  • The characteristics of Diesel spray droplets, such as the velocity and the diameter were simultaneously measured by using an improved Interferometric Laser Imaging for Droplet Sizing method. The experiments were carried out using an accumulator-type unit injector system and a constant-volume vessel. Two dimensional cross-section photographs of sprays were also taken using a double-pulsed Nd- YAG laser sheet and a linear array CCD camera. As a result, interesting relations between the droplets diameter and the velocity were found.

  • For the next generation railway brake system, a disc brake which can be operated directly and electrically is strongly expected. This paper deals with newly developed disc brake actuator using giant magnetostrictive materials(GMM) which can be integrated with disc brake. Regarding the brake system performance, a better delay time was also attained which can be integrated with disc brake. Regarding the brake system performance, a better delay time was also attained which will contribute to shorten a stopping distance.

  • This paper deals with the difference of the static and kinetic thrust characteristics of a linear pulse motor(LPM) without and with feedback control for a total artificial heart(TAH). In general, the kinetic thrust of LPM without feedback control decreases as increasing the mover velocity. The kinetic thrust characteristics of the LPM with feedback control are improved approximately 30% as compared with the LPM without feedback control in the high velocity range.

  • Voltage and harmonic stability characteristics of capacitor commutated converters applied to a BTB (back to back) system (CCC-BTB) are analyzed and compared to characteristics of a BTB system composed of conventional line commutated converters (LCC-BTB). About 1.6 times larger safe operating regions can be obtained for the CCC-BTB system compared to the latter. The CCC-BTB system results in no harmonic instability problem as it has no shunt reactive compensators in the station and the adjoining AC system generates no low anti-res onance points.

  • Compact and small size, reliable and failsafe operation and low cost featuring fault current limiter causing the designer to take a close look into the use of passive fault current limiter(FCL) for the protection of power semiconductor devices in power electronic systems. This paper has identified the main parameters responsible for the development of ideal passive magnetic current limiter. The effect of those parameters on the range of operation and the voltage-current characteristics of the magnetic current limiter has been studied using tableau approach. Desirable characteristics are discussed and the simulation results are presented.

  • So far a single-axis controlled repulsive type magnetic bearing system have been designed and fabricated in our laboratory employing the repulsive forces operating between the stator and rotor permanent magnet for levitation. The radial axis is uncontrolled passive one. The higher speed of operation is limited due to the vibration along the uncontrolled axis and the increase of control current due to eddy current interference. This paper will discuss a detailed modeling of the repulsive type magnetic bearing system for five axis control including the eddy current effect and the method of reduction of eddy current effect. Simulation results using Matlab will be presented.

  • It is widely recognized that ISO 9000 certification bring some profits, such as enhancement of quality system and some concerns. Since one of the major concerns is cost for certification, this paper considers the cost for ISO 9000 certification in Japanese companies through review some winning reports and case studies. Specifically, a model that describes the certification activities and their cost is derived through reviewing some winning reports in order to give a framework of cost estimation. Based on the model, we estimate the certification cost in an electric division of a company through an interview survey. Furthermore, we focused on the cost for promotion and administration as a cost for the sake only certification, because these activities will not be needed if a company does not implement ISO certification. It is concluded that this cost may vary approximately 300,000-700,000 (US$) per certification by the interview and telephone surveys to Japanese steel companies.

  • We have developed magnetocardiography(MCG) and impedance magnetocardiography(I-MCG) for detecting heart disease by using dc-SQUID technology. The MCG system, using low-Tc SQUID, is being applied commercially for diagnosing heart disease. Using the low-Tc MCG system, many clinical studies on detection of abnormality have been performed. Furthermore, we have developed a portable MCG system using high-Tc SQUID. For detecting changes in kinetic impedance in the heart, an I-MCG system has been demonstrated. The I-MCG system could detect the mechanical movement of the heart. In this report, we review current clinical applications of magnetocardiography and impedance magnetocardiography.

  • Natural habitat fragmentation and reducing habitat quality have resulted in an increased appearance of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata (Gray, 1870), in suburban areas in Japan. To investigate the risk of zoonotic infections, a coprological survey of helminth eggs passed by wild Japanese macaques was carried out in 2009 and 2010 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Microscopic examination found helminth eggs in high prevalence, and nucleotide sequencing of DNA extracted from the eggs identified Oesophagostomum cf. aculeatum and Trichuris trichiura. A fecal culture also detected infective larvae of Strongyloides fuelleborni. These zoonotic nematodes pose a potential health issue to local people in areas frequented by Japanese macaques.
