stable than that of the WLEDs using yellow phosphor, for current and temperature variations, and it is verified that the phosphor causes this change. The evaluation method for color quality, based on IES TM-30-15, is proved to be capable of overcoming the problems of the existing evaluation methods by this study.

  • series of Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors have a strong absorption in region from 430 nm to 470 nm. The emission peaks of CaS:Ce are located at 510 nm and 570 nm. The partial replacement of Ca by Sr in Ca1-xSrxS:Ce causes a blue shift of emission wavelengths. The Ca1-xSrxS:Ce can be used as bluish green and yellow emitting phosphors for white light emitting diodes (LEDs) pumped by the blue LED. We reported the optical properties of Ca1-xSrxS:Ce phosphors for application in phosphor converted white LEDs.

  • We have investigated the optical and electrical properties of surface mounted white light emitting diode (LED) chips prepared by using yellow phosphors on the blue LED chip. The yellow phosphor mixed with transparent epoxy was coated on the prepared LED chip. The optimum mixing conditions with epoxy and yellow phosphor is obtained at the mixing ratio of epoxy:yellow phosphor = 97:3 wt%. The maximum luminance and light emitting efficiency are above $80,000cd/m^2$ and 23.2 lm/W, respectively, at the bias voltage of 2.9 V. There was no distinct change in the luminance strength with changing of the yellow phosphor ratios. The current of the white LED chip is about 30 mA at 2.9 V.
