This paper shows the development process of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe for measuring three-dimensional flow velocity components. The data reduction method using a bi-cubic curve-fitting program in a new calibration map was introduced in this study. This new calibration map can be applied up to the application angle, ${\pm}55^{\circ}$ of a probe. As a result, for the application angle of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$, an error for yaw and pitch angles appeared from $-1.76^{\circ}\;to\;1.83^{\circ}$ and from $-1.91^{\circ}\;to\;1.75^{\circ}$, respectively. Moreover, an error for a vector magnitude and a static pressure compared with a dynamic one showed from -7.83% to 4.87% and from -0.73 to 0.77, respectively. Even though this data reduction method showed unsatisfactory errors in a vector magnitude, it resulted in an easy and simple application method. Especially, when it was applied to an actual flow field including a swirling flow, a good result came out on the whole. However, in order to obtain a better result, it is thought that a more sophisticated interpolation method needs to be introduced.
Major influence factors for piercing depth of concrete against small caliber bullet are target's property such as compression strength of concrete and bullet's property such as the velocity and weight of it. In particular about the bullet's property, velocity and incidence angle could be controlled by specific position or distance between targets and shooter, but the angle of yaw of bullet dose not. Because the the angle of yaw of bullet causes lower piercing force of bullet, some errors on piercing depth of concrete could be appeared by live fire test for the evaluation of protective performance. Therefore, we have checked the error canceling effect on the piercing depth of concrete by single shot and barrage of small caiber bullets. As a result, we identified that the error of piercing depth by the angle of yaw of bullet could be cancelled by barrage.
Leading vehicle states are useful and essential elements in adaptive cruise control (ACC) system, collision warning (CW) and collision avoidance (CA) system, and automated highway system (AHS). There are many approaches in ACC using Kalman filter. Mostly only distance to leading vehicle and velocity difference are estimated and used for the above systems. Applications in road vehicle in curved road need to obtain more informations such as yaw angle, steering angle which can be estimated using vision system. Since vision system is not robust to environment change, we used Kalman filter to estimate distance, velocity, yaw angle, and steering angle. Application to active tracking of target vehicle is shown.
The objective of this study was to develop a system for handwriting recognition in three dimensions (3D) to authenticate users. While previous studies have used a stylus pen for two-dimensional input on a tablet, this study uses the Wii Remote controller because it can capture 3D human motion and could therefore be more effective means of recognition. The information obtained from a Wii Remote controller included x and y coordinates, acceleration (x, y, z), angular velocity (pitch, yaw, roll), twelve input buttons, and time. The proposed system calculates distances using six features extracted after preprocessing the data. In an experiment where 15 subjects wrote "AIZU" 10 times, we obtained a 94.8% identification rate using a combination of writing velocity, the peak value of pitch, and the peak value of yaw. This suggests that this system holds promise for handwriting-based authentication in the future.
An Intelligent active roll angle controller design algorithm is discussed. The detailed mathematical formulation and analysis are discussed, and then modeling and design method for active roll angle controller are presented. This paper proposes a design method based upon intelligent robust controller design algorithm to control actively roll angle for improving cornering performance problems. The intelligent robust controller is designed for steady speed driving vehicle system model with representation of steering angle and yaw angular velocity parameters for cornering stability. And the detailed formulation and analysis for the objective vehicle system are investigated.
Free running model tests gives us only maneuvering indices not hydrodynamic derivatives. For this reason, system identification method has been applied to the measured data to identify mathematical model describing hydrodynamic force. However It is difficult to obtain complete set of maneuvering derivatives because of strong correlation of sway velocity and yaw rate. Therefore, in this paper, we assumed that sway velocity related coefficients would be obtained by oblique towing test. and then proposed new procedure to estimate yaw related coefficients. To do this, correlation and regression analyses were carried out to establish modified model and estimate maneuvering derivatives. Also D-optimal rudder input scenario was found based on the modified model and confirmed the validity of its sufficient richness as a input scenario.
Easy measurement method of orthogonal triple-sensor hot-wire anemometer is developed. Advantages of the new method is that it does not require either the exact orthogonality of the installed wires which cannot be kept during the probe manufacture and repair, nor the knowledge of the wire installation angles and the yaw and pitch coefficient of the wires. The new method introduced yaw and pitch calibration coefficients which are designed to increase monotonically with yaw and pitch angles. So the resulting calibration network is simple to recognize compared with that of the previously suggested calibration method. Verification experiments showed good accuracy and independency of the directional calibration on velocity.
To improve the performances of Sawyer motors and to regulate yaw rotation, various feedback control methods have been developed. Almost all of these methods require information on the position, velocity or full state of the motor. Therefore, in this paper, a nonlinear observer is designed to estimate the full state of the four forcers in a Sawyer motor. The proposed method estimates the full state using only positional feedback. Generally, Sawyer motors are operated within a yaw magnitude of several degrees; outside of this range, Sawyer motors step out. Therefore, this observer design assumes that the yaw is within ${\pm}90^\b{o}$. The convergence of the estimation error is proven using the Lyapunov method. The proposed observer guarantees that the estimation error globally exponentially converges to zero for all arbitrary initial conditions. Furthermore, since the proposed observer does not require any transformation, it may result in a reduction in the commutation delay. The simulation results show the performance of the proposed observer.
The vortical flows over sharp-edged delta wings with and without a leading edge extension have been investigated using a computational method. Three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved to provide an understanding of the effects of the angle of attack and the angle of yaw on the development and interaction of vortices and the aerodynamic characteristics of the delta wing at a freestream velocity of 20 m/s. The present computations provide qualitatively reasonable predictions of vortical flow characteristics, compared with past wind tunnel measurements. In the presence of a leading edge extension, a significant change in the suction pressure peak in the chordwise direction is much reduced at a given angle of attack. The leading edge extension can also stabilize the wing vortex on the windward side at angles of yaw, which dominates the vortical flows over yawed delta wings.
The wake structure behind a van type vehicle was studied experimentally with a 5-hole yawhead probe. Through an effective calibration method of the 5-hole yawhead probe, the flow properties such as velocity vector, total pressure and static pressure were obtained on two cross sections within the wake. These results combined with the surface flow visualization performed in the previous study, yielded some information about the wake structure. When the model was placed in a stream with zero yaw angle, two counter rotating vortices were observed behind the model which pull down the surface flow on each side of the model. With increasing the yaw angle, the surface flow on the windward side changed to divide the flow in two directions, one flows upward on the upper part and the other flows downward on the lower part of the windward side. Hence a new weak vortex was created on the upper windward side, which resulted 3 vortices within the wake. The size and the strength of the vortices increased with yaw angle.
