  • Dyeing properties of sargent cherry of Prunus sargentii Rehder were investigated with silk fabrics. The absorbed wave lengths at UV-VIS spectrometer were 362nm, 386nm, 430nm, and 512nm. The K/S value showed high in following conditions: 100%(w/w) stock solution, 60 minutes of dyeing time, 80$^{\circ}C$ of dyeing temperature, and 5 times of dyeing repetition. The K/S value showed higher in post-mordant than in pre-mordant, and the change of color did not appear in pre-mordant samples. They were colored greenish yellow in post-mordanted Cu and Fe. The highest dyeability and $\Delta$E showed in post-mordanted Fe. The light fastness showed 3-4 in post-mordanted Fe, 1-2 in pre-mordanted Al, and washing and perspiration fastnesses showed also good results in post-mordanted Fe.

  • An oxyfluoride glass ceramic containing Eu2+-doped nepheline and LaF3 crystals was modified, with BaF2 replacing LaF3 up to 20 mole percent, and its luminescence change was monitored. With increasing BaF2 content, the greenish yellow emission centered at 540 nm under 400-nm excitation decreased, and a new afterglow emission from the modified ceramic was observed after removal of the excitation light source. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) were used to investigate the changes in the crystalline phases within the glass matrix. Time dependent emission intensity was monitored to observe the afterglow, and the possible mechanism for the afterglow due to BaF2 addition was considered.

  • This study was performed to investigate the related dietary factors associated with hypercholesterolemia in postmenopausal Korean women. The study sample comprised 455 postmenopausal women aged40 $\leq$ < 65. The hypercholesterolemic (serum cholesterol $\geq$240mg/dl group (N = 82) showed significantly higher BMI and waist circumference compared to the normal group (N = 373). However, both group did not show any significant difference in energy intake but hypercholesterolemic group demonstrated significantly lower intakes of fat and vitamin A with higher intake of vitamin C. Significant dietary factors associated with the higher risk of hypercholesterolemia included consumption frequencies of light color vegetable more than 3.79times/day (OR = 4.62 ; $95\%$ CI : 2.96 - 7.22), dried squid more than 0.08time/day (OR = 1.63 ; $95\%$ CI : 1.13 - 2.35), and beer more than 0.03time/day (OR = 1.57 ; $95\%$ CI : 1.01-2.43). Whereas consumption frequency of yellow and green leafy vegetables more than 1 time per day was associated with the significantly lower risk of hypercholesterolemia (OR = 0.06 ; 95 CI : 0.038 - 0.101). • Purpose: To evaluate blue light hazards of LED lightings in an optical store with blue light radiance used as the quantitative indicators of photobiological hazard. Methods: The spectral radiance of each LED lightings was measured, and blue-light radiance and the corresponding maximum exposure time were calculated. Then each LED lighting was classified according to the risk group from IEC 62471 standard. Results: The yellow LED lightings used in showcases and white LED lightings used on ceilings and logo were classified into risk group RG0. But the white LED lightings used on showcases were classified into risk group RG1. The blue light radiances of white LED lightings used in showcases are dozens of times larger than that of fluorescent lamp. Conclusions: Using the value of the blue light radiance could quantitatively express the blue light hazard to various lightings. It was confirmed that white LED lightings for the showcases had high blue light hazards because of their high luminance and color temperature. Therefore, when replacing lightings in optical shop it is necessary to select the appropriate brightness and color temperature for eye health in the long term.

