Objective: This study reports the efficacy of using integrative Korean medicine treatments for a patient with facial paralysis and accompanying trigeminal neuralgia. Methods: A 45-year-old male patient with left side facial palsy and facial pain due to Bell's palsy with trigeminal neuralgia was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping for 18 days. The treatment effect was evaluated by measuring the scores for the numerical rating scale (NRS) of facial pain, the House-Brackmann scale, and the Yanagihara scale. Results: After the hospital treatment, the patient's facial pain NRS score was decreased, and the House-Brackmann scale and Yanagihara scale scores improved after the administration of the Korean medicine treatments. Conclusions: The integrative Korean medicine treatments appeared to be effective in treating facial nerve palsy and associated trigeminal neuralgia.

Objective: This study investigates the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for a patient with peripheral facial palsy caused by cerebellar artery infarction. Methods: A 45-year-old male patient with right facial palsy and left side numbness from cerebellar artery infarction was treated with herbal medicine (ligigeopoongsan), acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping therapy for 37 days. The effects were evaluated using the House-Brackmann (H-B) and Yanagihara's unweighted grading systems. Results: Following treatment, the patient's H-B grade decreased and Yanagihara score improved. Conclusion: Korean medical treatment improved peripheral facial palsy in a patient with cerebellar artery infarction.

This study presents a case of facial nerve injury that occurred after parotidectomy for a benign tumor of the parotid gland that improved with integrated Korean medicine (IKM). On June 24, 2023, the patient presented with facial nerve injury based on a facial nerve conduction study after parotidectomy, with a score of five on Yanagihara's unweighted grading system (Y-system) and a grade of five on the House-Brackmann facial grading scale (H-B scale). During the 15 days of admission, IKM treatments, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, herbal steam therapy, physiotherapy, herbal medicine, and thread embedding acupuncture treatment, were performed. After treatment, the strength of the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and masticatory muscles improved, with a Y-system score of 17 and an H-B scale of III. In conclusion, the findings of this study confirm the applicability and effectiveness of IKM in the treatment of facial paralysis following parotidectomy.

Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effect of herbal steam therapy on peripheral facial paralysis. Methods : 55 patients with peripheral facial paralysis were treated with Korean Medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy. We evaluated the effect of Korean Medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy by Yanagihara grading system. Results : 1. 55 patients were treated with Korean Medicine therapy and 23.27±14.11 times of herbal steam therapy. 2. After treatment, Y-system score was significantly increased(p-value＜0.001) from 18.00±6.5514 to 35.00±6.3404. Conclusions : Herbal stream therapy seem to be effective to improve symptoms of peripheral facial paralysis. Further studies will be needed to identify the beneficial of herbal steam therapy on peripheral facial paralysis.

Objective : This study was performed to investigate the effect of Needle-Embedding Therapy on peripheral facial paralysis. Method : We investigated 60 cases of patients with peripheral facial paralysis, and devided patients into two groups : We treated one group by complex korean medical treatment with Needle-Embedding therapy, and did the other group by complex korean medical treatment without Needle-Embedding therapy. Yanagihara grading system at baseline and final were used for evaluating the effect of the treatment. Results : 1. In Needle-Embedding therapy group and non Needle-Embedding therapy group, compared with baseline, at final, Y score was significantly increased.2. At final, there was significant difference in improvement between Needle-Embedding therapy group and non Needle-Embedding therapy group. Conclusions : Needle-Embedding therapy seem to be effective to improve symptoms of peripheral facial paralysis. Further studies will be needed to identify the beneficial of Needle-Embedding therapy on peripheral facial paralysis.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to observe the effect of Pyung-Hyung acupuncture on peripheral facial palsy. Methods : We investigated 44 cases of patients with peripheral facial paralysis, and divided patients into two groups. We treated one group by complex oriental medical treatment with Pyung-Hyung acupuncture, and the other group by complex oriental medical treatment without Pyung-Hyung acupuncture. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment applied for two groups, we used Yanagihara's unweighed grading system(Y system) and gross grading system of House-Brackmann(HB score) at baseline and final. Results : 1. The final Y-system in both the Pyung-Hyung acupuncture group and the control group significantly increased compared to the value at baseline. 2. At final, Pyung-Hyung acupuncture group showed significantly increase on Y-system compared with control group. Conclusions : Pyung-Hyung acupuncture can be used for relieving symptoms related with peripheral facial paralysis.

Objective : This study was performed to investigate the effect of herbal steam therapy on peripheral facial paralysis. Method : 33 patients with peripheral facial paralysis were treated with Korean Medicine therapy including herbal steam therapy. We evaluated the effect of herbal steam therapy by Yanagihara grading system and satisfaction measurement. Results : 1. 33 patients were treated with korean medicine therapy and $27.85{\pm}16.44$ times of herbal steam therapy. 2. After treatment, Y-system score was significantly increased(p-value<0.001) from $18.45{\pm}6.5196$ to $35.42{\pm}5.2501$. 3. 87.88% of patients was satisfied with herbal steam therapy. Conclusions : Herbal stream therapy seem to be effective to improve symptoms of peripheral facial paralysis. Further studies will be needed to identify the beneficial of herbal steam therapy on peripheral facial paralysis.

Peripheral facial nerve palsy is a neurological condition/disease characterized by unilateral paralysis of the facial muscles. We report the effects of complex Korean medicine treatment in 2 patients diagnosed with Bell's palsy who developed symptoms 3-4 days following vaccination with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and who received oral steroids and antiviral medications. Complex Korean medicine treatments including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, bee venom acupuncture, cupping therapy, herbal medicine, and physical therapy were performed. Symptom improvement was evaluated daily using the Numerical Rating Scale, House-Brackmann Grade, and Yanagihara's Score. Patient 1 was hospitalized for 22 days and Patient 2 visited the outpatient clinic 20 times. In both cases, postauricular pain caused by Bell's palsy disappeared, and symptoms of facial paralysis improved following completion of treatment. These findings could suggest that combined Korean medicine treatment may improve symptoms of peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Objectives : Facial nerve palsy is a rare but well-known complication that occurs after a tooth extraction. The paralysis follows the injection of a local anesthetic, but patients typically recover after a few hours. However, there are a number of reports of delayed paralysis, and the cause of delayed facial palsy remains uncertain. This study is the first case report detailing how Korean medicine can be used to treat facial nerve palsy following tooth extraction. This study reports our experience of a patient's favorable recovery. Methods : A 25-year-old male patient experienced acute facial palsy after four premolar teeth were extracted. He was hospitalized in the Pusan National University Korean Medical Hospital. We provided complex Korean traditional medical treatments such as acupuncture, cupping, use of a hot water steamer, and herbal medicine for 18 days. Results : Using the Yanagihara Grading Score, we found improvements in the patient's voluntary facial movement as his score increased from 22 to 34. Furthermore, his accompanying symptoms, such as dry eye and facial pain, disappeared. However, the patient reported transient pain around acupoints after the acupuncture intervention. Conclusion : Our study suggests that Korean medical treatments might be effectively used to treat facial nerve palsy after tooth extraction, although further research should be conducted due to the limited number of cases in this area.

Objectives : This study was to assess the effectiveness of oriental medical therapy (OM) on acute Bell's palsy, comparing its outcome with that of oriental-western medical therapy (OWM). Methods : Subjects were enrolled atKyung Hee Medical Center from March 2007 to December 2007. We prescribed Igigeopung-san and acupuncture therapy to both the OM and OWM groups, and prednisolone only to the OWM group. Effectiveness was assessed by the House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system (HBGS) and Yanagihara's unweighted grading system (YUGS) every week. Results : There were 31 patients in the OM group and 34 in the OWM group. About grading system scores and weekly score gaps, no significant differences were revealed between the two groups, but statistical significant difference was detected at recovery time. After 2 weeks of treatment, the OM group's HBGS score showed significant difference from baseline score, but the OWM group showed it after 1 week. After 3 weeks of medication, pain was reduced in 22% of OM group patients, but 50% in the OWM group (p=0.028). We made the same comparison study for patients treated within 4 days from onset, but there was no significant difference between the two groups. 3 cases of adverse effect of hyperglycemia were found in the OWM group, which could be due to hyperglycemic side-effect of prednisolone. Conclusion : This work could help us to understand the effectiveness of OM compared to OWM on acute Bell's palsy.