  • The dyeing properties of protein fiber with pine needles colorants were studied through an investigation of the effect of dyeing conditions such as dye concentration, dyeing temperatures and time on dye uptakes, effect of mordants, and color change. In addition, the various colorfastness of dyed silk and wool fabrics were evaluated for practical use. The antimicrobial ability, ultraviolet-cut ability, and deodorant ability were also estimated. The dye uptake increased as the dyeing concentration increased and this enabled the obtainment of the Langmuir absorption isotherm. The dye uptake increased as the dyeing time and temperature increased. Pine needles colorants showed relatively good affinity to protein fiber and produced a yellow color. Post-mordanting was more effective than the pre-mordanting, and the dye uptake of fabrics improved by mordanting. Except for washing, the colorfastness of dyed fabrics showed a low rating. However, the colorfastness to light and the dry cleaning of fabrics mordanted with N.Cu, and the friction fastness of fabrics mordanted with Cu improved. The guide fabrics showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%; in addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in fabrics dyed with pine needles extracts.

  • To develop natural dyeing materials from the unused plant materials, we had several dyeing experiments to investigate the optimum conditions of dyeing fabrics with the dyebath extracted from wisteria. Dyeing experiments were done under different dyeing conditions of dyeing temperature, pH of dyebath, dyeing time, concentration of dyebath and mordant treatment which were treated after dyeing. Experimental fabrics were silk, wool, cotton, ramie and hemp. Color difference(ΔE) and Munsell's HV/C of the dyed fabrics and color fastness of silk and cotton fabrics to dry cleaning, washing, rubbing, perspiration and light were measured. In silk and wool fabrics(non mordant, dyeing time-20min), color differences increased in case of dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, but in cotton, ramie and hemp fabrics, color differences did not increase. Without mordant treatment, color differences of all experimental fabrics were about 10-20, so in wisteria dyeing mordant treatment was necessary. Color differences were increased by the mordant treatment; the color of dyed fabrics with Al mordant is dull yellow, Cu mordant is gold and Fe mordant is olive tone. Color difference was not affected by pH of dyebath in all experimental fabrics. On the whole, the color fastness of dyed silk and cotton fabrics were good, but color fastness to washing and perspiration in Fe mordant was weak and improved in Cu mordant.

  • Glasses of Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system were prepared and ion-exchange characteristics change of properties and bactericidal effects by Na+↔Ag+ ion exchange were studied. Parent glasses with three compositions of varying Na2O in the 20~30 wt% were ion-exchanged in the molten salt of 2 mol% AgNO3+98 mol% NaNO3 at 320~36$0^{\circ}C$ for 15~16min. Amount of ion exchange and penetration depth of Ag+ ion increased with Na2O content in the parent glass ion exchange temperature and time. After ion exchange densities and Vickers hardness of the glasses increased and the glasses showed yellow-brown color and as amount of ion exchange increased the color turned deep because partial reduction and agglomeration of Ag+ into Ag0 results in absorption of visible light. After ion exchange chemical durability of the glass to wter was enhanced compara-bly that weight loss and change of surface of the glass were not found for the leaching test in 5$0^{\circ}C$ K.I water for 240hrs. Bactericidal effect of ion exchanged glass on Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli was determined by microorganism test and bactericidal effect increased with amount of ion exchange and incubation time.

  • The purpose of this study was to increase uv-cut ability of cotton, ramie, and rayon fabrics dyed with safflower red colorants. For this purpose, samples treated with uv-cut agent and tannic acid were compared with the untreated samples after ultraviolet(uv)-light exposure in terms of K/S value, color changes(${\Delta}E$), SEM, and tensile strength retention. K/S value rapidly decreased with increasing exposure time, but K/S value of the samples treated with both uv-cut agent and tannic acid decreased less than that of untreated samples. As increasing exposure time, $L^*$ and $b^*$ increased, $a^*$ decreased, and so ${\Delta}E$ increased, indicating less red character and more yellow character in color. This leads to change hue, value and chroma value. But color change of samples treated with both uv-cut agent and tannic acid was less than that of untreated samples. SEM pictures showed a severe degradation by uv exposure in all samples. Tensile strength slowly decreased for 21 days. And after this point, the decreased proceeded more rapidly. Tensile strength retention of the samples treated with uv-cut agent and tannic acid was higher than that of untreated samples.
